World events cause as well as means to remedy the spiritual distress....

Recognizing the plight of a spiritually degenerated humanity, you will also be able to understand world events, which are both the cause and the means to remedy this plight. There is an extraordinary low insofar as no efforts whatsoever are being made by people to prepare themselves for a spiritual life after their earthly demise. And the consequences of this indifference are unforeseeable. It is irresponsible if a person does not endeavour to save his soul. For his carelessness will result in his spiritual abilities remaining undeveloped and thus the human being will live without being able to record the slightest spiritual progress, and his life will not have been lived appropriately. In contrast, the spiritually striving person is offered a natural balance; he lives his life consciously and therefore it will not be without joy either, only these joys are shaped differently than those of the earthly striving person. He finds comfort and edification in the divine word, he only now finds the right purpose in life, and he does not lack anything external because he does not strive for it.... He possesses inner contentment, he is not frightened by earthly hardship, for he desires other than earthly goods. Therefore, world events will not affect him to the extent that they disturb his inner peace; rather, these world events will help to strengthen his faith. But where there is no such attitude, world events are the cause of complete spiritual decline. Man never wants to regocnize the spiritual, he does occasionally get in touch with those who know, but only out of self-interest. He only hopes to gain knowledge that he can utilize well on earth, but never considers his soul. He believes that he can penetrate an area without prior knowledge and a spiritual attitude, but this requires work on himself and activity of love, and this view is erroneous. For whatever experiences he gathers will never allow him to reach his goal. He cannot utilize this good, he lacks the key that first unlocks the spiritual realm for him; he receives something that is not comprehensible to him and is therefore completely unimpressed by it. But he will not be able to use what he has received because spiritual knowledge is only comprehensible if it is striven for from the heart, i.e. if the human being makes himself worthy of receiving it. The hardship on earth should now awaken that drive in man which only strives for the spiritual.... adversity should educate people in such a way that spiritual interest awakens in them and the desire to educate themselves in spiritual knowledge for the sake of truth.... Then this adversity will also be a blessing for people and the spiritual low will be remedied, for this is God's only purpose, that the human being regocnizes his task on earth and fulfils it....

세상에서 일어나는 일의 원인과 영적인 위험을 해결하기 위한 수단.

영적으로 타락한 인류의 위험한 상황을 아는 가운데 너희는 세상에서 일어나는 일을, 그리고 이 일의 원인과 해결할 수단을 이해할 수 있게 될 것이다. 사람들 편에서 이 땅의 죽음 후의 영적인 삶을 준비하는 어떠한 조치도 취하지 않을 정도로 특별하게 저조한 상태를 볼 수 있고, 이런 무관심의 결과를 볼 수 없게 되지 않을 것이다. 사람들이 자신의 혼의 구원을 돌보지 않는 일은 무책임한 일이다. 왜냐하면 그의 게으름은 그의 영적인 능력이 발전되지 못한 상태로 머무는 결과를 가져오기 때문이다. 그러므로 사람이 가장 작은 영적인 성장도 보여줄 수 없는 삶을 사는 결과를 가져온다. 그의 삶은 목적에 합당하지 못하게 산 삶이다.

반면에 영적인 추구를 하는 사람에게 자연적인 보상이 주어진다. 그는 자신의 삶을 의식적으로 산다. 그러므로 기쁨이 없지 않을 것이고, 단지 이런 기쁨은 세상을 추구하는 사람의 기쁨과 다르게 구성이 되어 있다. 그는 하나님의 말씀 안에서 위로와 격려를 받는다. 그는 이제 비로소 올바른 삶의 내용을 찾는다. 그가 외적인 것을 추구하지 않기 때문에, 그는 어떤 외적인 것도 포기할 필요가 없다. 그는 내적인 만족을 갖고, 세상의 위험이 그를 놀라게 하지 않는다. 왜냐하면 그는 세상의 재물과는 다른 것을 갈망하기 때문이다. 그러므로 세상에서 일어나는 일이 그에게 그의 내면의 평안을 방해할 정도가 되지 않을 것이다. 더 나아가 세상에서 일어나는 일이 자신의 믿음을 더 강하게 만드는데 기여할 것이다.

그러나 이런 자세를 가지고 있지 못한 곳에서는 세상에서 일어나는 일이 전적으로 영적인 패망의 원인이 될 것이다. 사람이 절대로 영적인 존재를 인정하기를 원하지 않는다. 사람은 지식을 가진 사람들과 한동안 실제 연결을 이룰 것이다. 그러나 단지 자신의 이익을 위해 이룰 것이다. 그는 단지 세상적인 재물을 얻기 위해 활용할 수 있는 깨달음을 얻기 원하고, 절대로 자신의 혼을 생각하지 않는다. 그는 선행 지식이나 영적인 자세가 없이, 자기 자신에 대한 작업과 사랑을 행하는 것을 선행조건으로 하는 영역에 들어갈 수 있다고 믿는다. 이런 관점은 잘못된 것이다. 왜냐하면 그가 모으는 모든 경험은 그를 절대로 목표에 도달하게 만들지 못할 것이기 때문이다. 그가 영의 영역을 비로소 열어주는 열쇠를 가지고 있지 않아 그는 이 재물을 사용할 수 없을 것이다. 그는 자신이 이해할 수 없는 것을 받고, 이로써 이를 통해 전혀 감동받지 못할 것이다.

그러나 그는 이제 받은 것을 사용할 수 없게 될 것이다. 왜냐하면 영적인 내용을 심장으로 추구할 때, 다시 말해 사람 스스로 받은 것에 자신을 합당하게 만들 때, 단지 이 내용을 이해할 수 있기 때문이다. 이 땅의 위험이 사람 안에 단지 영적인 존재를 추구하는 모든 동력이 깨어나게 해야 한다. 위험이 사람들을 양육하여, 그들 안에 영적인 관심이 깨어나고, 진리 때문에 영적인 지식 안에서 자신을 양육하려는 소원이 활발하게 되야 한다. 그러면 이 위험이 사람들에게 축복이 될 것이고, 영적으로 저조한 상태는 해결이 될 것이다. 왜냐하면 하나님은 단지 사람이 그의 이 땅의 과제를 깨닫고, 이 과제를 성취하는 것을 목표로 하기 때문이다.
