Distance from God.... self-knowledge.... union....

In order to reduce the distance from God the human being has to be aware of his distance from Him and thus experience the separation as oppressive or painful, then he will strive to change the unsatisfactory state and thus consciously work on himself in the realization that his own state of maturity has to be raised in order to reduce the distance from God. Self-knowledge is therefore the first condition for conscious soul work, but this is least likely to be found in people, for they do not consider themselves flawed and therefore do nothing to improve their spiritual state. It is extremely difficult to shake the feeling of excellence in people, and yet this is just as necessary, for only a person who regocnizes his own shortcomings will do anything to remedy them. And again, the will for truth is absolutely necessary, for the truth-loving person gives account to himself of his thoughts and actions, and he exercises criticism, thus it is understandable that the person whose heart strives for truth is close to the right path, for his train of thought is guided such that he regocnizes himself and consequently also strives for a change in his nature. And thus, when he regocnizes his shortcomings, he becomes small and humble, he wants to rectify them and appeals to God for strength, and thus he is already approaching the eternal deity, for he wants to go to God.... He regocnizes his unworthy state and wants to escape it.... He feels that he is incapable of doing so on his own and thus requests divine grace, and now the distance from God becomes ever smaller, for when the human being receives the strength from God, which he requires for his spiritual well-being, God's love also takes hold of him and makes his heart capable of love.... And love in turn brings him ever closer to God, love finally cancels out the distance from God completely, love establishes union.... The course on earth has now finally brought about that man has given up his will striving against God and has rejoined his father from eternity of his own will, thus is redeemed from endless long bondage....

Verwijdering van God – Zelfkennis – Vereniging

Om de verwijdering van God te verminderen, moet de mens zich bewust zijn van de afstand tot Hem en de scheiding dus als bedrukkend of smartelijk ervaren. Dan zal hij een verandering van de voor hem niet bevredigende toestand nastreven en nu dus bewust aan zichzelf werken in het besef, dat zijn eigen rijpheidstoestand verhoogd moet worden om de afstand tot God te verminderen.

Zelfkennis is dus de eerste voorwaarde voor een bewuste arbeid aan de ziel. Maar juist deze zelfkennis is het minst bij de mensen te vinden, want ze houden zich niet voor iemand met gebreken en daarom doen ze ook niets voor de verheffing van hun geestelijke toestand. Het is buitengewoon moeilijk om het gevoel van voortreffelijkheid in de mens te verstoren en toch is juist dit nodig, want pas de mens, die zijn gebreken herkent, helpt zichzelf om deze gebreken uit de weg te ruimen.

En weer is de wil om de waarheid te kennen absoluut nodig, want de mens, die de waarheid liefheeft, geeft zichzelf rekenschap over zijn denken en handelen en hij is kritisch. Daarom is het begrijpelijk, dat de mens, wiens hart de waarheid nastreeft, dicht bij de juiste weg is, want zijn gedachtegang wordt zo geleid, dat hij zichzelf herkent en bijgevolg ook een verandering van zijn wezen nastreeft. En als hij dus zijn gebreken inziet, wordt hij klein en deemoedig. Hij zou deze gebreken graag opheffen en wendt zich vragend tot God om kracht en zo nadert hij de eeuwige Godheid al, want hij wil naar God. Hij beseft zijn onwaardige toestand en zou hem graag ontvluchten.

Hij voelt dat hij er niet alleen toe in staat is en vraagt om de goddelijke genade. En nu wordt de afstand tot God steeds minder, want als de mens de kracht uit God toegestuurd wordt, die hij voor zijn geestelijk welzijn vraagt, grijpt de liefde van God hem ook en maakt zijn hart bekwaam om lief te hebben. En de liefde brengt hem weer steeds dichter bij God. De liefde heft de afstand tot God tenslotte helemaal op. De liefde brengt de vereniging tot stand. De gang over de aarde heeft nu voorgoed tot stand gebracht, dat de mens zijn God tegenstrevende wil opgegeven heeft en zich weer uit eigen wil met zijn Vader van eeuwigheid af verbonden heeft, dus verlost is van een eindeloos lange gebondenheid.
