De geloofwaardigheid van de overleveringen – De wil tot de waarheid

Het is niet maatgevend wat zich via de mond van een mens voortplant, als de oorsprong niet onweerlegbaar vastgesteld is, dus als een goddelijk geestelijk werkzaam zijn niet bewezen kan worden. Dit is vaak heel moeilijk en daarom moet elke leer ook ernstig onderzocht worden voor wat betreft in hoeverre deze gevoelsmatig geaccepteerd kan worden, want het hart zal de mens, die zich strikt aan de waarheid houdt en daarom ook alleen deze maar aanvaarden wil, juist onderwijzen. Wat deze mens na ernstig onderzoeken nu acceptabel lijkt, kan hij ook als waarheid beschouwen.

Hij moet echter kritisch op zichzelf zijn, of hij werkelijk naar de zuivere waarheid verlangt. De mensen willen vaak alleen niet van oude overleveringen scheiden. Ze leggen zich er geen rekenschap over af of en in hoeverre zo’n overlevering geloofwaardig is. Ze nemen dus zonder te onderzoeken aan, waar ze zich eerst door nadenken een oordeel over zouden moeten vormen. Dit geldt zowel voor geloofsleren alsook voor de levenswandel en het buitengewoon werkzaam zijn van de mensen. Onvoorwaardelijk wordt alles voor waar gehouden, wat daarover verspreid wordt en dit heeft tot gevolg, dat geen enkele tegengestelde mening standhouden zal, omdat elke nadenken daarover tegengegaan wordt.

Maar God eist dit van de mensen, opdat ze het verlangen naar de waarheid in zoverre actief laten worden, als dat ze er zelf naar streven om dwaling van de waarheid te kunnen onderscheiden. Pas dit verlangen vormt ook de bekwaamheid om het juiste te herkennen en het verkeerde af te wijzen. Voor de mens bestaat er geen excuus, als hij er niet toe in staat is, want deze bekwaamheid is alleen maar afhankelijk van het verlangen naar de waarheid.

Maar hoe moet de waarheid hun toegestuurd worden, als ze niet voor een logische verklaring toegankelijk zijn, maar enkel bij hoog en laag geloven, wat hun overgeleverd wordt, zonder dat laatste op zijn waarachtigheid te onderzoeken. Hen kan op de meest overtuigende manier hun verkeerde opvatting weerlegd worden, toch zullen ze daarbij blijven en verdwalen ze steeds dieper in dwaalleren, want het ontbreekt hen aan de wil en tegen hun wil kan hun de waarheid niet toegestuurd worden, of ze herkennen deze niet als zodanig. En daar blijft ook de inspanning van degenen, die zich strikt aan de waarheid houden, zonder succes, want waar de wil zich daartegen kant, kan Gods liefde maar weinig werkzaam zijn.

Credibility of the traditions.... will to the truth....

What is propagated through the human mouth is irrelevant unless its origin can be established beyond doubt, that is, unless it can be proven to be the working of the divine spirit. This is often so difficult and therefore every teaching must also be seriously examined as to how far it can be accepted according to feeling, for the heart will instruct that person correctly who strictly adheres to the truth and therefore only wants to accept such. What appears acceptable to him after serious reflection can also be regarded as truth. However, he must criticize himself as to whether he really desires the pure truth. People often just do not want to part with old traditions, but they do not account to themselves whether and to what extent such a tradition is credible. They therefore accept without examination what they should first form a judgement on through reflection. This applies to doctrines of faith as well as to the way of life and extraordinary work of people.... Everything that has been spread about it is unconditionally considered to be true, and the result is that no opposing view will assert itself since all reflection about it is prevented. But God demands this of people, that they allow the desire for truth to become active insofar as that they themselves endeavour to separate error from truth. Only this desire also develops the ability to recognize what is right and reject what is wrong. Man has no excuse for not being able to do this, for this ability is only dependent on the desire for truth. But how can the truth be conveyed to them if they are not capable of logical reasoning but only firmly and rigidly believe what is handed down to them without scrutinizing the truthfulness of the latter.... Their erroneous opinion can be refuted in the most convincing way, they persist and become ever more deeply entangled in erroneous teachings, for they lack the will and pure truth cannot be conveyed to them against their will or they do not recognize it as such. And there the endeavours of those who strictly adhere to the truth are also unsuccessful, for where the will resists, God's love can only have little effect....
