Be careful of everything that can arouse the pride-devil in you. The demons persecute all those to whom the commandment of charity gives cause for activity in love.... they always try to counteract there by slightly trying to disfigure the motive.... that man in his action deviates from the actual task of helping, which is to be regarded as the principle for charity. A small part of self-conceit has the danger that from such an action is no longer pleasing to God, but that the influence of evil forces is visibly felt.... Wherever self-conceit is only a driving force in the least degree, the good work has little or no value. Therefore beware of pride above all, lest you suffer harm to your soul....

Waarschuwing voor hoogmoed en eigendunk
Sla acht op alles wat in jullie de hoogmoedsduivel kan opwekken. De demonen vervolgen al degenen voor wie het gebod van de naastenliefde de aanzet is voor het in liefde werkzaam zijn. Ze proberen dit steeds tegen te werken door het motief lichtelijk te misvormen, zodat de mens in zijn handelen afwijkt van de eigenlijke opgave om te helpen, wat toch als principe voor de naastenliefde moet gelden.
Een klein beetje eigendunk draagt het gevaar in zich dat een handeling die hierop gebaseerd is, niet meer welgevallig is voor God, maar dat de invloed van kwade machten daarbij zichtbaar te merken is. Overal waar de eigendunk ook maar enigszins de drijfveer is, heeft het goede werk geen of slechts zeer weinig waarde. Hoed je daarom voor alle hoogmoed, opdat je ziel geen schade lijdt.
