Belief in the immortality of the soul necessary to work on oneself....

People must realize that earthly life is only a means to an end, but never an end in itself. Only this realization spurs them on to strive to reach the goal for the sake of which man walks on earth. Consequently, the belief in the soul's survival after death must be conveyed to him, the immortality of the soul must be explained to him, even though this cannot be proven to the human being. Knowledge must be made accessible to him which makes the doctrine of immortality understandable to him, so that it now becomes easy for him to believe even without proof. Only then does he regard the earth as a means to an end and orientates his whole life towards survival after death. Only this thought allows him to look at earthly goods with different eyes, for he now learns to assess their transience and focusses his attention on the things that last for eternity. And what he now does, he brings into connection with the life beyond. As soon as the human being believes that life has no end with death he thinks about what kind of life after death may be; thus he sends his spirit upwards, i.e. to regions which are the soul's abode after the end of earthly life. And in these regions he is now given information, namely mentally, so that the human being now full of conviction regards himself as a traveller on earth whose course of life will soon be over and he tries to make productive use of this short time on earth. The belief in immortality is therefore inevitably necessary if the human being is to begin the work on his soul, just as this belief also prevents the human being from living a purely worldly life. However, there is no irrefutable proof of the soul's survival. This, too, is a teaching that can never be proven, but which can become the deepest conviction through diligent reflection, just as everything spiritual is not to be proven, so that the free will of man is not restricted and faith is therefore an unconstrained one....

Geloof aan de Onsterfelijkheid van de ziel is nodig om aan zichzelf te werken

De mensen moeten er zich duidelijk van bewust worden, dat het aardse leven alleen middel tot het doel is, maar nooit doel op zichzelf. Pas dit inzicht spoort hen aan om te streven het doel te bereiken terwille waarvan de mens op aarde leeft. Bijgevolg moet hem het geloof aan een voortleven van de ziel na de dood worden overgebracht, de onsterfelijkheid van de ziel moet hem met redenen worden omkleed, ofschoon deze de mens niet kan worden bewezen. Er moet hem een weten worden ontsloten dat hem de onsterfelijkheid begrijpelijk maakt zodat het hem makkelijk valt, ook zonder bewijs te geloven.

Dan pas beschouwt hij de aarde als middel tot het doel en stelt zijn hele leven in op het voortleven na de dood. Pas deze gedachte laat hem dan de aardse goederen met andere ogen bekijken, want hij leert nu de vergankelijkheid ervan te beoordelen en hij richt zijn aandacht op zaken die voor eeuwig blijven bestaan. En wat hij dan doet, brengt hij in verband met het leven hierna.

Zodra de mens er aan gelooft dat het leven niet ophoudt met de dood, denkt hij erover na van welke aard het leven na de dood mag zijn, hij stuurt dus zijn Geest ten hogen, d.w.z. in regionen die woonplaats zijn van de ziel na beëindiging van het leven op aarde. En in deze regionen wordt hem dan uitsluitsel gegeven, en wel d.m.v. gedachten, zodat de mens nu in volle overtuiging zichzelf als een pelgrim op aarde beschouwt, wiens levensloop spoedig beeindigd is en tracht hij deze korte tijd op aarde vruchtbaar te benutten.

Het geloof aan de onsterfelijkheid is bijgevolg onvermijdelijk onontbeerlijk, wil de mens aan de arbeid aan zijn ziel beginnen, zoals echter ook dit geloof de mens verhindert het leven alleen zuiver werelds te leven. Maar een onweerlegbaar bewijs is niet te leveren over het voortleven van de ziel. Dit is ook een leerstuk dat nooit bewezen kan worden, echter door ijverig nadenken tot de diepste overtuiging kan uitgroeien, zoals al het geestelijke niet te bewijzen valt, opdat de vrije wil van de mens niet wordt begrensd en het geloof niet wordt afgedwongen.
