자신에 대한 작업을 위해 혼의 불멸을 믿는 믿음이 필요하다.

사람들은 이 땅의 삶이 단지 목적을 위한 수단이고, 절대로 이 땅의 삶 자체에 목적이 있는 것이 아님을 깨달아야만 한다. 단지 이런 깨달음이 비로소 사람들이 이 땅에서 사는 이유인 목표를 달성하기 위해 노력하도록 자극한다. 결과적으로, 혼이 죽음 후에도 계속 산다는 믿음이 사람에게 전해져야만 하고, 비록 사람에게 증명할 수 없을지라도, 그에게 혼이 불멸한 이유를 설명해줘야만 한다. 그가 불멸하다는 가르침을 이해할 수 있게 해주는 지식이 그에게 제공돼야만 한다. 이로써 그가 증거 없이도 쉽게 믿을 수 있게 해야 한다. 그러면 그는 비로소 이 땅을 목적을 위한 수단으로 여기고, 자신의 모든 삶을 죽음 후에 계속 산다는 것을 고려하면서 살게 된다.

단지 이런 생각이 이제 비로소 그가 세상의 재물을 다른 눈으로 바라보게 한다. 왜냐하면 그는 이제 세상의 재물이 일시적인 것으로 평가하는 법을 배우고, 그의 관점이 영원토록 지속되는 것들로 향하기 때문이다. 그가 이제 하는 일은 저세상의 삶과 관련된 일이 된다. 삶이 죽음으로 끝나지 않는다고 믿는 사람은 죽음 후의 삶이 어떻게 될 수 있는지에 대해 생각한다. 그러므로 그는 자신의 영을 위로 보낸다. 다시 말해 이 땅의 삶을 마친 혼이 머무르는 지역으로 보낸다. 그는 이제 이런 영역에서 생각을 통해 설명을 받고, 사람이 이제 전적인 확신을 가지고 자신을 이 땅의 여행자로 여기고, 자신의 삶의 여정이 곧 끝날 것으로 여기고, 이런 짧은 이 땅의 시간을 최대한 활용하려고 노력한다.

그러므로 인간이 자신의 혼에 대한 작업을 시작하려면, 불멸을 믿는 믿음이 절대적으로 필요하다. 이런 믿음이 또한 사람이 순전히 세상적으로 삶을 사는 일을 막는다. 그러나 혼이 계속 산다는 것에 대한 반박할 수 없는 증거를 제시할 수 없다. 이런 가르침을 절대로 증명할 수 없지만, 그러나 열심히 생각하는 일을 통해 가장 깊은 확신을 가질 수 있다. 이는 마치 모든 영적인 것을 증명할 수 없는 것과 같다. 이로써 인간의 자유의지가 제한되지 않고, 따라서 믿음이 강요를 받지 않게 된다.

Belief in the immortality of the soul necessary to work on oneself....

People must realize that earthly life is only a means to an end, but never an end in itself. Only this realization spurs them on to strive to reach the goal for the sake of which man walks on earth. Consequently, the belief in the soul's survival after death must be conveyed to him, the immortality of the soul must be explained to him, even though this cannot be proven to the human being. Knowledge must be made accessible to him which makes the doctrine of immortality understandable to him, so that it now becomes easy for him to believe even without proof. Only then does he regard the earth as a means to an end and orientates his whole life towards survival after death. Only this thought allows him to look at earthly goods with different eyes, for he now learns to assess their transience and focusses his attention on the things that last for eternity. And what he now does, he brings into connection with the life beyond. As soon as the human being believes that life has no end with death he thinks about what kind of life after death may be; thus he sends his spirit upwards, i.e. to regions which are the soul's abode after the end of earthly life. And in these regions he is now given information, namely mentally, so that the human being now full of conviction regards himself as a traveller on earth whose course of life will soon be over and he tries to make productive use of this short time on earth. The belief in immortality is therefore inevitably necessary if the human being is to begin the work on his soul, just as this belief also prevents the human being from living a purely worldly life. However, there is no irrefutable proof of the soul's survival. This, too, is a teaching that can never be proven, but which can become the deepest conviction through diligent reflection, just as everything spiritual is not to be proven, so that the free will of man is not restricted and faith is therefore an unconstrained one....
