La voie large - Tentations – la voie étroite vers le Haut

La voie que la plupart des hommes parcourt est large et plane et elle les conduit à des jardins merveilleux, à travers lesquels ils passent en se réjouissant, cette voie offre de constantes diversions et attirera toujours les hommes pour qu’ils y restent et goûtent jusqu'au bout ce qui semble fascinant au pèlerin. Et il ne devra jamais marcher solitaire, il y aura toujours d’autres hommes qui l'accompagnent, qui parcourent la même voie avec les mêmes joies et les mêmes espoirs que lui, parce que tous cherchent seulement des joies et des jouissances mondaines, parce que tous succombent aux mêmes séductions et donc l'un a compréhension pour l’action de l'autre. C’est la voie large qui est parcourue par d'innombrables hommes, et seulement peu l’évitent pour parcourir les sentiers étroits qui mènent en haut. Ceux-ci savent que la voie étroite mène à un autre but et dans la connaissance de ce but ils évitent donc la voie large, laquelle, non reconnue des hommes, mène vers le bas et donc elle ne peut pas être la voie vers le Haut. Et depuis la large partent toujours de nouveau d’étroites voies secondaires et sur ces voies il y aura toujours des messagers et ils s'offrent comme guide à ceux qui veulent abandonner la large et tendent avec une volonté sérieuse vers le Haut. Seulement peu suivront la voie qui leur est offerte, seulement peu pourront se séparer de la voie large, de ses passe-temps et de ses joies. Seulement peu s‘occuperont de ceux qui s’offrent à eux comme guide. Parce que là où une voie étroite dévie vers le Haut, là la voie large offre toujours des passe-temps particuliers, là frétillent tant de lumières éblouissantes, que la voie étroite n'est pas vue et tous tendent seulement vers ces lumières qui les guident toujours davantage dans l'erreur. Cette voie large a été disposée par le seigneur du monde qui pourvoit toujours pour qu'elle ne devienne pas insipide et ennuyeuse pour ceux qui y passent, et il emploie tous les moyens de séduction particulièrement là où les voies étroites se détachent vers le Haut. Alors l'œil reste attaché et l'homme ne voit pas très facilement la voie secondaire et tombe victime de ces moyens de séduction. Mais il y a aussi des hommes qui se détournent de toutes ces tentations du monde, parce qu'ils reconnaissent leur inutilité et parce qu’ils suivent un autre but, celui d’atteindre Dieu, qui ne peut jamais Etre atteint sur la voie large. Et ceux-ci cherchent des déviations de la voie large et ils se confient volontiers à ceux qui veulent les guider vers le Haut. Et ils s’efforcent aussi d'attirer les hommes sur le sentier étroit, de tenir devant eux le juste but et de les pousser à marcher avec eux sur la voie vers le Haut. Et tous atteindront leur but. Certes, du point de vue terrestre ils renoncent à quelque chose, mais ils reçoivent quelque chose de beaucoup plus précieux, ils prennent possession du Règne qui offre des choses beaucoup plus merveilleuses, cependant il peut être atteint seulement à travers un constant dépassement, mais pas à travers des joies terrestres, à travers la jouissance mondaine.

Wide Street.... temptations.... narrow way to the height....

The road along which most people walk is wide and level, and it leads through beautiful gardens which are walked through with pleasure, it constantly offers variety and will always entice people to linger and savour what seems appealing to the walker.... And he will never need to walk along alone, there will always be people in his company who walk the same path with the same joys and the same hopes as him, because they all only seek worldly pleasures and enjoyments, because they all succumb to the same temptations and therefore one always has understanding for the other's goings-on.... It is the broad road that is trodden by countless people, which only a few avoid in order to walk narrow paths that lead upwards.... These know that the narrow path leads towards another aim, and in the knowledge of this aim they therefore avoid the broad road, which.... unnoticed by people.... and therefore cannot be the right path to the heights. Again and again narrow side roads branch off from the broad road, and messengers will always stand along these roads and offer to guide those who want to leave the broad road and earnestly strive upwards. Only a few will follow their offer, only a few will be able to separate themselves from the broad road of pleasure and lust.... Only a few will respect those who offer themselves to them for guidance.... For wherever a narrow path branches off to the heights, there the broad road offers special pleasures.... there flash so many dazzling lights that the narrow path is overlooked and all strive only towards these lights which lead them ever more astray. This wide road is laid out by the lord of the world, who always sees to it that it does not become dull and boring for its passers-by, and who especially uses all the arts of seduction where the narrow paths branch off upwards. Then the eye remains spellbound, and the person very easily overlooks the side path and falls victim to those arts of seduction. But there are also people who turn away from all these temptations of the world because they recognize their unworthiness and because they pursue a different aim.... to reach God, Who can never be reached by the broad way. And these seek diversions from the broad road, and they gladly and willingly entrust themselves to those who want to lead them upwards. And they also endeavour to entice other people onto the narrow path and hold the right aim up to them and induce them to join them on the path to ascent.... And they will all reach their aim.... They may give up many earthly things, but they receive far more valuable things.... they take possession of the kingdom which offers far more glorious things, but which can only be reached through constant overcoming, but not through earthly pleasures, through worldly enjoyment....
