Obeying the commandments in a state of compulsion....

Compulsion impairs the value of an action. How often is a person tempted to believe that he has fulfilled his duty if he has carried out an action that corresponds to a prescribed law. This is especially true of those laws that were given to men without authority and whose observance was demanded in order to strengthen earthly power. Nothing is more worthless before God than obeying such commandments in a state of compulsion.... And nothing jeopardizes man's salvation more than the belief that he has fulfilled his duty.... For this belief prevents the conscious striving for perfection.... The human being believes himself to be on a level which he has by no means reached, for he believes that he has fulfilled God's demand and has merely complied with human commandments.... and this is of no benefit for eternity. Every fulfilment of duty is a kind of state of compulsion.... certainly worthy of recognition in earthly life but of no noteworthy success for spiritual life, for God demands that every action is based on free will. Man should do everything without external impetus and feel prompted to act from within.... He should carry out everything he does voluntarily and without constraint and not be induced to act by threats or promises.... Only then will these actions be truly beneficial for his soul. Divine will alone should be completely sufficient to allow the earthly child to act accordingly, however, it is not divine will to want to influence people's behaviour through any kind of coercion or pressure. Only God alone has given commandments, yet people believed that they had to tighten these divine commandments and thus a deplorable state of affairs soon developed which is generally threatening for the earthly children, for more attention is paid to the external fulfilment of the commandments again and this is in itself completely without merit.... It is only a form which one fulfils, but which is worthless before God. Servants of God who are too eager to fulfil the commandments have thus created a deplorable state of affairs that has a terrible effect on the soul. Just consider how strongly the view is held that only church attendance brings people closer to God and how it has therefore been made a duty for humanity.... And how therefore the belief has taken root that only he serves God who fulfils this duty.... how, however, church attendance in compulsion kills any deep feeling for the eternal deity if it is carried out according to the rules at the appointed time and thus becomes a mere habit, which no longer has anything in common with (the word) 'service to God'.... And how at the same time, through the fulfilment of this commandment, man is educated to a sham service to God, since everything he now does is prescribed, i.e. no own will or heart's desire drives him to truly serve God. It is a haphazard exercise of actions that are merely the work of men, or human decrees made under the guise of 'expressions of divine will' in order to force people to join a particular church in order to increase its power. And precisely the opposite is achieved with such coercive actions.... something is mechanically carried out that is supposed to be a deepest, inner desire, and all outward appearances are maintained, while the heart can be empty and dead in the process, and such behaviour remains without value before God, precisely because it has a certain state of compulsion as a prerequisite and therefore cannot be valued as such because it does not correspond to the divine will....

Obedecer los mandamientos por obligación....

La compulsión testa valor a una acción. ¿Cuán a menudo el hombre se ve tentado a creer que ha cumplido con su deber cuando ha realizado un acto conforme a una ley prescrita? Esto se aplica en particular a tales leyes que fueron dadas a los seres humanos sin autoridad y cuyo cumplimiento fue exigido para fortalecer nuevamente el poder terrenal. Nada es más inútil ante Dios que obedecer tales mandamientos en estado de compulsión.... Y nada pone más en peligro la salvación del alma que la creencia de que uno ha cumplido su deber.... Porque esta creencia impide el esfuerzo consciente por la perfección....

El hombre piensa que está en un nivel que aún no ha alcanzado porque cree que ha cumplido con los requisitos de Dios y sólo ha cumplido el mandamiento del hombre.... y esto no sirve para la eternidad. Todo cumplimiento del deber es una especie de condición forzada.... ciertamente digna en la vida terrenal, pero sin ningún éxito notable en la vida espiritual, porque Dios exige que toda acción se base en el libre albedrío. El ser humano debe hacer todo sin ser impulsado desde fuera y debe sentirse obligado a actuar desde dentro.... Debe hacer todo lo que hace de forma voluntaria y sin coerción y no debe verse impulsado a actuar mediante amenazas o promesas.... Sólo entonces esta acción tiene un efecto verdaderamente beneficioso para su alma.

La voluntad divina por si sola debería ser suficiente para permitir que el niño terrenal ahora actué en consecuencia, pero querer influir en las acciones del hombre mediante cualquier tipo de compulsión o presión no es voluntad divina. Sólo Dios dio los mandamientos, pero los hombres creyeron que estos mandamientos divinos debían ser más estrictos, por lo que pronto se desarrolló un agravio que generalmente es amenazante para los niños de la tierra, porque nuevamente se presta más atención al cumplimiento exterior de los mandamientos, y esto es en sí completamente inútil.... Es sólo una forma que se satisface, pero que carece de valor ante Dios. Siervos de Dios demasiado entusiastas han provocado así un agravio que tiene un efecto terrible para el alma.

Observe sólo una cosa, con qué fuerza se mantiene la opinión de que sólo la asistencia a la iglesia acerca al hombre a la Deidad, y cómo, por tanto, esto se ha hecho obligatorio para la humanidad por parte del hombre.... Y cómo se arraigó entonces la creencia de que sólo aquel sirve a Dios quien cumple con este deber.... pero así como la compulsión de ir a la iglesia mata cualquier sentimiento profundo por la Deidad eterna, cuando se hace apropiadamente en el momento señalado y, por lo tanto, se convierte en un mero hábito que ya no tiene nada en común con (la palabra) “servir a Dios”.... Y cómo al mismo tiempo por cumplir este mandamiento el hombre es así educado a un servicio a Dios simulado, ya que todo lo que hace es regla, es decir, ninguna voluntad propia o necesidad del corazón lo impulsa a servir verdaderamente a Dios.

Se trata de una realización fortuita de acciones que no son más que obras humanas, o decretos humanos hechos bajo la apariencia de “expresiones de la voluntad divina” para obligar a las personas a pertenecer a una iglesia en particular con el fin aumentar su poder. Y con tales acciones compulsivas se consigue exactamente lo contrario.... se lleva algo a cabo mecánicamente, lo que se supone que es el deseo interior más profundo, y todas las apariencias exteriores se mantienen, mientras que el corazón puede estar vacío y muerto y tal proceder no tiene ningún valor ante Dios, precisamente porque requiere un cierto estado de compulsión y por lo tanto no puede ser evaluada de esta manera, porque no corresponde a la voluntad divina....
