Traditional faith.... obedience.... free choice....

A clear judgement of what is truth and what is error will only be possible for a person who has the firm will to stand in the right knowledge. But this will is usually lacking in those whose faith has already been forced into a certain mould, who therefore have no faith of their own but only call a traditionally adopted one their own. A certain obedience has been nurtured in them, which God also credits to them as a virtue, as they believe that they are thereby also living in a way that is pleasing to Him. Nevertheless, man lacks something of importance.... the free decision, i.e. a realization that causes the free will to accept or reject what has traditionally been handed down to him. He has been taught obedience in such a way that he does not even consider taking a mental stand on the teachings he has been given. He feels neither entitled nor capable of scrutinizing and judging.... but accepts without contradiction everything that is conveyed to him by teachers, because he only assumes that they are telling the truth. He completely ignores human errors and inadequacies and recognizes the teachers unquestioningly as authorized and infallible. Nor does he himself use the gifts with which God has endowed him, reason and judgement, which are the prerogative of man over the animal and should therefore be used accordingly. Consequently, he cannot make any spiritual progress either, for this absolutely requires that he himself is intellectually active, i.e. that he uses his intellect and his free will in order to gain knowledge. But he is prevented from doing so, or he allows himself to be hindered by existing doctrines of faith which make the use of intellect or free will unnecessary, thus they are supposed to be accepted without thinking, but this can never result in a living faith. This is a deplorable state of affairs which is an obstacle to higher spiritual development, for such teachings are not suitable for kindling love for God, i.e. for bringing people closer to God. Every thinking person will experience it as spiritual freedom if he can deal with his own thoughts; if he is not forced to live in other people's thinking.... Likewise, he must also have the right to think through for himself what is offered to him as truth and to take a stand on it. For only then is his free will active and the human being makes a decision. Before that, however, it is not possible to speak of his own decision, and this is a shortcoming which greatly impairs the soul's higher development, which is why the bearers of truth and light-giving beings tirelessly fight against it....

전통적인 믿음. 순종. 자유로운 결정.

무엇이 진리이고, 무엇이 오류인지를 명확하게 판단하는 일은 올바른 지식 안에 서려는 확고한 의지를 가진 사람에게만 가능할 것이다. 그러나 믿음이 이미 특정 형태로 강요된, 즉 자신이 스스로 얻은 믿음을 가지고 있지 않고, 단지 전통적인 믿음을 자신의 것으로 여기는, 대부분의 사람들에게 이런 의지가 부족하다. 그들 안에 하나님은 또한 덕성으로 인정해주는, 어떤 순종을 발전시켰다. 그러나 그들은 이를 통해 하나님을 기쁘게 살고 있다고 믿는다.

그럴지라도 사람에게는 어떤 가장 중요한 요소인 자유의지가 부족하다. 다시 말해 자유의지가 전통적으로 전해진 것을 받아들이거나, 거부하게 한다는 깨달음이 부족하다. 그들은 순종하는 양육을 받았기 때문에, 자신에게 제공된 가르침에 대해 생각으로 입장을 취하는 일을 고려조차 하지 않는다. 그는 또한 검토하고 판단할 수 있는 자격도 능력도 없다고 느낀다. 대신에 교사들이 그에게 전달하는 모든 것을 그는 저항이 없이 받아들인다. 왜냐하면 그는 단지 이 모든 것이 단지 진리라는 가정을 하기 때문이다.

그는 인간적인 오류와 부적절함을 완전히 제외시키고, 의심할 여지없이 교사들이 정당하고, 오류가 없는 것으로 깨닫는다. 그는 또한 하나님이 그에게 부여한 은사인, 동물에 대비해 인간의 특권인, 그러므로 합당하게 사용해야 할, 이성과 판단능력을 사용하지 않는다. 결과적으로 그는 어떤 영적 성장을 이룰 수 없다. 왜냐하면 영적 성장을 위해 그가 스스로 생각하는 일이 필요하기 때문이다. 다시 말해 깨달음에 도달하기 위해 자신의 이성과 자유의지를 사용하는 것이 절대적으로 필요하기 때문이다.

그러나 그는 그렇게 하는 일에 방해를 받거나, 기존의 믿음의 가르침이 이성과 자유의지를 사용하는 일을 불필요하게 만든다. 이로써 생각해보지 않고 영접해야 한다. 그러나 이런 일은 절대로 생명력이 있는 믿음을 갖게 할 수 없다. 이런 일은 영적으로 높은 성장을 방해하는 잘못된 일이다. 왜냐하면 그런 가르침은 하나님을 향한 사랑이 타오르게 하는 데, 적합하지 않기 때문이다. 생각하는 모든 사람이 자신의 생각을 스스로 할 수 있게 되면, 그가 이웃사람들의 생각을 따르도록 강요를 받지 않는다면, 그는 이를 영적인 자유로 느끼게 될 것이다.

마찬가지로 그는 자신에게 제공된 것을 진리로 생각하고, 그에 대한 입장을 취할 권리를 가져야만 한다. 왜냐면 그러면 사람의 자유의지가 역사하고, 그가 결정을 하기 때문이다. 그러나 그 전에는 자신의 결정이라고 말할 수 없고, 이런 일은 혼의 높은 성장을 심하게 손상시키는 결점이다. 때문에 진리의 전달자와 빛을 주는 존재가 이에 대항하여 지칠줄 모르고 싸운다.
