Jesus' death on the cross....

Imagining Jesus' death on the cross with all inwardness is so infinitely blessed for the soul that strives for the heights. It was the moment of greatest physical weakness and spiritual strength. Jesus saw His end coming and His spirit was already with the father, but the greatest pain still forced the body to earth and the soul suffered torment in excess because of the darkness of those who were responsible for His death. The suffering of the dying man on the cross was unspeakable, and only a deeply feeling soul can even begin to imagine the humiliations that increased His soul's suffering. He heard the most bitter reproaches from the depths of hell, His body was ostracized.... the whole world was dark and lightless, and the greatness of the guilt of sin lay as a tremendous burden on His shoulders.... He bore this burden and sent up the words: "Father, forgive them...." His soul was love, the most ardent, self-sacrificing love for all these people who were to blame for His unspeakable suffering. He drank the cup to the brim, His body grew weaker, until at last His soul parted and soared up to the father.... Jesus' death on the cross is of such incomprehensible significance for people, and yet this greatest work of love and mercy receives so little attention.... Only the person who is in love is able to measure the greatness of it, but for people without love Jesus' death is meaningless, because they lack any feeling for the sacrifice Jesus Christ made in immense love. For the divinity of Jesus.... the fullness of God's spirit in Him, withdrew from Him at the hour of death and the man Jesus accomplished this deed to redeem people from all guilt of sin. Consequently, the human being suffered, the hour of death was tasted by him without any relief, the body and the soul suffered unimaginable pain.... for only in this way could the work of redemption be accomplished so that humanity's suffering would diminish.... only in this way could all guilt of sin be cancelled, so that excessive love bore the suffering that this guilt of sin inevitably entailed. The world no longer has any understanding for this greatest work of love of a human being, it passes it by carelessly, indeed it seeks to devalue it by attaching no more importance to it than to the act of an idealist whose motives were only later justified in the way that christian doctrine does today. But it is precisely the redemption of man that is called into question, the idea of redemption is rejected and thus Jesus Christ is only regocnized as a world-historical person, but a spiritual connection with the whole of humanity is denied after His death. And this completely wrong thinking of people has made it necessary for the lord to take pity on people again, to convey the pure truth to them so that faith in the redemption through Jesus Christ will not be lost among people but will come alive in them again....

십자가에서 예수님의 죽음.

모든 긴밀함으로 십자가에서 죽으신 예수님을 생각하는 일은 위를 향해 추구하는 혼에게 무한하게 유익하다. 그 순간은 가장 크게 육체적으로는 연약하고, 영적으로는 강한 순간이었다. 예수는 자신의 끝이 다가오는 것을 보았다. 그의 영은 이미 아버지와 함께 했다. 그러나 여전히 가장 큰 고통이 육체를 이 땅에 있도록 강요했다. 그의 죽음에 책임이 있는 사람들의 어두움 때문에 혼이 극심한 고통을 겪었다. 십자가에서 죽어가는 고난은 말할 수 없었다. 단지 깊은 느끼는 혼이 그의 혼의 고통을 증가시킨 굴욕을 비슷하게 상상할 수 있다. 그는 지옥의 깊은 곳에서 오는 가장 혹독한 학대를 받았고, 그의 몸은 멸시를 받았다. 온 세상이 어둡고, 빛이 없었다. 거대한 죄짐의 무게가 그의 어깨를 짓눌렀다.

그는 이 짐을 짊어졌고, 위를 향해 부르짖었다: “아버지, 그들의 죄를 사해주십시오.“ 그의 혼은 사랑이었고, 그의 형언할 수 없는 고통에 대해 책임이 있는 모든 사람을 향한 가장 뜨겁고 자기 희생적인 사랑이었다. 그는 잔을 끝까지 마셨고, 마침내 혼이 분리가 되어 아버지에게 올라갈 때까지 그의 몸은 약해졌다. 예수님의 십자가의 죽음은 사람들에게 상상할 수 없을 만큼 중요한 일이다. 그러나 이 위대한 사랑과 긍휼의 역사는 거의 관심을 받지 못한다. 단지 사랑 안에 있는 사람이 그 크기를 측량할 수 있다. 그러나 사랑이 없는 사람들에게는 예수님의 죽음은 의미가 없다. 왜냐하면 예수 그리스도가 어떤 큰 사랑으로 이런 희생을 드렸는지에 대한 느낌이 전혀 없기 때문이다.

그러나 예수 안에 모든 충만함으로 존재했던 하나님의 영인 예수의 신성은 죽음의 순간에 예수에게서 물러 났다. 인간 예수가 사람들의 모든 죄에서 사람들을 구속하기 위해 이 역사를 완성했다. 그러므로 인간이 고통을 겪었다. 그는 아무런 수월하게 하는 수단이 없이 죽음의 순간을 다 체험했다. 육체와 혼이 상상할 수 없는 고통을 겪었다. 왜냐하면 단지 이런 방법으로 구속의 역사가 성취되어, 인간의 고통을 줄일 수 있기 때문이다. 단지 아주 큰 사랑이 죄짐이 필연적으로 가져온 고통을 짊어 짐으로, 모든 죄짐을 해결할 수 있었다.

세상은 이런 위대한 사랑의 역사를 더 이상 이해하지 못하고, 이런 역사에 주의를 기울이지 않고 지나친다. 세상은 이 역사를 이상주의자의 행동으로 치부하고, 이 역사에 더 이상 의미를 부여하지 않으면서, 이 역사의 가치를 떨어뜨리려고 한다. 이상주의자의 동기를 나중에 오늘날 기독교의 가르침처럼 설명한다. 그러나 이를 통해 바로 인간의 구원에 대한 의심을 제기한다. 구원에 관한 생각을 버리고, 그러므로 예수 그리스도를 단지 세계역사의 한 인물로 인정하지만, 그러나 모든 인류와 그의 죽음과의 영적인 연관관계를 부인한다. 사람들의 이런 완전히 잘못된 생각은 주님 자신이 다시 한번 긍휼로 사람들을 돕게 만들어, 주님은 그들에게 순수한 진리를 전해주었다. 이로써 사람들 가운데 예수 그리스도를 통한 구원을 믿는 믿음이 사라지지 않게 한다.
