Physical pleasures.... infirmities of old age....
It is obvious frivolity to look at life on earth only from the point of view of what is beneficial to the body. It is difficult to begin to make such people understand the true purpose of earthly life, for they will never want to exclude physical enjoyment and will therefore be inaccessible to other views and teachings, since the content of life is sufficient for them if it consists of earthly pleasures. But the awakening of an erring person will be terrible. For the body will soon no longer be able to cope with the demands of earthly life, it will regocnize its weaknesses and infirmities with increasing age, and nothing will remain of the earthly life that was taken so seriously that will endure when its outer form, the physical shell, begins to become frail. He must now realize that even the most beautiful earthly pleasures lose their appeal when the body no longer possesses its youthful vigour. So life must now also seem dull and empty and useless to him as long as he is only concerned with his body. And again it is a gift of favour when man's body approaches decay faster and faster, because only now there is hope that man gets in touch with his spirit and takes contact with the powers which lovingly take care of man who has now become thoughtful, present to him the uselessness of the previous way of life and try to move him to seriously occupy himself with the spiritual, with the higher development of the soul. The human being is still given ample opportunity to suppress or fight physical desires if he is willing, i.e. if he subordinates himself to divine laws and only allows this will to prevail. However, it is far more meritorious if a person fights earthly pleasures while he is still young and full of zest for life, for the sooner he will attain knowledge, realization, for then his striving will have become active in fullest freedom of will, he will not have been forced to renounce them through physical hardship but will renounce these pleasures of his own accord, and his spirit will have done so, which can now unite with its own kind, as well as its soul, which is determined to think and want differently, will thank it with all intimacy, for only it knows about the right purpose of earthly life, it also regocnizes the dreadful plight of the imperfect spiritual beings torn away from this life, but which first has to be brought before the human being's eyes if he is to be able to free himself from the power which hinders him on the path upwards....

Lichamelijke genoegens – Gebreken door ouderdom
Het is een duidelijke lichtzinnigheid om het aardse leven alleen vanuit het gezichtspunt van wat nuttig voor het lichaam is te beschouwen. Het is een moeilijke onderneming om zulke mensen het ware doel van het leven op aarde begrijpelijk te maken, want ze zullen nooit van lichamelijke genoegens af willen zien en daarom zullen ze ontoegankelijk zijn voor andere opvattingen en onderrichtingen. Het leven heeft voor hen voldoende inhoud, als het uit aardse genoegens bestaat.
Maar het ontwaken van een dwalend mens zal vreselijk zijn. Want het lichaam zal heel spoedig niet meer tegen de eisen van het aardse leven opgewassen zijn. Hij zal met het ouder worden zijn zwakheden en gebreken beseffen en er blijft van het aardse leven, waar zoveel belang aan gehecht wordt, niets over van wat duurzaam is, als zijn uiterlijke vorm, het lichamelijke omhulsel, gebrekkig begint te worden. Hij moet nu toch inzien, dat ook de prettigste aardse genoegens aan aantrekkingskracht verliezen, als het lichaam niet meer de jeugdige kracht bezit. Dus moet het leven nu ook doods en leeg en nutteloos voor hem lijken, zolang hij enkel aan zijn lichaam denkt.
En het is weer een genadegave, als het lichaam van de mens steeds sneller de aftakeling tegemoet gaat, want nu pas is er de hoop, dat de mens zich met zijn geest in verbinding stelt en contact zoekt met de krachten, die het nu nadenkend geworden mens liefdevol aannemen, hem de nutteloosheid van zijn huidige levenswandel laten zien en hem proberen te bewegen om zich ernstig met het geestelijke, met de opwaartse ontwikkeling van de ziel bezig te houden. Er wordt de mens nog voldoende gelegenheid geboden om de lichamelijke begeerten te onderdrukken of te bestrijden als hij gewillig is, dat wil zeggen, dat hij zich aan de goddelijke wetten onderwerpt en alleen nog deze wil laat gelden.
Maar het is veel verdienstelijker, wanneer de mens de aardse genoegens al bestrijdt, zolang hij jong is en vol levensvreugde zit, want des te eerder komt hij tot kennis, tot inzicht, want zijn streven is dan in volledige vrijheid van de wil actief geworden. Hij werd niet door een lichamelijke noodsituatie tot ontzegging gedwongen, maar hij ontzegt zich deze vreugden uit eigen beweging en zowel zijn geest, die zich nu met zijn gelijken verenigen kan, als ook zijn ziel, die ertoe gebracht wordt om anders te denken en te willen, zullen hem nu met alle vurigheid bedanken, want alleen zij kennen het juiste doel van het aardse leven. Zij herkennen ook de vreselijke noodsituatie van het uit dit leven weggerukt en onvolmaakt geestelijk wezen. Maar dit moet de mens eerst onder ogen gebracht worden, als hij zich vrij moet kunnen maken van de macht, die hem hindert op de weg naar boven.
