De bereidwilligheid om op te nemen

De bereidwilligheid om op te nemen komt pas dan met de wil van God overeen, als het lichaam en de ziel zich volledig aan de geest overgeven. Als de ziel in het geheel geen acht slaat op het lichaam of ook het lichaam hetzelfde wil als de ziel: enkel de stem van de geest in zich te horen. Hoe minder het lichaam de ziel hindert, des te duidelijker hoort de ziel wat de geest haar over wil dragen. Dan probeert de ziel zich met de geest te verenigen.

Deze verbinding is onvergelijkbaar waardevol. De ziel is in zekere zin vrij. Ze is niet meer gebonden aan haar lichaam, maar dichter bij haar eigenlijke doel. Ze leeft in het geestelijke rijk, ofschoon ze nog op aarde verblijft. En het lichaam is gedurende deze tijd volledig passief, totdat de ziel deze weer tot leven wekt.

Zodra de mens deze graad van bereidwilligheid om op te nemen bereikt heeft, zal het gemakkelijk voor hem zijn om geestelijke boodschappen in ontvangst te nemen en ook een blik te werpen in het rijk, dat het vaderland van de geest is. En om deze graad te bereiken, is alleen maar het vurigste gebed tot God en een volledige overgave aan Hem nodig, vooropgesteld dat het leven van degene die opneemt een onbaatzuchtig werkzaam zijn in liefde is. Dan beleeft de mens een verandering in zich. Hij voelt zich van de aarde bevrijd. Hij wordt door God gegrepen en het lichaam geeft elke tegenstand op. Hij buigt zich onder de wil van de ziel, die naar de geest streeft en betekent dus geen hindernis voor de ziel.

Vaak is deze verbinding alleen maar door de grootste zelfoverwinning tot stand te brengen. De ziel dringt nog niet volledig naar de geest in zich. Ze laat zich nog door het lichaam beïnvloeden. Dat wil zeggen dat ze nog te veel aandacht schenkt aan diens verlangen. Ze is nog niet zo tot het aannemen van de boodschappen bereid, als bevorderlijk is om deze moeiteloos in ontvangst te kunnen nemen. En dan moet de ziel worstelen om kracht en doorzettingsvermogen. Ze moet tegen haar lichaam strijden. Ze moet ook het verstandelijke denken uitschakelen en zich alleen nog maar door de stem van het hart laten dirigeren. Ze moet de wereld kunnen vergeten om zichzelf terug te vinden in het geestelijke rijk. En ze moet deze vlucht omhoog vaak beoefenen om zich altijd te kunnen bevrijden uit haar lichamelijke omhulsel. Om altijd de stem in zich te kunnen horen om waardevolle boodschappen uit het geestelijke rijk te ontvangen.

Wanneer de ziel niet in staat is om de stem van de geest in zich te horen, dan is of haar voorbereiding niet overeenkomstig de goddelijke wil, dat wil zeggen dat de ziel zich niet volledig kan scheiden van de aarde en van dat, wat aards is, of de geest kan zich tegenover haar niet uiten, omdat haar bekwaamheid om te horen nog niet ontwikkeld is. En dat laatste is het geval, als de ziel zich nog niet tot liefde veranderd heeft. Dan zal het stil in haar blijven als ze luistert, want de stem van de geest klinkt zo zacht, dat elke valse toon, die in een nog onrijpe ziel klinkt, deze stem overstemt. De ziel moet het omhulsel rondom zich opengebroken hebben, wat door een God welgevallige levenswandel tot stand gebracht wordt. Dan kan ze de zachtste toon in zich horen en bijgevolg ook naar het verstand leiden om deze zodoende als mens weer te geven.

In elk mens zijn goddelijke wijsheden verborgen. Dat wil zeggen dat de goddelijke geestvonk in elk mens sluimert, die, omdat die een deel van de eeuwige Godheid is, ook in de goddelijke wijsheid binnen kan dringen en deze dan aan de mensen geven kan. Maar of de ziel zich ertoe in staat stelt om te ontvangen wat de geest haar overdragen wil, hangt van de wil van de mens af. Of hij zich door een werkzaam zijn in liefde ontwikkelt.

De mens moet dus willen luisteren en kunnen luisteren. Hij moet zich bereid verklaren tot het in ontvangst nemen van boodschappen van boven. Maar hij moet ook door God waardig bevonden worden om met geestelijke boodschappen bedacht te worden.

Zodoende kan wel ieder mens het goddelijk geestelijke werkzaam zijn nastreven, er dus naar verlangen, maar hij moet tegelijkertijd de voorwaarden vervullen, die voor het werkzaam zijn van de geest gesteld zijn. Het werkzaam zijn van de goddelijke geest is wel een genadegeschenk, maar ze wordt de mens toch niet zonder diens waardigheid en diens naar God toegekeerde wil toegestuurd. Zodra het werkzaam zijn van de goddelijke geest begint af te nemen, ligt dat geheel aan de mens, van wie het geestelijke streven afneemt of doordat hij te nauw met de wereld verbonden is, hetgeen voor zijn opwaartse vlucht hinderlijk is.

