La via larga - Tentazioni - La via stretta verso l’Alto

La via che la maggior parte degli uomini percorre, è larga e piana e conduce attraverso giardini meravigliosi, attraverso i quali passa gioendo, questa via offre costanti diversivi ed attirerà sempre gli uomini di rimanervi e di gustare fino in fondo ciò che sembra affascinante al viandante. E non dovrà mai camminare solitario, ci saranno sempre altri uomini che lo accompagnano, che percorrono la stessa via con le stesse gioie e le stesse speranze come lui, perché tutti cercano solo gioie e godimenti mondani, perché tutti loro soccombono alle stesse seduzioni e perciò l’uno ha comprensione per l’agire dell’altro. E’ la via larga che viene percorsa da innumerevoli uomini, che solo pochi evitano per percorrere i sentieri stretti che conducono in Alto. Costoro sanno che la via stretta conduce ad un’altra meta e nella conoscenza di questa meta evitano perciò la via larga, la quale, non notato dagli uomini, conduce verso il basso e perciò non può essere la retta via verso l’Alto. Dalla via larga si diramano sempre di nuovo delle strette vie secondarie e su queste vie staranno sempre dei messaggeri e si offrono come guida a coloro, che vogliono abbandonare la via larga e tendono con seria volontà verso l’Alto. Solo pochi seguiranno la loro offerta, solo pochi si potranno separare dalla via larga del divertimento e della gioia. Solo pochi baderanno a costoro che si offrono loro come guida. Perché dove una via stretta devia verso l’Alto, là la via larga offre sempre particolari divertimenti, là guizzano così tante luci d’abbaglio, che non viene vista la via stretta e tutti tendono solo a queste luci che li guidano sempre di più nell’errore. Questa via larga è stata disposta dal signore del mondo che provvede sempre, affinché non diventi insipida e noiosa per i suoi passanti, e che impiega tutte le arti di seduzione particolarmente là, dove le vie strette si diramano verso l’Alto. Allora l’occhio rimane attaccato e l’uomo molto facilmente non vede la via secondaria e cade vittima di quelle arti di seduzione. Ma ci sono anche uomini che si distolgono da tutte queste tentazioni del mondo, perché riconoscono la loro inutilità e perché seguono un’altra meta, di raggiungere Dio, il Quale non può mai Essere raggiunto sulla via larga. E costoro cercano delle deviazioni dalla via larga e si affidano volentieri e disponibili a coloro che li vogliono guidare verso l’Alto. E si sforzano anche di attirare agli uomini sul sentiero stretto e di tenere davanti a loro la giusta meta e di indurli a camminare con loro sulla via verso l’Alto. E tutti raggiungeranno la loro meta. Certo, terrenamente rinunciano a qualcosa, ma ricevono qualcosa di molto più prezioso, prendono possesso del Regno che offre cose molto più meravigliose, che però può essere raggiunto solo attraverso un costante superamento, ma non attraverso gioie terrene, attraverso il godimento mondano.

Wide Street.... temptations.... narrow way to the height....

The road along which most people walk is wide and level, and it leads through beautiful gardens which are walked through with pleasure, it constantly offers variety and will always entice people to linger and savour what seems appealing to the walker.... And he will never need to walk along alone, there will always be people in his company who walk the same path with the same joys and the same hopes as him, because they all only seek worldly pleasures and enjoyments, because they all succumb to the same temptations and therefore one always has understanding for the other's goings-on.... It is the broad road that is trodden by countless people, which only a few avoid in order to walk narrow paths that lead upwards.... These know that the narrow path leads towards another aim, and in the knowledge of this aim they therefore avoid the broad road, which.... unnoticed by people.... and therefore cannot be the right path to the heights. Again and again narrow side roads branch off from the broad road, and messengers will always stand along these roads and offer to guide those who want to leave the broad road and earnestly strive upwards. Only a few will follow their offer, only a few will be able to separate themselves from the broad road of pleasure and lust.... Only a few will respect those who offer themselves to them for guidance.... For wherever a narrow path branches off to the heights, there the broad road offers special pleasures.... there flash so many dazzling lights that the narrow path is overlooked and all strive only towards these lights which lead them ever more astray. This wide road is laid out by the lord of the world, who always sees to it that it does not become dull and boring for its passers-by, and who especially uses all the arts of seduction where the narrow paths branch off upwards. Then the eye remains spellbound, and the person very easily overlooks the side path and falls victim to those arts of seduction. But there are also people who turn away from all these temptations of the world because they recognize their unworthiness and because they pursue a different aim.... to reach God, Who can never be reached by the broad way. And these seek diversions from the broad road, and they gladly and willingly entrust themselves to those who want to lead them upwards. And they also endeavour to entice other people onto the narrow path and hold the right aim up to them and induce them to join them on the path to ascent.... And they will all reach their aim.... They may give up many earthly things, but they receive far more valuable things.... they take possession of the kingdom which offers far more glorious things, but which can only be reached through constant overcoming, but not through earthly pleasures, through worldly enjoyment....
