Fulfilment of duty.... voluntary or compulsory....
Only that is of value for the higher development of the soul which is striven for and realized of one's own free will. People can be urged to live a life that in itself corresponds to God's will. However, they only act under a certain amount of compulsion. If their own will is not involved, the deeds are invalid, i.e. worthless before God. Every fulfilment of duty certainly means a correct life on earth, but no particular merit for eternity. For what is valued in eternity must have emerged from free will. It is not enough to fulfil certain commandments which are given great importance on earth but which have little or no divine will in them. To fulfil the divine commandment of love from the innermost drive.... this includes everything that is beneficial for the soul's development. You will often be required to fulfil the commandment of love out of necessity.... you will be prompted to do deeds which in themselves correspond to God's will if they are carried out of your own free will. However, the human being should not give himself over to the belief that he has fulfilled the lord's will through these deeds and is absorbed in active neighbourly love.... Only his own will is decisive, and it is only judged to what extent he feels lovingly urged to do it. And that is why people are very often honoured by their fellow human beings for their actions or regarded as pious if their inner thoughts do not correspond to their outer actions. A person can only ever do what is required of him according to human laws, but without being in contact with God. A certain ambition and the desire for recognition are the driving force for the greatest fulfilment of duty, but the development of the soul is called into question, for the innermost instinct of the heart alone is decisive. What the world demands must always serve the preservation of worldly power to a certain degree; however, if it is left to man's discretion, then the purpose is also a noble one. For then their own will can become active. Thus, all coercive measures that have the appearance of charity, as well as the compulsory fulfilment of ecclesiastical commandments, have only the least value before God, but every voluntary compliance with them increases the value....

Só isso tem valor para o desenvolvimento superior da alma que se esforça e se realiza de livre vontade. As pessoas podem ser incitadas a viver uma vida que em si mesma corresponda à vontade de Deus. Mas eles só agem sob uma certa compulsão. Se a sua própria vontade não estiver envolvida, as obras são inválidas, ou seja, inúteis perante Deus. Todo cumprimento do dever certamente significa uma vida terrena correta, mas nenhum mérito especial para a eternidade. Pois o que é valorizado na eternidade deve ter surgido do livre arbítrio. Não basta que se cumpram certos mandamentos aos quais se atribui grande importância na Terra, mas que têm pouca ou nenhuma vontade divina neles. Para cumprir o mandamento divino do amor a partir do impulso interior.... isto inclui tudo o que é benéfico para o desenvolvimento da alma. Muitas vezes você será obrigado a cumprir o mandamento do amor compulsoriamente.... sereis levados a fazer atos que, por si mesmos, certamente correspondem à vontade de Deus, se forem realizados por vossa própria vontade. No entanto, o ser humano não deve entregar-se à crença de que cumpriu a vontade do Senhor através deles e está absorvido no amor de vizinhança activa.... Somente a sua própria vontade é decisiva, e somente a medida em que ele se sente amorosamente instado a fazer o que faz será julgado. E, portanto, uma pessoa é muito freqüentemente honrada ou considerada piedosa por seus semelhantes por causa de sua maneira de agir, cujo pensamento interior não corresponde em nada às suas ações externas. Uma pessoa só pode fazer o que lhe é exigido pelas leis humanas sem, no entanto, estar em contacto com Deus. Uma certa ambição e o vício do reconhecimento é o impulso para o maior cumprimento do dever, mas o desenvolvimento da alma é posto em causa, pois só o instinto mais íntimo do coração é decisivo. O que o mundo exige deve sempre servir, em certa medida, à preservação do poder mundano; mas se for deixado às pessoas, então o propósito também é nobre. Pois então a própria vontade pode tornar-se activa. Assim, todas as medidas coercitivas que têm a aparência de amor ao próximo, bem como o cumprimento obrigatório dos mandamentos eclesiásticos, têm apenas o menor valor perante Deus, mas todo o cumprimento voluntário desses mandamentos aumenta o valor....
