Obeying the commandments in a state of compulsion....

Compulsion impairs the value of an action. How often is a person tempted to believe that he has fulfilled his duty if he has carried out an action that corresponds to a prescribed law. This is especially true of those laws that were given to men without authority and whose observance was demanded in order to strengthen earthly power. Nothing is more worthless before God than obeying such commandments in a state of compulsion.... And nothing jeopardizes man's salvation more than the belief that he has fulfilled his duty.... For this belief prevents the conscious striving for perfection.... The human being believes himself to be on a level which he has by no means reached, for he believes that he has fulfilled God's demand and has merely complied with human commandments.... and this is of no benefit for eternity. Every fulfilment of duty is a kind of state of compulsion.... certainly worthy of recognition in earthly life but of no noteworthy success for spiritual life, for God demands that every action is based on free will. Man should do everything without external impetus and feel prompted to act from within.... He should carry out everything he does voluntarily and without constraint and not be induced to act by threats or promises.... Only then will these actions be truly beneficial for his soul. Divine will alone should be completely sufficient to allow the earthly child to act accordingly, however, it is not divine will to want to influence people's behaviour through any kind of coercion or pressure. Only God alone has given commandments, yet people believed that they had to tighten these divine commandments and thus a deplorable state of affairs soon developed which is generally threatening for the earthly children, for more attention is paid to the external fulfilment of the commandments again and this is in itself completely without merit.... It is only a form which one fulfils, but which is worthless before God. Servants of God who are too eager to fulfil the commandments have thus created a deplorable state of affairs that has a terrible effect on the soul. Just consider how strongly the view is held that only church attendance brings people closer to God and how it has therefore been made a duty for humanity.... And how therefore the belief has taken root that only he serves God who fulfils this duty.... how, however, church attendance in compulsion kills any deep feeling for the eternal deity if it is carried out according to the rules at the appointed time and thus becomes a mere habit, which no longer has anything in common with (the word) 'service to God'.... And how at the same time, through the fulfilment of this commandment, man is educated to a sham service to God, since everything he now does is prescribed, i.e. no own will or heart's desire drives him to truly serve God. It is a haphazard exercise of actions that are merely the work of men, or human decrees made under the guise of 'expressions of divine will' in order to force people to join a particular church in order to increase its power. And precisely the opposite is achieved with such coercive actions.... something is mechanically carried out that is supposed to be a deepest, inner desire, and all outward appearances are maintained, while the heart can be empty and dead in the process, and such behaviour remains without value before God, precisely because it has a certain state of compulsion as a prerequisite and therefore cannot be valued as such because it does not correspond to the divine will....

강요받는 상태에서 계명에 순종하는 일.

강요는 행동의 가치에 영향을 미친다. 사람이 미리 규정이 된 대로 행했을 때, 자신의 의무를 다했다고 믿고 싶은 유혹을 받는 경우가 얼마나 자주 있느냐? 이런 일은 특히 권한이 없는 사람들이 법을 만들어, 이 법을 통해 세상의 권세를 강하게 하기 위해, 지키도록 요구하는 법에 적용이 된다. 강요를 받는 가운데 그런 법에 순종하는 일보다 하나님 앞에서 더 무가치한 일은 없다. 자신의 의무를 다했다는 믿음보다 인간 혼의 구원을 위태롭게 하는 일은 없다. 왜냐하면 그런 믿음이 온전하게 되기 위한 의식적인 노력을 방해하기 때문이다.

인간은 자신이 아직 도달하지 못한 수준에 있다고 믿는다. 왜냐하면 그는 자신이 하나님의 요구 사항을 충족했다고 믿기 때문이다. 그는 인간의 계명에만 순종했다. 이런 순종은 영원을 위해 쓸모가 없다. 모든 의무의 수행은 일종의 강요의 상태이고, 아마도 이 땅의 삶에서 인정받을 만한 가치가 있지만, 영적인 삶에는 주목할 만한 성공이 아니다. 왜냐하면 하나님은 자유의지가 모든 행동의 기초가 될 것을 요구하기 때문이다. 사람은 외부의 동인이 없이 모든 일을 해야 하며, 내부에서 행동하도록 자극을 느껴야 한다. 그는 자신이 하는 모든 일을 자발적이고 자유롭게 해야 하며, 위협이나 약속에 의해 행동하도록 유도받아서는 안 된다. 그래야만 이런 행동이 그의 혼에 진정으로 유익한 영향을 미친다.

하나님의 뜻이 유일하게 이 땅의 자녀가 하나님의 뜻에 따라 행동하게 하는데 충분해야 한다. 그러나 사람들이 어떤 강요나 압력을 통해 행동하는 방식에 영향을 미치려는 일은 하나님의 뜻이 아니다. 하나님이 유일하게 계명을 주었다. 그러나 사람들은 하나님의 계명을 강화해야 한다고 믿었고, 곧 폐해가 발생하여 일반적으로 이 땅의 자녀들에게 위협이 되고 있다. 왜냐하면 계명의 외적인 성취에 다시 더 많은 관심을 기울이기 때문이다. 그런 일 자체는 전혀 가치가 없다. 그런 일은 단지 사람은 만족하지만, 하나님 앞에서는 무가치한 형식 일뿐이다. 너무 열심을 내려는 하나님의 종들이 혼에 끔찍한 영향을 미치는 폐해를 만들어 냈다.

단지 교회 출석만이 사람들을 신성에 더 가까이 가져다준다는 견해가 얼마나 강력하게 주장되고 있는지에 단지 주의를 기울여보라. 따라서 어떻게 사람편에서 인류에게 이를 의무로 삼았는 지에 주의를 기울여보라. 이 의무를 다하면, 단지 하나님을 섬긴다는 믿음이 어떻게 뿌리를 내리게 되었는 지, 그러나 강요로 교회에 출석하는 일이 특정 시간에 규정에 따라 행해지면, 따라서 더 이상 하나님을 섬긴다는 말과 공통점이 없는 단순한 습관이 되면, 영원한 하나님을 향한 깊은 감정을 얼마나 없애는지에 주의를 기울여보라. 동시에 이런 계명을 지킴으로써 인간이 얼마나 가짜 예배를 드리도록 교육을 받는 지에 주의를 기울여보라. 왜냐하면 그가 이제 행하는 모든 일은 규정이고, 어떤 개인적인 의지나 심장의 필요가 그를 진정으로 하나님을 섬기도록 만들지 않기 때문이다.

그런 일은 단지 인간의 행위인 계획이 없이 행하는 행동이거나 또는 "신의 뜻의 표현"을 가장하고, 교회의 권세를 강하게 하기 위해 사람들을 특정 교회에 소속되게 하는 일이다. 이런 강요하는 행동으로 정확히 그의 반대가 이뤄진다. 가장 깊은 내적인 열망이 되어야 하는 일이 기계적으로 수행이 되고, 모든 외적인 형식은 지켜지는 반면에 이 가운데 심장은 비어 있고 죽은 상태가 될 수 있다. 그런 행동방식은 하나님 앞에 가치가 없다. 왜냐하면 그런 일은 어떤 강요를 전제로 하고, 그러므로 하나님의 뜻과 일치하지 않기 때문에 하나님의 뜻으로 평가될 수 없기 때문이다.
