Spiritualization of the substances of the body....

The body should help the soul to spiritual maturity by giving itself up, by suppressing every desire and only allowing the soul's desire to come into its own, which, if the body releases it, completely surrenders to the spirit within itself, thus giving in to its desire and its urge. The more the body joins the soul's desire the more the soul's material external form spiritualizes itself, and then it no longer needs to cover such a long earthly path, whereas a completely materially attuned body still needs a long time after its physical death before it has overcome its desire. The spiritual substances of the outer forms of those souls are, as it were, refined, they are no longer so grossly material, although they are still earthly matter. The soul drags him over into the realm of the spirit to which it has granted all dominion over itself, and the body follows it willingly, it renounces everything that otherwise seemed desirable to it, it is completely without resistance and therefore also no longer turned towards the world. And a person will mature faster if body and soul are subject to the spirit within. The latter now rules them in love and wisdom.... what he demands the soul and the body carries out, and this contributes to spiritual progress. For the soul will be able to hear the voice of the spirit because the body is ready at the same time by keeping every disturbance away from the soul, by putting itself into the state that the voice of the spirit expresses itself. For the body must completely detach itself from the world, it must close its bodily ear and leave the listening to the soul so that it will then convey it to it. The less the soul is hindered by the body, the more audibly the voice of the spirit sounds to it. But the body also has great success. It overcomes matter much more easily, it is, so to speak, strengthened by the food which the soul receives, it spiritualizes itself more and more, and the soul takes spiritual substances of the body into itself when it leaves the world. The earthly material components of the body will not have to go through such a long process of maturing, sometimes they will even be admitted to the formation of a new human soul where they can completely spiritualize themselves. Where soul and body push towards the spirit, such spiritualization is guaranteed if God's eternal order is also paused in the upward development of the spirit. However, the course of ascent development can be considerably shortened when the spiritual's resistance is broken, i.e. when the spiritual itself gives up all resistance, which is always the case, when the body detaches itself from everything it otherwise strives for, when it facilitates the soul's spiritual striving by joining it and seeking to break every earthly fetter through conscious devotion and submission to the spirit within itself, which now draws soul and body to itself, and a rapid ascent development of both is now the result....

De vergeestelijking van de substanties van het lichaam

Het lichaam moet de ziel helpen geestelijk rijp te worden, doordat het zichzelf opgeeft, doordat het elke begeerte onderdrukt en alleen het verlangen van de ziel tot zijn recht laat komen, die zich - als het lichaam haar vrij laat - geheel aan de geest in zich overgeeft, dus zwicht voor diens verlangen en diens aandrang. Hoe meer het lichaam zich bij het verlangen van de ziel aansluit, des te meer vergeestelijkt zich dus ook de materiële buitenkant van de ziel. En deze heeft dan niet meer zo’n lange weg over de aarde af te leggen, terwijl een geheel materieel ingesteld lichaam nog na zijn lichamelijke dood lange tijd nodig heeft voordat het zijn begeren heeft overwonnen. De geestelijke substanties van de uiterlijke vormen van die zielen zijn als het ware verfijnd. Ze zijn niet meer zo grofstoffelijk, ofschoon ze nog aardse materie zijn. De ziel trekt het mee naar de overkant in het gebied van de geest aan wie ze elke heerschappij over zich heeft afgestaan, en het lichaam volgt haar gewillig. Het ziet af van alles wat het anders begerenswaardig toescheen. Het is volledig zonder weerstand en daarom ook niet meer op de wereld gericht.

En een mens zal sneller rijp worden als lichaam en ziel aan de geest in zich onderdanig zijn. Deze zal ze nu in liefde en wijsheid regeren. Wat hij verlangt wordt door de ziel en het lichaam uitgevoerd en dat draagt bij tot geestelijke vooruitgang. Want de ziel zal de stem van de geest kunnen vernemen, omdat het lichaam tegelijkertijd bereid is, doordat het elke storing ver houdt van de ziel terwijl het zichzelf in de toestand verplaatst dat de stem van de geest zich uit. Want het lichaam moet zich volledig losmaken van de wereld. Het moet zijn lichamelijk oor sluiten en het luisteren aan de ziel overlaten opdat deze het hem dan overbrengt. Hoe minder de ziel door het lichaam wordt gehinderd, des te duidelijker klinkt voor haar de stem van de geest.

Maar het lichaam behaalt daardoor ook een goed resultaat. Het overwint veel gemakkelijker de materie. Het is in zekere zin gesterkt door de spijs welke de ziel tot zich neemt. Het vergeestelijkt zich steeds meer en de ziel neemt bij haar heengaan van de wereld geestelijke substanties van het lichaam mede in zich op. De aards materiële bestanddelen van het lichaam zullen niet zo’n lang rijpingsproces hebben door te maken, soms zelfs tot de vorming van een nieuwe mensenziel worden toegelaten, waar ze zich volledig kunnen vergeestelijken.

Waar ziel en lichaam op de geest aansturen, is zo’n vergeestelijking gewaarborgd, als ook Gods eeuwige ordening in acht wordt genomen bij de positieve ontwikkeling van de geest. De gang van de positieve ontwikkeling kan echter aanzienlijk worden verkort, wanneer de weerstand van het geestelijke is gebroken, dat wil zeggen: wanneer het geestelijke zelf elke weerstand opgeeft, wat steeds het geval is wanneer het lichaam zich losmaakt van alles wat het anders nastreeft. Wanneer het voor de ziel het geestelijk streven verlicht, doordat het zelf zich bij haar aansluit en tracht elke aardse boei te verbreken door bewuste overgave en door zich te onderwerpen aan de geest in zich, die ziel en lichaam nu tot zich trekt en een snelle positieve ontwikkeling van beide nu het gevolg is.
