Earthly fulfilment of duty.... spiritual work....

Nothing should stop you from striving for perfection, and therefore you should not want to achieve earthly aims but only think of your souls and your earthly task, which alone is important since it shall earn you life in eternity. Therefore, if the world approaches you with its demands, then ask God for the strength to enable you to fulfil what is earthly demanded of you, yet know that God likewise makes demands of you and that their fulfilment is far more important, because earthly life was only given to you for the purpose that you strive upwards, that you become perfect and that you must not neglect this task if earthly life is to bring you success for your soul. The human being should never shirk his duties which earthly life imposes on him, for he should use his vitality in helpful neighbourly love; he should be constantly active, for only constant activity contributes towards the redemption of that which is still bound and wants to serve. But if he puts the work for his soul before all earthly work he will not do wrong, on the contrary, he will contribute to the redemption of the bound to a greater extent, and spiritual activity outweighs earthly activity many times over. Anyone who always strives to walk the right path on earth, who only wants to think and act in accordance with God's will, will always place his strength at the service of his neighbour, and what appears to be most important to him he will do first.... If spiritual work seems to him to be unpostponable because he recognizes the hardship on earth, he should give in to his heart's urge and be spiritually active. For the will to work for the kingdom of God also gives him an intensified feeling for what is necessary, and the soul's work should always be placed before all other work, after all, it is the actual purpose of earthly life. But as long as the human being walks along without realization, earthly fulfilment of duty is advisable and in accordance with divine order. But once the meaning and purpose of earthly life has become clear to him, earthly life recedes and spiritual life has priority, because this is imperishable and understandably work for eternity is more important than activity that only brings earthly success. The more mature the human being is, the easier it is for him to separate himself from earth and its goods, the less he demands worldly pleasures, and thus he must also then put worldly demands on hold, i.e. only comply with them as far as is absolutely necessary. Nevertheless, he should practice the activity of love, he should bring love to its highest development and thus let every earthly activity become an activity of love at the same time, so that he now fulfils both.... that he fulfils his duty on earth and yet strives for perfection. And he should use his strength as a labourer for the kingdom of God.... he should set himself an aim by trying to lead erring souls to God, he should help them to realize and thus be spiritually active.... then he will have double success.... he will help himself and his fellow human beings to maturity of soul and use his vitality for redemptive activity....

Irdische Pflichterfüllung.... Geistige Arbeit....

Nichts darf euch vom Streben nach der Vollkommenheit abhalten, und darum dürfet ihr keine irdischen Ziele erreichen wollen, sondern ihr müsset nur an eure Seelen denken und an eure Erdenaufgabe, die allein wichtig ist, da sie euch das Leben in der Ewigkeit eintragen soll. So also an euch die Welt herantritt mit ihren Anforderungen, dann bittet Gott um die Kraft, daß ihr erfüllen könnt, was irdisch von euch gefordert wird, doch wisset, daß Gott gleichfalls Forderungen an euch stellt und daß deren Erfüllung weit wichtiger ist, weil euch nur zu dem Zweck das Erdenleben gegeben wurde, daß ihr strebet zur Höhe, daß ihr vollkommen werdet und daß ihr diese Aufgabe nicht vernachlässigen dürfet, wenn euch das Erdenleben Erfolg eintragen soll für eure Seele. Niemals soll sich der Mensch seinen Pflichten entziehen, die ihm das Erdenleben aufbürdet, denn er soll in dienender Nächstenliebe seine Lebenskraft nützen; er soll unentwegt tätig sein, denn nur ständige Tätigkeit trägt zur Erlösung dessen bei, was noch gebunden ist und dienen will. Doch so er die Arbeit für seine Seele jeder irdischen Arbeit voransetzt, wird er kein Unrecht tun, er wird vielmehr zur Erlösung des Gebundenen in erhöhtem Maß beitragen, und geistige Tätigkeit wiegt die irdische Tätigkeit ums Vielfache auf. Wer immer bestrebt ist, den rechten Weg auf Erden zu wandeln, wer nur dem Willen Gottes gemäß denken und handeln will, der wird seine Kraft stets in den Dienst des Nächsten stellen, und was ihm als Wichtigstes erscheint, das wird er zuerst tun.... So nun die geistige Arbeit ihm unaufschiebbar dünkt, weil er die Not auf Erden erkennt, soll er dem Drängen seines Herzens nachgeben und sich geistig betätigen. Denn der Wille zur Arbeit für das Reich Gottes gibt ihm auch ein verschärftes Empfinden für das, was nötig ist, und die Seelenarbeit soll stets jeder anderen Arbeit vorangestellt werden, ist sie doch der eigentliche Zweck des Erdenlebens. Solange aber der Mensch ohne Erkenntnis dahingeht, ist irdische Pflichterfüllung ratsam und der göttlichen Ordnung gemäß. Ist ihm aber der Sinn und Zweck des Erdenlebens klargeworden, dann tritt das irdische Leben zurück, und das geistige Leben hat das Vorrecht, weil dieses unvergänglich ist und verständlicherweise die Arbeit für die Ewigkeit wichtiger ist als die Tätigkeit, die nur irdische Erfolge einträgt. Je reifer der Mensch ist, desto leichter trennt er sich von der Erde und ihren Gütern, desto weniger fordert er von weltlichen Freuden, und also muß er auch dann die weltlichen Anforderungen zurückstellen, d.h. ihnen nur so weit nachkommen, wie unbedingt erforderlich ist. Dennoch soll er die Liebetätigkeit üben, er soll die Liebe zur höchsten Entfaltung bringen und also jegliche irdische Tätigkeit gleichzeitig zum Liebeswirken werden lassen, auf daß er nun beidem nachkommt.... daß er seine Pflicht erfüllt auf Erden und dennoch strebt nach Vollkommenheit. Und er soll seine Kraft nützen als Arbeiter für das Reich Gottes.... er soll sich ein Ziel setzen, indem er irrende Seelen Gott zuzuführen sucht, er soll ihnen zur Erkenntnis verhelfen und also geistig tätig sein.... dann wird er doppelten Erfolg haben.... er wird sich selbst und seinen Mitmenschen zur Seelenreife verhelfen und seine Lebenskraft nützen zu erlösender Tätigkeit....
