Materialists.... transience of earthly possessions....

Nothing in earthly life is more of a hindrance to climbing upwards than the continued attempt to increase earthly goods. Man spends so much energy in vain, which he should only devote to the one goal of increasing spiritual wealth. The more he only strives for earthly wealth, the less he can concern himself with the further development of his soul and the further away he is from the thought of what will become of him after his death.... He does not allow himself to be deterred by such brief thoughts and immediately turns his attention solely to earthly activity, seeks to derive the greatest possible benefit from it and thus remains in constant contact with matter, which he is supposed to overcome during his earthly life. This is all the more regrettable as he now also lacks the strength for spiritual endeavour, for his inclination for earthly possessions attracts all unfair forces which support him, while the good spiritual strength can gain less and less influence over him and thus the battle between good and evil strength has to be waged extraordinarily persistently and the human being's will is needed first in order to fight for a final victory. And this will must turn away from earthly desires, otherwise it will never be possible to gain the upper hand in the battle against evil. He who constantly has only his earthly advantage in mind cannot possibly enter into contact with the forces which have long since overcome all matter. Through this desire he himself erects a barrier between himself and the spiritual forces that want to help him, and the human will must first become active to tear down these barriers, only then will the good forces have access to him and be able to exert their influence. It is therefore extremely difficult for the materialist to accept what is spiritually offered.... he simply lacks any understanding for it because only that force has influence on him which is the most fervent opponent of what is offered to people as the purest truth. This force will naturally strengthen the human being's will to reject it. He lacks realization, he does nothing of his own accord to remedy this deficiency and therefore it will be unspeakably difficult to preach the gospel to a materialist. God's words will only be empty sound and his thoughts will soon wander off again to his earthly affairs, which completely dominate him and are therefore the greatest obstacle to the soul's further development. For this reason the human being must first learn to regocnize the futility of everything earthly before he can successfully start his soul's work; he must be made aware of the uselessness of his earthly life; he must be made aware of the transience of that which fills his whole thinking; it must be brought to his attention that the human being ultimately cannot stop the corruption of earthly things, his decline, if it is divine will that they should fall prey to destruction.... He will have to see all his possessions perish under his hands in order to finally reflect on the values that endure and outlast earthly death....

Materialistas.... Transiência de bens terrenos....

Nada na vida terrena é mais um obstáculo à subida do que a contínua tentativa de aumentar os bens terrenos. O homem gasta tanta energia inutilmente, que só deveria dedicar-se ao único objetivo de aumentar os bens espirituais. Quanto mais ele se esforça apenas pela riqueza terrena, menos ele pode se preocupar com o desenvolvimento posterior da sua alma e mais distante é o pensamento do que será dele após a sua morte. Ele não se deixa assustar por pensamentos tão breves e continua a voltar a sua atenção para a atividade terrena, tenta tirar o maior proveito possível dela e assim permanece em contato constante com a matéria, que no entanto deve superar durante a sua vida terrena. Isso é tanto mais lamentável quanto agora também lhe falta a força para o esforço espiritual, pois a sua inclinação para os bens terrenos atrai todas as forças desonestas que o sustentam, enquanto a boa força espiritual pode ganhar cada vez menos influência sobre ele e assim a batalha entre o bem e o mal tem de ser travada com extraordinária persistência e a vontade do ser humano é necessária primeiro para lutar por uma vitória final. E essa vontade tem que se afastar do desejo terreno, caso contrário nunca será possível ganhar a supremacia na batalha contra o mal. Quem tem constantemente em mente apenas a sua vantagem terrena não pode entrar em contacto com as forças que há muito ultrapassaram toda a matéria. Através desse desejo ele mesmo ergue uma barreira entre si e as forças espirituais que o querem ajudar, e a vontade humana deve primeiro tornar-se ativa para derrubar essas barreiras, só então as forças boas terão acesso a ele e poderão exercer sua influência. Portanto, é extraordinariamente difícil para o materialista aceitar o que é espiritual.... Falta-lhe simplesmente qualquer compreensão para isso, porque só esse poder tem influência sobre ele, que é o adversário mais zeloso do que é oferecido às pessoas como a verdade mais verdadeira. Esta força irá naturalmente fortalecer a vontade do ser humano de rejeitar. Falta-lhe conhecimento, não faz nada por si mesmo para remediar essa deficiência, e assim será inexprimivelmente difícil pregar o Evangelho a um materialista. As palavras de Deus serão apenas um som vazio, e os seus pensamentos logo se desviarão novamente para os seus assuntos terrenos, que o dominam completamente e são, portanto, o maior obstáculo para o desenvolvimento posterior da alma. Por esta razão, o ser humano deve primeiro aprender a reconhecer a inutilidade de todas as coisas terrenas antes de poder começar com sucesso o trabalho da sua alma; deve tomar consciência da futilidade da sua vida terrena; deve tomar consciência da transitoriedade daquilo que preenche todo o seu pensamento; deve tomar consciência do facto de que o ser humano, em última análise, não pode deter a corrupção das coisas terrenas, a sua decadência, se é vontade divina que elas caiam presas na destruição.... Ele terá de ver todos os seus bens perecer debaixo das suas mãos para finalmente reflectir sobre os valores que perduram e superam a morte terrena....
