Poort naar de eeuwigheid – Velerlei graden – Lichtrijk – Duisternis

De poort naar de eeuwigheid moet door elk mens gepasseerd worden. En evenzo moet elk wezen, dat de gang over de aarde eenmaal begonnen is, ook de belichaming als mens doormaken. Dus bijgevolg wordt al het wezenlijke er eens voor geplaatst om het aardse omhulsel af te doen en zonder lichaam naar het rijk aan gene zijde te gaan. Maar hoe verschillend kan deze overgang vanuit het aardse domein naar het eeuwige rijk zijn?

Deze overgang betekent voor het wezen niet altijd verlossing. Dat wil zeggen de bevrijding uit alle boeien, hoewel alle lichamelijke last van hem afvalt. Maar de boeien, die het nu voelt, kunnen veel meer belastend zijn dan het aardse omhulsel ooit voor het wezen was. Maar een uitermate vrijer, gelukbrengender toestand kan het voorafgaande aardse leven aflossen en het wezen kan van alle kwellingen, alle boeien en alle lijden ontheven zijn. Een op aarde in gebrekkigheid levend mens kan bijvoorbeeld het kostelijkste lot in het hiernamaals verwachten. En niets herinnert hem meer aan zijn aardse toestand, want zijn leven nu is licht, vrijheid en onzegbaar geluk.

Opnieuw verruilt zo menig mens een aards leven van zelfvoldane behaaglijkheid, vreugden en lichamelijke genietingen tegen een ellendig bestaan in het hiernamaals, waar het hem aan alles ontbreekt, wat hem het huidige leven draaglijk zou kunnen maken. En deze overgang is voor het wezen onnoemelijk bitter, wanneer het zijn eigen schuld inziet en zijn onbenut aards leven beseft, evenals de eindeloos lange gang over de aarde daarvoor.

Want nu duiken de herinneringen aan de vele voorstadia, die hij doorleefd heeft, op. En hoe meer hij zich hiervan bewust wordt, des te meer zal zijn toestand kwellen, terwijl het bevrijde wezen eveneens deze geestelijke ontwikkelingsgang bekijkt en God boven alles looft en prijst om Zijn goedheid en zorg, die hem zijn uiteindelijk vrij worden mogelijk maakte.

Zo zal de overgang naar het rijk aan gene zijde dus ondenkbaar vele geestelijke graden herkenbaar laten worden. Er zullen maar weinig wezens zijn, die in een stralende overvloed van licht ontwaken, maar van de duistere gedaanten zullen er onbeschrijflijk veel zijn en hun ontwaken zal vreselijk zijn. Want hun verblijfplaats is net zo donker en zonder licht als de toestand van hun ziel. Ze gaan die sfeer binnen, die overeenkomt met de staat van hun rijpheid. Ze hebben tijdens hun gang over de aarde nooit naar licht verlangd en hen is nu het lot ten deel gevallen, dat ze op aarde nagestreefd hebben.

Ze worden niet onrechtvaardig bedacht, maar ze ontvangen, waar ze naar verlangden. Ze zijn in een omgeving, die geheel en al dat vervult, waar hun geestelijke toestand aanspraak op maakt. Maar overeenkomstig zalig zijn degenen, die reeds op aarde naar het licht verlangden, want voor hen straalt het in alle volheid en kracht. Het geestelijke streven op aarde heeft nu in het hiernamaals effect, want de mens heeft van tevoren rijkdom verzameld, die nu zijn zalige toestand teweegbrengt.

Nu bestaat er geen ander onderscheid tussen de wezens dan de lichtsterkte. Maar wee het wezen bij wie het licht nog ontbreekt, die er nog nooit naar verlangde en er ook nu nog voor vlucht. Verdrukking, treurigheid, woede en duisternis is zijn lot en dit kan ook niet naar believen veranderd worden, zolang het verlangen naar licht in het wezen niet actief wordt. Het wezen moet lijden, dat wil zeggen dat het iets ontbeert, ofschoon zijn wil er niet naar verlangt. Het voelt de kwellingen van de duisternis en toch probeert het er niet aan te ontsnappen, omdat deze duisternis tegelijkertijd ook de wil belemmert. En dit door eigen schuld.

Pas het verlangen naar licht laat de wil werkzaam worden, maar zelden verlangt een wezen in het hiernamaals naar het licht, dat het op aarde afgewezen heeft. Het is het betreurenswaardigste, dat de instelling van de mens op aarde zich zelden in het hiernamaals verandert. Dat het wezen in dezelfde afwijzing volhardt voor een vaak onvoorstelbaar lange tijd. En dat het niet door dwang het inzicht gegeven kan worden. Maar dat de wezens nu ook niet de mogelijkheid hebben om iets, dat geestelijk rijp is, te zien, omdat ze diens overvloed aan licht in hun onvolmaakte toestand niet zouden kunnen verdragen. Dat hun dus weer geen zichtbaar bewijs geleverd kan worden, die hun verkeerde instelling zou kunnen veranderen. Want zo’n bewijs zou hen weer alleen maar richten. Dat wil zeggen hen onder dwang naar het inzicht leiden. In elke staat, hoe donker ook, moet het wezen zichzelf vrij proberen te maken. Het moet willen, dat het vrij wordt en pas dan zal het licht om zich heen bespeuren.

