Dienen – Zonde door de ledigheid

De gang door het aardse leven is een bewust en onbewust dienen, maar steeds een activiteit, als deze gang draaglijk moet zijn. Als voor het wezenlijke het dienen niet mogelijk is, dan is dit de toestand van de dood, weliswaar door de eigen wil tevoorschijn geroepen, maar onuitsprekelijk kwellend. Maar in het stadium als mens staat het het wezenlijke vrij om dienend bezig of passief te zijn. En het heeft niet zo’n kwellend effect als in het voorstadium, maar het is des te belangrijker, omdat de traagheid de ziel enorm belast. De ziel ervaart de passiviteit als een hindernis op de weg omhoog. Ze voelt het, maar is meer naar het lichaam toegekeerd en vervult diens verlangens.

En zoals ze op aarde haar taak verwaarloost, zo zal ze ook in het hiernamaals niet de eisen vervullen, die aan haar gesteld worden om haar kwellende toestand te veranderen, die het gevolg is van haar aardse leven en wat hiervan het effect is. Ze wil haar passieve toestand in het hiernamaals niet als oorzaak van haar lijden erkennen en is daardoor ook niet genegen, deze te ontvluchten en toch voelt ze de kwellingen van haar onvrijheid. Bovendien zal ze, net als op aarde, heftig naar afleiding en vervulling van aardse wensen verlangen, maar nooit bereid zijn om in dienende liefde degenen te helpen, die net als zij lijden.

Deze toestand is buitengewoon hopeloos, als de ziel geen innerlijke drijfveer heeft om actief te zijn, wat een gevolg van haar passieve levenswijze is. Op aarde stroomt de mens onophoudelijk kracht toe en deze kracht moet gebruikt worden. Ze moet gebruikt worden om dienend werkzaam te zijn, want alleen maar hierdoor verlost de ziel zichzelf en helpt zij ook het nog onrijpe geestelijke in de materie bij de opwaartse ontwikkeling.

Maar zodra de mens zich aan ledigheid overgeeft, misbruikt hij de hem toegestuurde kracht, zonder daarbij nuttig te zijn voor zijn ziel. Dit zou alleen maar een stilstand zijn, als de ledigheid niet tegelijkertijd het gevaar in zich zou hebben, dat de mens aan de zonde vervalt, wat een achteruitgang voor hem zou betekenen. Want nu komt de tegenstander van God in actie, doordat hij de trage mens alle geneugten van het aardse leven voorhoudt en hem aanspoort om deze na te jagen. Genotzucht, zwelgerij en vleselijke begeerten verleiden hem tot vele zonden, verzwakken het lichaam en de ziel en maken deze ongeschikt om weerstand te bieden.

Het verlangen naar aardse goederen wordt groter en de ziel wordt nu heel ver weggehouden van haar eigenlijke aardse taak, als ze niet aan het aandringen van de geest toegeeft, die de ziel vermaant om deze levenswijze op te geven. Als de ziel nog deze wilskracht opbrengt, dan is ze gered. Maar er is grote wilskracht nodig en een vurig gebed tot God om hulp en een sterken van de wil.

Maar meestal gaat het verlangen naar de wereld hand in hand met ledigheid en wordt er geen aandacht geschonken aan de geestelijk opdracht van de mens. En de ziel moet in het hiernamaals bitter boeten voor zo’n verkeerde levenswandel, want de kwellingen van de passieve toestand blijven haar niet bespaard. Ze moet deze geduldig verdragen, tot ze er vanuit zichzelf naar verlangt actief te zijn, wat ondenkbaar lange tijd kan duren.

Serving.... vice of idleness....

The walk through earthly life is a conscious and unconscious serving, but always activity if this walk is to be a bearable one. If it is not possible for the beingness to serve, then this is a state of death, indeed caused by its own will, but unspeakably agonizing. In the stage as a human being, however, the beingness is free to be of service or to be inactive. And this does not have as agonizing an effect as in the previous stages, but it is all the more serious because the inertia places a tremendous burden on the soul. The soul perceives inactivity as an obstacle to ascent. It feels it, but is more turned towards the body and fulfils its desires. And just as it neglects its task on earth, it will also not fulfil the demands made of it in the beyond in order to change its agonizing state, which is the result and effect of its earthly life. It will not recognize its state of inactivity in the beyond as the cause of its suffering and therefore will not be willing to escape it either, yet it will still feel the torment of its lack of freedom. Moreover, as on earth, it will crave distractions and the fulfilment of earthly desires, but will never be prepared to help those who suffer like it in servant love. This state is extremely hopeless if the soul has no inner drive to be active, which is a consequence of its idle way of life. On earth power is constantly flowing to people and this should be utilized, it should be utilized for serving activity, for only through such activity does the soul redeem itself and also help the still immature spiritual substance in matter to develop higher. However, as soon as the human being indulges in idleness, he misuses the strength he receives without gaining any benefit for his soul. This would only be a standstill if idleness were not at the same time the danger that man falls into vices which mean a regression for him. For now the adversary of God comes into action by holding up all the comforts of earthly life to the sluggish human being and urging him to chase after them. Indulgence, gluttony and carnal desires tempt him to commit many sins, weaken the body and soul and make them unfit for resistance. The desire for earthly goods is increased and the soul is now kept completely away from its actual earthly task if it does not give in to the urging of the spirit, which makes suggestions to the soul to give up this way of life. If the soul still has this strength of will, then it is saved, but this requires great willpower and heartfelt prayer to God for help and strengthening of the will. In most cases, however, the desire for the world goes hand in hand with idleness and the person pays no attention to the spiritual task. And the soul must bitterly atone for such a wrongly led way of life in the beyond, for it will not be spared the torments of the state of inactivity. It has to endure it until it longs for activity of its own accord, which can take an inconceivably long time....
