Instincts of preliminary stages determine character....

The current stage of human existence is more or less the same as the state of the spiritual substance within every external form, namely the substance will always have to fight the oppositions which are most powerful within itself, therefore the human being has to fight against evil instincts within himself during his earthly existence. These are exceptionally well developed the more opportunity the spiritual essence has had to indulge itself during a preliminary stage. These instincts of the preliminary stages have left their mark on the spiritual essence, i.e. the human being has to fight particularly resolutely against such instincts.... while the human being who previously had completed his task willingly and consequently is already in a certain state of maturity will enjoy an easier life.

The will to serve liberates the substance correspondingly even while it is still surrounded by a form. And this now submissive substance will live in a form which outwardly also shows the being's willingness. Hence the soul's degree of maturity can be assessed by its external shape. In the embodiment as a human being only those substances of soul unite who share the same nature; but accordingly will also be the fight on earth because many substances of soul united and influence the being in much the same way as in the previous form. The sooner the being can learn to overcome the imperfections the less it will resist and can already become patient, willing and active during the preliminary stages .... However, if it holds on to an instinct within itself it will also have to suffer it as a human being and this determines his character....

Les instincts des stades antérieurs sont déterminants pour le caractère

La phase présente de l'existence humaine est de quelque façon identique à l'état du spirituel dans chaque forme extérieure, c'est-à-dire que la substance animique originelle a toujours à lutter contre des résistances qui sont présentes en elle encore puissamment, de sorte que l'homme doive combattre dans l'existence terrestre contre les instincts mauvais en lui. Maintenant plus la substance animique originelle a pu se débrider dans un stade antérieur, plus elle s’est développée d’une manière particulièrement forte. Ces instincts issus des stades antérieurs impriment maintenant à la substance animique originelle leur timbre, maintenant l'homme doit combattre particulièrement vigoureusement contre de tels instincts, tandis que l’homme qui a exécuté auparavant sa tâche avec bonne volonté et par conséquent se trouve déjà dans un certain état de maturité, bénéficiera d'un chemin de vie plus léger. La volonté de servir rend la substance animique originelle relativement libre, même si elle est encore enfermée dans une enveloppe. Et cette substance animique originelle maintenant sans résistance vivra dans une forme qui porte déjà à l'extérieur la marque de la bonne volonté de l'être. Donc de l’aspect de la forme extérieure on pourra déjà déduire le degré de maturité de l'âme. Dans l'incarnation en tant qu’homme se regrouperont maintenant toujours des substances animiques qui ont la même manière d'être ; par conséquent il y aura maintenant une lutte sur la Terre, parce beaucoup de substances animiques sont réunies et influencent l'être précisément de la même manière que dans la forme précédente. Plus l'être corrige rapidement les manques, moins il oppose de résistance et donc il peut être patient, de bonne volonté et diligent déjà dans les stades antérieurs. Mais s'il conserve en lui un instinct mauvais, alors même comme homme il aura à souffrir de celui-ci, et cela sera déterminant pour son caractère.
