Geestelijke richting zonder waarheid heeft licht noch kracht

Het geestelijke succes is minimaal, als de mensen een verkeerde mening gevormd hebben en niet bereid zijn om deze op te geven. Want dan is er geen streven vanuit een innerlijke drijfveer op te tekenen en een rijp worden van de ziel is uitgesloten. Een geestelijke richting, die niet volledig met de waarheid overeenkomt, kan nooit een opwaartse ontwikkeling, dus een vooruitgang, tot gevolg hebben en de mens zal steeds op dezelfde trede blijven staan. Hij heeft zich een zienswijze eigen gemaakt en hij heeft voldoende aan wat hem verstandsmatig in overweging gegeven is. En hij zou nu de plicht hebben om eveneens verstandsmatig te onderzoeken, hetgeen hij meestal niet doet. Want een onderzoeken en een grondig nadenken zou hem de ongeloofwaardigheid van menige lering laten herkennen.

Maar hij neemt meestal het hem aangebodene als waarheid aan en houdt nu met een hardnekkigheid vast aan dat, wat hij bij een ernstig onderzoek zou verwerpen. En hij heeft toch geen enkele garantie voor de zuivere waarheid. Maar wat de waarheid niet is, kan hem ook geen geestelijk succes opleveren, want alleen de zuivere waarheid geeft tegelijkertijd kracht, zonder welke de mens niet opwaarts kan gaan. En daarom blijft de mens, die niet in het volle bezit van de waarheid is, steeds op dezelfde trede staan.

Een geestelijke richting, die niet volledig met de waarheid overeenkomt, straalt noch licht, noch kracht uit. Dat wil zeggen dat de mens onwetend is, ofschoon hij zich wetend waant. En hij is in geestelijk opzicht ook krachteloos. Het ontbreekt hem zowel aan de kracht om het in te zien, als ook tot geestelijke werkzaamheid. En als de mens zich overeenkomstig zijn geestelijke richting probeert te ontwikkelen, streeft hij altijd alleen maar een aards doel na. Dat wil zeggen dat hij zich alleen maar voor deze wereld ontwikkelt. Voor het aardse leven, maar hij denkt niet aan het leven na de dood en daarom valt een geestelijke vooruitgang niet te noteren.

En vanuit dit standpunt bezien, heeft een geestelijke richting geen waarde, zolang het niet met de waarheid overeenstemt, omdat deze geen effect heeft op de ziel van de mens. Alleen het verstand wordt actief gehouden en enkel de activiteit van de gedachten wordt aangespoord, maar het hart wordt niet beroerd en derhalve is het een dode kennis, als niet met de waarheid overeenkomt, wat de mens nu zijn eigen kennis noemt.

En derhalve levert het aardse leven hem weinig succes op, als hij niet buitengewoon in liefde werkzaam is. Want alleen de werkzaamheid in liefde leidt hem naar de juiste kennis. En zodra de mens in liefde werkzaam is, zal hij ook spoedig een verkeerde geestelijke richting als verkeerd herkennen en daardoor dichter bij de zuivere waarheid komen, omdat de liefde de eerste voorwaarde is om tot kennis te komen en zodoende de ziel de geestelijke rijpheid oplevert. Tegenover een in liefde werkzaam zijnde mens kan de waarheid verdedigd worden, omdat deze hem ook acceptabel lijkt en de mens zich niet verzet, omdat hij deze ook als waarheid herkent. Want waar de liefde is, daar zal ook de kennis zijn.

Spiritual direction without truth neither light nor power....

Spiritual success is minimal if people have formed a wrong view and are not prepared to surrender it. For then there is no striving from the innermost impulse and a maturing of the souls is impossible. A spiritual direction which does not completely correspond to the truth can never result in higher development, thus progress, and the human being will always remain on the same level. He has adopted an opinion and is now content with what has been presented to him intellectually. And he would now have the duty to likewise examine it intellectually, which he usually does not do. For an examination and an intellectual thinking through would make him recognize the flimsiness of some teachings. However, he usually accepts what is offered to him as the truth and then holds on to it with a tenacity that he would reject if he were to seriously scrutinize it. And yet he has no guarantee of pure truth. But what is not truth cannot bring him spiritual success either, for only pure truth simultaneously conveys strength, without which the human being cannot reach the heights. And that is why a person who is not in full possession of the truth always remains on the same level. A spiritual direction which does not fully correspond to the truth radiates neither light nor strength, i.e. the human being is ignorant although he believes himself to be knowledgeable and also powerless in spiritual relationship.... He lacks the strength to recognize as well as to be spiritually active, and if the human being tries to shape himself according to his spiritual direction he only ever pursues an earthly purpose, i.e. he only educates himself for this world, for earthly life, but does not think about life after death and therefore spiritual progress cannot be recorded. And from this point of view, a spiritual direction has no value as long as it does not correspond to the truth because it has no effect on the human being's soul. Only the intellect is kept active and only thought activity is stimulated, but the heart remains untouched, and thus the knowledge the human being now calls his own is dead if it does not correspond to the truth. And thus earthly life will bring him little success if he is not exceptionally active in love. For only loving activity leads him towards the right knowledge.... And as soon as a person is lovingly active he will also soon recognize a wrong spiritual direction as wrong and thereby come closer to the pure truth, because love is the first prerequisite in order to attain realization and thus brings spiritual maturity to the soul. Truth can be advocated to a loving person because it also appears acceptable to him and the person does not resist it because he also recognizes it as truth. For where there is love, there will also be recognition....
