Lack of self-knowledge.... self-love.... stubbornness....

Pay attention to the words that come to you today: The most bitter state of life is prepared by those people themselves who are in perpetual self-destruction and do not implore God's grace to help them, through which they would be freed from the pressure that burdens them. These people always see their own situation as so deplorable and become more and more entangled in gloomy feelings and their whole being is ultimately just one of boundless bitterness, and that without any real cause. Their self-love is too strongly developed to overcome themselves, and they are much more likely to see the fulfilment of life in the fate of other people, and so a just judgement always remains something alien to these people. They reject all rational reasons and thus have a much more difficult life due to their own stubbornness, because good will would allow them to master life much more easily. Life itself is so instructive and provides so much guidance, if only it is utilized in the right way and people take refuge in working in love in all emotional distress. The balance is then created, as it were, and the heart becomes glad.... And when one's own person is put aside, all heaviness falls away from the person of its own accord and he finds the fulfilment of life in working for others. The purpose of life is only ever the maturing of oneself, a renunciation of the fulfilment of one's own desires and a perpetual willingness to serve. The more a person can subordinate himself, the freer his spiritual state will become, and the more often he practices self-conquest, the stronger his will will become, and this work on himself will bring about an ennoblement of the whole being, only the well-being of his fellow human being will then ever be taken into consideration, and the painful state which torments the human being will be remedied.... And this is brought about by the will to act.... it is much easier to defeat the world than oneself.... Man does not want to admit that he is the author of his condition, he always looks for the cause elsewhere than in himself, and that is his fault.... Where self-knowledge is lacking, help is hard to come by.... because then where should the lever be applied.... Those who only want to criticize others, but never themselves, will hardly recognize the basic evil, they will only ever find themselves pitiable and will not muster the will to put an end to their condition, which is nevertheless depressing. And so there is only one thing that has the right effect on such a mind.... to lovingly draw its attention to its wrong attitude towards life, which man should master himself and not allow himself to be mastered by it, which is the case every time he suffers under the pressure of his mood and cannot find a way out. Where there is the will, there is also the deed, and only this frees man from all evil....

La mancanza di auto conoscenza – L’amor proprio - La caparbietà

Bada alle Parole che oggi ti giungono: Gli uomini stessi si preparano la più amara condizione della vita, che si trovano sempre e continuamente nell’auto bisogno e non chiedono supplicando l’Aiuto alla Grazia di Dio, attraverso il Quale verrebbero liberati dalla pressione che li aggrava. Questi uomini vedono sempre la propria situazione come lamentevole e si smarriscono sempre di più in sentimenti d’afflizione e tutto il loro essere è alla fine solo ancora sconfinatamene disperato e questo senza un vero motivo. Per superare sé stessi, è troppo sviluppato il loro amor proprio, e nella sorte di altri uomini vedono piuttosto l’esaudimento della vita, e così un giusto giudizio rimane per questi uomini sempre qualcosa di estraneo. Rifiutano tutti i motivi della ragione e così hanno una vita molto più difficile a causa della propria caparbietà, perché la buona volontà farebbe loro affrontare la vita in modo più facile.

La vita stessa è così istruttiva e fornisce così molteplice stimolo, se soltanto viene utilizzata bene e ci si rifugi in tutta l’oppressione animica nell’agire d’amore. Allora è per così dire creato il pareggio, ed il cuore è lieto. E quando la propria persona viene retrocessa, cade da sé ogni peso dall’uomo. Lo scopo della vita è comunque sempre la maturazione di sé stesso, una rinuncia all’esaudimento di propri desideri ed un sempre continuo servire volenteroso. Più l’uomo si può sottomettere, più libera sarà la condizione del suo spirito, e più spesso si esercita nell’auto superamento, più forte sarà la sua volontà, e questo lavoro su sé stesso procura una nobilitazione di tutto l’essere, allora verrà sempre soltanto rispettato il bene del prossimo, e la condizione penosa, che tormenta l’uomo, è sospesa. E questo lo opera la volontà nell’azione, è molto più facile vincere il mondo che sé stesso.

L’uomo non vuole ammettere di essere l’autore della sua condizione, cerca sempre la causa ovunque eccetto che in sé stesso, e questo è il suo errore. Dove manca l’auto conoscenza, è difficile portare aiuto, perché dove dev’essere posta la leva? Chi vuole esercitare la critica solo sugli altri, ma mai su sé stesso, difficilmente riconoscerà il male di fondo, troverà sempre soltanto sé stesso da compiangere, e non avrà la volontà a creare la fine della sua condizione che lo opprime.

E così c’è solo una cosa di un vero effetto su un tale animo, di fargli notare con tutto l’amore la sua falsa predisposizione verso la vita, che l’uomo deve vincere sé stesso e non farsi vincere da questo, cosa che è comunque ogni volta il caso, quando soffre sotto la pressione del suo umore e non si procura nessuna via d’uscita. Dov’è la volontà, c’è anche l’azione, e solo questa libera l’uomo da ogni male.