Maar alles wat in het volle licht staat, ziet en herkent de heerlijkheid van God. Het ziet zaken, die het tot dusverre niet kende. Het ziet de samenhang van de hele schepping. Hij heeft de kennis en is dus ook in de nabijheid van God, want God is het licht, dat al deze wezens verlicht. En dus is de toegang tot het leven in het hiernamaals steeds een scheiding tussen licht en duisternis. Een scheiding tussen de wezens, die naar God verlangden en degenen, die slechts de wereld en haar goederen kenden. De eersten verlangden bewust naar het licht en de laatsten naar de vorst van de duisternis. En derhalve krijgt iedereen, waar hij tijdens zijn gang over de aarde naar verlangde.

Entrance to eternity.... many stages.... kingdom of light - darkness....

The gate to eternity has to be passed through by every human being.... and likewise every being which has once taken the path on earth also has to go through the embodiment as a human being, consequently every being is once faced with the task of shedding its earthly shell and passing bodilessly into the kingdom of the beyond. But how different this transition from the earthly realm into the eternal kingdom can be. This transition does not always mean redemption for the being, i.e. liberation from all fetters, although all earthly body weight falls away from it. However, the bondage it now feels can be far more burdensome than the earthly shell ever was for the being.... But it is also possible for an immensely free, happiness-inducing state to replace the previous earthly life and for the being to be relieved of all torment, all fetters and all suffering. For example, a person living in poverty on earth can expect the most marvellous fate in the beyond and nothing will remind him of his earthly state, for his life from now on is light, freedom and unspeakable happiness. Again, many a person exchanges an earthly life in full comfort, joys and physical pleasures for a miserable existence in the beyond, where he lacks everything that could make his present life bearable. And this change is unspeakably bitter for the being as long as it realizes its own guilt and regocnizes its unused life on earth as well as the endlessly long life on earth before. For now the memories of the many previous stages it had lived through emerge in it, and the more it realizes this the more agonizing its state becomes, while the liberated being likewise sees this spiritual development and praises and glorifies God above all else for His kindness and care which made its final liberation possible. Thus the transition into the kingdom of the beyond will reveal an inconceivable number of spiritual levels. The beings who awaken in a radiant fullness of light will only be few, but the dark forms will be indescribably many and the awakening for them terrible. For their sojourn is just as dark and lightless as their state of soul, they enter those spheres which correspond to their state of maturity.... They have never desired light during their life on earth, and they have now been granted the fate they aspired to on earth. They are not treated unjustly but receive what they asked for.... They are in an environment that completely fulfils what their spiritual state demands. But correspondingly blessed are those who already desired the light on earth, for it shines for them in all its fullness and power. The striving of the spirit on earth now has an effect in the beyond, for the human being has previously accumulated wealth, which now brings about his blissful state. Now there is no other difference between the beings than that of the strength of light.... But woe to those beings who lack the light, who have never desired it and are still fleeing.... Oppression, sadness, indignation and darkness is their fate, and this cannot be changed at will as long as the desire for light is not awakened in the being. The being has to suffer, i.e. it is deprived of something although its will does not desire it.... it feels the torment of darkness and yet does not try to escape it because this darkness simultaneously inhibits the will, and this through its own fault. Only the desire for light lets the will become active, but rarely does a being in the beyond desire light which has rejected it on earth. This is the regrettable fact that the human being's attitude on earth rarely changes in the beyond, that the being often remains in the same rejection for an inconceivably long time.... and that it cannot be forcibly guided towards realization.... but that the beings then also have no opportunity to behold the spiritually mature since they would be unable to endure its abundance of light in their imperfect state.... that therefore no visible evidence can be given to them again which could change their wrong attitude. For such proof would again only judge them, i.e. lead them forcibly to realization. In every state, no matter how devoid of light it may be, the being must try to free itself, it must want to become free and only then will it feel light around itself. Yet everything full of light sees and regocnizes the glory of God.... It sees things it was previously unaware of, it sees the correlation of all creation, it is in the knowledge and is therefore also close to God.... for God is the light Which illuminates all these beings. And so the entrance to the life beyond is always a separation of light and darkness.... a separation of the beings who were in the desire for God and those who only knew the world and its goods.... The former consciously desired the light, the latter the prince of darkness, and thus everyone will receive what he desires during his earthly life....
