Different living conditions no obstacle to the development of the soul....

People's ways of life are so diverse and yet can lead to the same result, and thus it is erroneous to assume that the soul's life can only develop in certain circumstances, whereas it must remain completely uninfluenced where the human being's situation in life is less beneficial to the soul. This view is extremely erroneous, after all, all people must have the same opportunity to reach the state of perfection, and the eternal deity can never want to favour or degrade a being, for this would never be compatible with divine love and justice. People's living conditions may seem to be favourable or unfavourable, and this gives rise to wrong conclusions, but the individual person's lot is always assigned to him in such a way that it can contribute to his higher development to the highest degree, if only he makes extensive use of it himself, and this alone is decisive. The human being is certainly often forced by extraordinary circumstances to move in a certain direction of thought, i.e. he will have to solve tasks in the worldly sphere which fill him mentally, so that he will occupy himself little or not at all with spiritual problems, yet no human being on earth is exclusively only earthly active.... There is still time for one to deal with oneself and give heed to spiritual questions, if only the will is there. And the job, the situation in life, time or place of his earthly existence is never in any way a hinderance to shaping his inner life according to divine will.... The human being's will is always the sole factor to be taken into account.... The will overcomes all external circumstances that threaten to hinder the soul's life. And again, it is the desire for the world which can be considered the greatest obstacle to the soul's higher development.... And this desire can be nourished in seemingly good as well as in bad life situations, but it can also be fought. All resistances exist in order to be overcome, and it is therefore irrelevant whether the human being has to fight a hard battle in life due to poor circumstances and in return has fewer worldly temptations or whether he has to fight out even harder battle against the world in a life of well-being.... the inner life is always and in every situation completely separate from the life of the body. Thoughts are conveyed to the human being in so many ways by the spiritual beings who look after him that it is only a matter of grasping and utilizing them. And this is never dependent on the human being's situation in life and his destiny.... because according to the wise plan of the creator, this is assigned to every human being in such a way that it guarantees the highest possible perfection and thus earthly life need only be used correctly, i.e. according to divine will, in order to lead to complete success. Thus the objection that a profession or fate makes it easier to find the way to realization is totally wrong.... Only the will alone is decisive that the human being pays attention to his inner life and is therefore active of his own accord for the salvation of his soul....

Verschillende levensomstandigheden zijn geen belemmering voor de ontwikkeling van de ziel

De levenswegen der mensen zijn zo verschillend van aard en kunnen toch tot hetzelfde resultaat leiden. En zo is het onjuist om aan te nemen dat het zielenleven zich alleen in bepaalde omstandigheden kan ontwikkelen, terwijl het totaal niet beïnvloed moet blijven waar de levenssituatie van de mens minder bevorderlijk voor de ziel zou zijn. Deze mening is uitermate onjuist. Alle mensen moeten toch dezelfde mogelijkheid hebben de toestand van volmaaktheid te bereiken en er kan door de eeuwige Godheid nooit een bevoorrechting of achterstelling van een wezen gewild zijn, want dit zou nooit verenigbaar zijn met de goddelijke liefde en gerechtigheid. Wel zijn de levensomstandigheden van de mensen schijnbaar gunstig of ongunstig en dit geeft aanleiding tot verkeerde gevolgtrekkingen. Het lot van de afzonderlijke mens echter is hem steeds zó toegewezen als het tot de positieve ontwikkeling in hoogste mate kan bijdragen, als het maar door hem zelf uitvoerig benut wordt. En dit alleen is doorslaggevend.

De mens is wel vaak door buitengewone omstandigheden gedwongen in een bepaalde richting te denken, dat wil zeggen: hij zal op werelds gebied problemen moeten oplossen die zijn gedachten in beslag nemen, zodat hij zich nauwelijks of helemaal niet met geestelijke problemen bezighoudt, maar toch is geen mens op aarde alleen maar aards bezig. Een ieder blijft steeds nog tijd om zich met zichzelf bezig te houden en aandacht te schenken aan geestelijke vragen, wanneer daartoe de wil maar aanwezig is. En ook nooit is het beroep, de levenssituatie, tijd en plaats van zijn aards bestaan op de een of andere manier hinderlijk bij het vormgeven van zijn innerlijk leven naar goddelijke wil. Steeds is de wil van de mens de enige factor waar rekening mee moet worden gehouden. De wil overwint alle uiterlijke levenssituaties die hinderlijk dreigen te worden voor het zielenleven. En weer is het verlangen naar de wereld datgene wat als grootste hindernis kan gelden voor de positieve ontwikkeling van de ziel. En dit verlangen kan zowel in een schijnbaar goede als in een slechte levenssituatie worden gevoed - maar ook bestreden. Alle weerstanden zijn er nu eenmaal om overwonnen te worden. En bijgevolg is het van geen belang of de mens door armoedige omstandigheden een zware levensstrijd en daarom minder wereldse verzoekingen heeft te doorstaan, of dat hij in welvaart de des te zwaardere strijd tegen de wereld moet uitvechten. Steeds en in elke levenssituatie is het innerlijk leven volledig gescheiden van het leven van het lichaam.

De gedachten worden de mens zeer veelzijdig overgebracht door de hem verzorgende geestelijke wezens, zodat het alleen op het aangrijpen en benutten ervan aankomt. En dat is nooit afhankelijk van de levenssituatie van de mens en het voor hem bestemde lot. Want dit is volgens wijs plan van de Schepper aan ieder mens zo toegewezen dat het de grootst mogelijke voltooiing garandeert. En dus hoeft het aardse bestaan alleen maar juist - dat wil zeggen volgens goddelijke wil - gebruikt te worden om tot een volledig succes te leiden. Dus de tegenwerping, dat een beroep of een lot gemakkelijker de weg naar het inzicht zal laten vinden, is geheel ongegrond. Altijd is alleen maar de wil maatgevend, dat de mens zijn innerlijk leven aandacht schenkt en dus uit eigen aandrang werkzaam is voor het heil van zijn ziel.
