Belief in the immortality of the soul necessary to work on oneself....

People must realize that earthly life is only a means to an end, but never an end in itself. Only this realization spurs them on to strive to reach the goal for the sake of which man walks on earth. Consequently, the belief in the soul's survival after death must be conveyed to him, the immortality of the soul must be explained to him, even though this cannot be proven to the human being. Knowledge must be made accessible to him which makes the doctrine of immortality understandable to him, so that it now becomes easy for him to believe even without proof. Only then does he regard the earth as a means to an end and orientates his whole life towards survival after death. Only this thought allows him to look at earthly goods with different eyes, for he now learns to assess their transience and focusses his attention on the things that last for eternity. And what he now does, he brings into connection with the life beyond. As soon as the human being believes that life has no end with death he thinks about what kind of life after death may be; thus he sends his spirit upwards, i.e. to regions which are the soul's abode after the end of earthly life. And in these regions he is now given information, namely mentally, so that the human being now full of conviction regards himself as a traveller on earth whose course of life will soon be over and he tries to make productive use of this short time on earth. The belief in immortality is therefore inevitably necessary if the human being is to begin the work on his soul, just as this belief also prevents the human being from living a purely worldly life. However, there is no irrefutable proof of the soul's survival. This, too, is a teaching that can never be proven, but which can become the deepest conviction through diligent reflection, just as everything spiritual is not to be proven, so that the free will of man is not restricted and faith is therefore an unconstrained one....

La fede nell’immortalità dell’anima è necessaria per il lavoro su sé stessi

Gli uomini devono avere la chiarezza che la vita terrena è soltanto un mezzo allo scopo, ma mai lo scopo stesso. Soltanto questa conoscenza sprona allo sforzo di raggiungere la meta per cui l’uomo cammina sulla Terra. Di conseguenza gli deve essere trasmessa la fede nella continuazione della vita dell’anima dopo la morte, l’immortalità dell’anima gli deve essere motivata, benché questa non possa essere dimostrata all’uomo. Gli deve essere dischiuso un sapere che gli rende comprensibile l’immortalità, in modo che sarà ora facile per lui di credere anche senza dimostrazione. Soltanto allora considera la Terra come mezzo allo scopo e predispone tutta la sua vita sulla continuazione della vita dopo la morte. Solo questo pensiero lo lascia considerare i beni terreni con altri occhi, perché ora impara a valutare la loro caducità e rivolge la sua attenzione su cose che hanno consistenza per l’Eternità. E quello che ora fa, lo mette in collegamento con la vita nell’aldilà. Appena l’uomo crede che la vita non ha nessuna fine con la morte, riflette su quale genere di vita ci possa essere dopo la morte; cioè invia in Alto il suo spirito, in regioni che sono il soggiorno dell’anima dopo la conclusione della vita terrena. In queste regioni gli viene ora data una chiarificazione e cioè mentalmente, in modo che l’uomo ora considera con piena convinzione sé stesso come un viandante terreno, il cui percorso di vita presto sarà terminato e cerca di sfruttare abbondantemente questo breve tempo terreno. La fede nell’immortalità è perciò inevitabilmente necessaria, se l’uomo deve iniziare il lavoro sulla sua anima, come però questa fede impedisce anche all’uomo di vivere la vita in modo soltanto puramente mondano. Ma non si può portare una dimostrazione irrefutabile sulla continuazione della vita dell’anima. Anche questa è una Dottrina che non può mai essere dimostrata, ma mediante una fervente riflessione può diventare una profondissima convinzione, come tutto lo spirituale non può essere dimostrato, affinché la libera volontà dell’uomo non venga limitata e la fede perciò non sia sottoposta a costrizione.
