The narrow and the wide way....

Choose the path that leads you towards your eternal home. It is admittedly narrow and arduous and you will have to muster all your strength in order not to slip onto the wide path, which certainly offers pleasures and comforts but leads you towards a different goal. And even if the path is narrow and full of hardship, a companion is always at your side Who gives you strength, supports you and guides you safely through all the dangers of life if only you call upon Him and desire His help. The wide, practicable path constantly offers comforts and relief of all kinds, and therefore it is travelled by those who want to avoid hardship and plagues and make their earthly life pleasant. But this path will never lead to the heights. The man who walks on the broad path will always and constantly cling to the earth and be in the greatest danger of ending up in the depths. The pleasures of life will occupy his whole mind, his thoughts and feelings will become shallow and he will find favour in the most earthly worthless trinkets, he will indulge in the desires of the body and be devoted to vices with all his senses. And such a way of life can never lead upwards, but must end in ruin. All the strength that God gives to man to preserve his life is wasted on completely useless endeavours, the soul envelops itself in an ever denser shell instead of dissolving it and freeing itself from the chains that bind it to earth. And this can only mean decline for the human soul but not lead to higher development, whereas the narrow path certainly leads upwards, albeit over thorns or seemingly insurmountable undergrowth. For at the end of the path the soul regocnizes the one Who is its fulfilment.... He sends His light towards it so that it does not walk in darkness but regocnizes all dangers and knows how to avoid them. He gives her strength and fortification through His figure of light, He stretches out His hands to the struggling one and supports him when he threatens to sink down. But at the end of the path the soul awaits the well-deserved rest, and this is unimaginably marvellous, that no effort and adversity of the path was too great compared to that glory, while the wanderer has already enjoyed his joys and recreations on the broad earthly path and comes away empty-handed when he has reached the goal. For he has striven for a different goal, he has never thought of the end of the path but has snatched all comforts from earthly life and now has to live in extreme hardship, for the renunciations, which are now his lot, affect him far more painfully as he greedily remembers his earthly life and can no longer fulfil his vices and desires. For he has not utilized earthly life for the good of his soul, he has not been able to overcome himself to make small sacrifices but has enjoyed it to the full. And the fulfilment of earthly life means agonizing renunciations in the afterlife, which cannot be ended arbitrarily....

좁은 길과 넓은 길.

비록 너희를 영원한 고향으로 인도하는 길이 좁고, 고생스러울지라도 이 길을 선택하라. 실제로 기쁨과 안락함을 제공하지만, 그러나 다른 목표지점으로 인도하는 넓은 길로 빠지지 않기 위해, 너희는 너희 모든 힘을 사용해야만 한다. 좁은 길은 고난이 많은 길이지만, 그러나 너희에게 능력을 주고, 너희를 지원하고, 모든 인생의 위험 가운데 너희를 안전하게 인도하고, 너희가 단지 부르면서 그의 도움을 갈망하기만 하면 되는 동행자가 너희에 곁에 항상 있다.

가기 쉬운 넓은 길은 끓임없이 모든 종류의 편안함과 만족스러운 것을 제공할 것이다. 이 때문에 고난과 어려움을 피하려는, 이 땅의 삶을 편안하게 만들려는 사람들이 이 길을 갈 것이다. 그러나 이 길은 절대로 높은 곳으로 인도하지 못할 것이다. 넓은 길을 가는 사람들은 항상 지속적으로 이 땅에 매일 것이고, 저 아래에서 삶을 마칠 큰 위험 가운데 있다. 이 땅의 삶의 기쁨이 그의 모든 생각을 차지하고, 그의 생각과 느낌은 단순하게 되고, 그는 가장 무가치한 세상의 쓸모 없는 것들을 좋아한다. 그는 육신의 정욕에 몰두하고, 모든 감각적인 죄악에 빠진다. 이러한 삶의 방식은 절대로 높은 곳으로 인도할 수 없고, 멸망으로 끝나야만 한다.

하나님이 사람에게 자신의 생명을 유지하도록 준 모든 힘을 전적으로 무익한 일에 소모할 것이고, 혼의 겉형체를 해체시켜 이 땅의 묶임으로부터 자신을 자유롭게 만드는 대신에 항상 굳은 겉형체로 혼을 감쌀 것이다. 이는 단지 사람의 혼에게 퇴보를 의미하고, 높은 곳으로 성장하도록 인도하지 않는다. 반면에 좁은 길은, 비록 가시 또는 극복할 수 없게 보이는 숲을 통과할지라도, 확실하게 높은 곳으로 인도한다. 이 길의 마지막에 가서 혼은 자신이 이룬 성취의 대상인 분을 깨닫는다.

그 분이 혼에게 자신의 빛을 전해주고, 혼이 어두움 가운데 거하지 않게 하고, 모든 위험을 깨닫게 하고, 이를 피할 길을 알게 한다. 그 분이 혼에게 자신의 빛의 형체를 통해 힘을 주고, 강하게 한다. 그 분이 열심히 싸우는 사람에게 손을 펼쳐, 만약에 그가 깊은 곳으로 빠질 위험이 있으면, 그를 보호한다. 그러나 이 길의 마지막에 가서 혼은 마땅히 벌어들인 안식을 기대할 수 있다. 이 안식은 상상할 수없이 영광스러운 것으로 길을 가는 가운데 치른 어떠한 수고와 번거로움도 이 영광과 비교할 때 크지 않다. 반면에 넓은 길을 간 여행자들은 넓은 길을 가면서 자신의 기쁨과 휴식을 이미 누렸기 때문에 그들의 목표에 도달하게 되었을 때, 누릴 것이 없게 된다.

왜냐하면 그가 다른 목표를 추구했기 때문이다. 그는 한번도 이 길의 끝을 생각하지 않았고 이 땅의 삶에서 모든 평안한 것을 끌어 냈고, 그는 이제 극심한 위험가운데 궁핍하게 되야만 한다. 그러면 그의 운명인 부족함이 그를 더욱 고통스럽게 한다. 왜냐하면 그는 자신의 이 땅의 모든 욕망을 생각하지만 , 이제 자신의 죄악과 욕망을 더 이상 충족시킬 수 없기 때문이다. 왜냐하면 그가 자신의 삶을 혼의 행복을 위해 사용하지 않았기 때문이다. 그가 작은 희생을 치르며 자신을 극복하지 못하였고, 전적으로 즐기기만 했기 때문이다. 이 땅의 삶의 성취는 저 세상의, 마음대로 중단시킬 수 없는, 고통스러운 궁핍함을 의미한다.
