Werk aan de ziel – Zelfoverwinning

Hoe ijveriger de mens aan zichzelf werkt, des te succesvoller is zijn streven, want dan heeft hij de ernstige wil tot God en dit heeft ook de krachtschenking tot gevolg, die weer een geestelijke vooruitgang garandeert. Het werk aan de ziel vereist een overwinnen van zichzelf en daarom is ze alleen maar te volbrengen, als de mens voortdurend zelfverloochening oefent.

Steeds zal wat voor de ziel bevorderlijk is, voor het lichaam een ontzegging of een offer betekenen en daarom is er een sterke wil nodig, die meer gericht is op de ziel dan op het lichaam. Alleen bij het achterstellen van het lichaam is geestelijk succes te behalen en juist dit valt de mensen zo zwaar, want het lichaam zal altijd met zijn verlangens voordringen, terwijl de ziel zich meestal tevreden moet stellen, als de wil van de mens haar karig bedenkt.

En daarom kan de ziel pas dan in haar ontwikkeling voortschrijden, wanneer er meer aan haar gedacht wordt dan aan het lichaam. Dus de mens kan niet genoeg doen aan de zorg voor de ziel. Hij moet onophoudelijk de liefde oefenen en deze heeft dan ook de wijsheid, de kennis, tot gevolg. En zodra de mens dit beseft, kan hij niet anders dat zich aan de goddelijke wil onderwerpen. Dus dat doen, wat de ziel tot heil strekt.

Aan degene die nu de wil van God probeert te vervullen, zal de goddelijke wil ook geopenbaard worden en dan scheidt hij zich bereidwillig van de materie, van de goederen van de wereld. En bijgevolg slaat hij ook geen acht op wat het lichaam behaagt en is hij er steeds op bedacht om geestelijke goederen te verzamelen, want aardse goederen zullen hem niet aantrekkelijk lijken.

En het is pas de zegen brengende toestand voor de mensheid, als ze geen acht slaat op de wereld en haar goederen en zich op een geestelijk beleven richt. Dan denken, horen en zien de mensen anders. Dat wil zeggen dat ze steeds aan hun zielen denken en dit is pas een geestelijke vooruitgang, die op een zekere zelfverloochening berust. Op een zelfoverwinning. Op een innerlijke strijd tegen dat, wat deel is van de tegenstander. En wie ernstig naar God streeft, die geeft graag en blij op, wat nuttig is voor het lichaam, want hij ruilt het voor iets in, wat waardevoller is: een verhoogde rijpheidsgraad van de ziel.

Soul work.... Overcoming Self....

The more undauntedly a person works on himself, the more successful his endeavour will be, for then he will have the sincere will towards God, and this will also result in the allocation of strength which will ensure spiritual progress again. The soul's work requires overcoming oneself, and therefore it can only be achieved if the human being constantly practices self-denial. What is beneficial to the soul will always mean a renunciation or sacrifice for the body, and therefore a strong will is needed that is more focussed on the soul than on the body. Spiritual success can only be achieved by setting aside the body, and precisely this is so difficult for people because the body will always push forward with its desire, whereas the soul usually has to be content if the human being's will considers it sparingly. And therefore the soul can only progress in its development when it is given more consideration than the body. Thus the human being cannot do enough in caring for his soul, he must constantly practice love, and this will then also result in wisdom.... the realization.... in its wake. And as soon as a person recognizes, he cannot help but submit to the divine will, i.e. do what is beneficial for his soul. The divine will will also be revealed to anyone who only strives to fulfil God's will, and then he will willingly separate himself from matter, from the goods of the world.... and consequently he will not pay attention to what pleases the body either, and he will only ever be intent on collecting spiritual possessions, for earthly goods will no longer seem appealing to him. And that is only the blessed state for humanity, that it leaves the world and its goods unnoticed and turns to spiritual experience. Then people think, hear and see differently, i.e. always remembering their souls, and only this is spiritual progress, which is based on a certain renunciation, on overcoming oneself, on an inner struggle against that which is part of the adversary. And anyone who earnestly strives towards God will gladly and joyfully give up what is of benefit to his body, for he exchanges something more valuable in return.... an increased degree of maturity of the soul....