Het is de goddelijke wil dat de mens voortdurend worstelt. Dat zijn streven naar Hem niet afneemt. En daarom zullen hindernissen de weg voor hem onbegaanbaar maken en hij moet dan met grotere krachtinspanning deze hindernissen proberen te overwinnen. Hij moet, als hem de kracht daartoe ontbreekt, bidden om kracht. Hij moet zich inniger en vaker in gedachten met God verbinden. Hij moet hem zijn nood voorleggen en in een gelovig vertrouwen Zijn hulp tegemoetzien.

God eist een sterk geloof. Een geloof, dat nooit wankel wordt, ofschoon de verleidingen op hem afkomen. Het vertrouwen in Gods hulp moet zo groot zijn, dat niets in staat is om de mensen met zorgen en angst naar de toekomst te laten kijken. Gods liefde en Gods almacht moeten de mensen steeds voor ogen staan als diens geloof begint aan het wankelen gebracht te worden. En zo’n diepgelovig mens zal ook geschikt zijn om Gods geestelijke geschenken in ontvangst te nemen. Hij zal de wereld verachten en een leven leiden in de nauwste verbinding met God en zijn geest zal zich aan de ziel bekendmaken, waar en wanneer ze het maar verlangt.

The willingness to receive is only in accordance with God's will when body and soul completely abandon themselves to the spirit, i.e. when the body remains completely unnoticed by the soul or when the body wants the same as the soul.... only to hear the voice of the spirit within itself. The less the body hinders the soul, the more clearly the soul hears what the spirit wants to convey to it. The soul then tries to come to an agreement with the spirit. This bond is incomparably valuable, the soul is in a sense free, it is no longer bound by its body but closer to its actual purpose.... it lives in the spiritual realm, although it still dwells on earth. And the body is completely inactive during this time until the soul revitalizes it. As soon as the human being can establish this degree of receptiveness it will be easy for him to receive spiritual messages and also to take a look into the kingdom which is the spirit's home. And in order to reach this degree all that is required is heartfelt prayer to God and complete devotion to Him, providing that the recipient's life is a selfless labour of love. Then the human being experiences a change in himself, he feels removed from earth, he is seized by God, and the body gives up all resistance, it bends under the will of the soul, which strives towards the spirit, and therefore no longer represents an obstacle for the latter. Often this connection can only be established with the greatest overcoming of itself, the soul does not yet completely push towards the spirit within itself, it still allows itself to be influenced by the body, i.e., it still pays too much attention to its desires.... it is not yet as ready to receive the spirit's messages as it needs to be in order to accept them effortlessly. And then the soul must struggle for firmness and endurance, it must fight against its body, it must also switch off intellectual thinking and only allow itself to be guided by the voice of the heart, it must be able to forget the world in order to find itself again in the spiritual kingdom.... And it must often practice this flight to the heights in order to be able to free itself from its physical shell at any time, in order to be able to hear the voice within itself at any time, in order to receive precious messages from the spiritual realm.... (14.10.1942) If the soul is unable to hear the voice of the spirit within itself, then its preparation is either not in accordance with divine will, i.e., the soul cannot completely separate itself from the earth and that which is earthly, or the spirit cannot express itself to it because its ability to hear is not yet developed. And the latter is the case if the soul has not yet changed to love. Then it will remain silent in it if it listens, for the voice of the spirit sounds so finely that every discordant tone which sounds in a still immature soul drowns out this voice. The soul must have shattered the shell around it, which a God-pleasing way of life brings about. Then it can hear the subtlest sound within itself and consequently also transmit it to the intellect, i.e. reproduce it as a human being. Divine wisdom is hidden in every human being, i.e. the divine spiritual spark slumbers in every human being, which, because it is part of the eternal divinity, can also penetrate divine wisdom and impart it to the human being. But whether the soul makes itself receptive to what the spirit wants to impart to it depends on the human being's will, whether he moulds himself through loving activity. The human being must therefore want to listen and be able to listen.... He must declare himself willing to receive the messages from above, but he must also be deemed worthy by God to be given spiritual messages.... So every human being can certainly strive for the divine working of the spirit, i.e. desire it, but at the same time he must fulfil the conditions that are set for the working of the spirit. The working of the spirit of God is indeed a gift of grace, yet it does not come to a person without his worthiness and God-centred will. As soon as the working of the spirit of God begins to diminish, this is only due to the human being who is slackening in his spiritual endeavour or who is too closely connected to the world, which is an obstacle to his flight of ascent. It is in the divine will that the human being constantly struggles so that he does not become slack in his striving towards Him. And therefore obstacles will often make the path impassable for him, and he then has to try to overcome these obstacles with increased effort, he has to pray for strength if he lacks the strength to do so; he has to unite himself more intimately and more often with God in thought, he has to present his adversity to Him and look forward to His help with faithful confidence. God demands a strong faith, a faith that never wavers, even though temptations approach him.... Confidence in God's help should be so strong that nothing is able to make people look to the future with worry and fear.... God's love and God's omnipotence should always be before the eyes of a person whose faith begins to waver. And such a deeply believing person will also be able to receive God's spiritual gifts; he will despise the world and live a life of closest closeness to God, and his spirit will manifest itself to the soul where and when it desires it....
