Spirit bearer.... purpose of all created things.... growth of plants....
Everything created has the primary purpose of serving as a spirit carrier but at the same time also contributes to the preservation of the whole, for one is, as it were, created for the other and necessary for the existence of the latter. No thing in creation was created completely without purpose, rather, it will always mean a complement in such a way that either one draws the vitality from the other or the work of creation corresponds to other needs but has some purpose for the benefit or preservation of the various creatures. It is only to be observed that all spiritual, which enlivens this creation, is not touched by the outer purpose of the form enveloping it, that therefore all spiritual is active in itself completely irrespective of earthly activity, while the outer form always contributes to the perfection of another form and therefore remains equally active in the earthly sense. What is taken from the earth for the growth of the plant is, so to speak, always the outer cover of some soul substance, which is now taken up into the plant world, where it brings about a new form for the same purpose, while the spiritual substance always takes up residence again in the new form, increases through the soul substance taken from the previous form and thus shapes itself into ever greater beings, which likewise have their purposeful destiny in the whole of creation....

Drager van geest – Doel van al het geschapene – Groei van de planten
Al het geschapene heeft in de eerste plaats het doel om als drager van geest te dienen, maar om gelijktijdig ook aan de instandhouding van het geheel bij te dragen, want het één is in zekere zin voor het andere geschapen en voor het bestaan hiervan noodzakelijk. Geen ding in de schepping werd volledig doelloos geschapen. Veeleer zal het steeds op die manier een aanvulling betekenen, dat of het ene de levenskracht uit het andere trekt, of het scheppingswerk andere behoeften vervult. Maar wel één of andere bestemming heeft tot nut voor of tot instandhouding van de verschillende schepselen.
Er is alleen maar waar te nemen, dat al het geestelijke, dat deze schepping leven geeft, niet door de uiterlijke bestemming van de omhullende vorm aangeroerd wordt. Dat dus, ondanks de aardse bedrijvigheid, al het geestelijke in zich werkzaam is, terwijl de uiterlijke vorm steeds bijdraagt aan de vervolmaking van een andere vorm en dus evenzo in aardse betekenis voortdurend werkzaam blijft.
Wat voor de groei van planten aan de aarde onttrokken wordt, is, om zo te zeggen, steeds het uiterlijke omhulsel van één of andere zielensubstantie, die nu opgenomen wordt door de plantenwereld en daar met hetzelfde doel een nieuwe vorm tot stand brengt. Terwijl de geestelijke substantie steeds weer verblijf neemt in de nieuwe vorm, vermeerdert zich de van de vorige vorm ontleende zielensubstantie en vormt zich dus tot steeds grotere wezens, die in de hele schepping eveneens hun doelmatige bestemming hebben.
