Is life on earth an end in itself or the means to an end....

The life of a human being on earth would have no real reason if it was merely an end in itself.... With other words, you humans would find it difficult to find a real reason for it because you can clearly see the vast differences between human destinies and would constantly question the purpose of a hard, sorrowful, miserable life. Yet you could find an immediate answer if you looked at life not as an end in itself but as the means to an end. If every person's fate were the same, if every human being's life consisted of harmony, no problems, pleasures and worldly happiness, hardly differing from other people's lives, then you could certainly believe that there is no deeper purpose to earthly life than that of life itself. But as soon as you seriously think about it you will not be satisfied with this explanation.... you will search for a deeper reason and will certainly find it because it only requires a question on your part in order to give you an answer. And all human beings should ask themselves this question.... For it really does not show intelligence or intellectual activity if a person is satisfied to experience life merely as a whim of the Creator. Every person who claims to be intelligent would hardly use his time and effort making entirely useless things.... nor would he want to regard himself as an entirely useless creature with the sole purpose of supporting himself.... without being able to determine the length of his existence.... Is earthly life an end in itself or the means to an end?....

It could be very beneficial for someone lacking in faith to raise this question. You humans are by no means expected to have blind faith, for such blind faith is of no value. But you can use your intelligence, you can consider every aspect of what you are required to believe. Serious thought can lead you to an acceptable result, and you can rest assured that such mental effort will be blessed if it is applied to achieve greater insight.... to the knowledge of what is still hidden from you humans but which need not remain hidden from you. To discover the purpose of earthly life as a human being is one such insight, since it belongs to the region of the unprovable, but it can nevertheless be gratifying to a person if he genuinely wants it. Because as soon as he realises that human life is merely the means to an end, increasingly more questions will arise in him. He will try to discover the true purpose and then also become aware of his own task, he will no longer be satisfied with just worrying about earthly life, he will learn to look at everything as determined by purpose.... and then he will find and pursue a spiritual attitude which will completely satisfy him....

The conscious life of a human being only begins when he understands the purpose of earthly life. Because then his thoughts will aim towards a goal which he will try to achieve. Only then will he himself endeavour to start improving his soul; only then earthly activities will move into the background, although he also will be able to master his earthly life with God's help, Who will bless this approach to life and repeatedly make new aspects accessible to him which will make him think and lead him to an ascent. An earthly life in the awareness of purpose can never be lived in vain; it has to result in spiritual success, whereas a person looking at life as an end in itself will not acquire any spiritual advantage. As soon as he is willing to love, questions about the real purpose of life on earth will also arise and then his thinking will change too. However, if he is unwilling to love.... which is usually the case with those who have not yet recognised the purpose of life.... one cannot speak of higher development, the person's soul remains as it was at the beginning of his embodiment, life on earth will have been in vain and then the immense blessing, which could have resulted in the highest reward, will be lost.... But every human being can come to the realisation that he lives on earth for a purpose because every human being has the ability to think, because he can weigh one thought against another and is therefore able to form his own opinion.

And on serious reflection he would definitely come to that insight, because he can recognise a certain purpose of lawful order within the creation of nature which he would also have to apply to himself.... or he would have a very limited capacity of thought, an attitude which could hardly be called intelligent. The human being can come to the realisation that there is a purpose to earthly life or he could not be held responsible for how he has used this earthly life. People who do not want to recognise a purpose of earthly life in fact deny this accountability, but enough evidence in the creation of nature can be found that no natural law, no divine order, can be trespassed without consequences. Thus the human being also has to accept a certain order for himself; he too has to feel part of this law of order. Thus he cannot arbitrarily shape his life without any responsibility towards God, Who created everything, but he has to try to support the law of divine order. He has to acknowledge a Lawgiver, and then he will also feel responsible to this Lawgiver. If this Lawgiver is not acknowledged, then the human being will not feel responsible to a Lord; then he is clearly still subject to a God-opposing power, which always tries to influence a person such that his earthly life will be to no avail, that any belief in a purpose and aim of earthly existence fades away, so that this power can hold on to him again for an infinitely long time....

La vita terrena è scopo a sé stessa oppure mezzo allo scopo

Il cammino sulla Terra come uomo non avrebbe nessuna giusta motivazione se fosse semplicemente scopo a se stesso, oppure anche, sarebbe difficile per voi uomini trovare per questo una giusta motivazione perché vedete troppo chiaramente la grande diversità dei destini umani. E vi sorgerebbe sempre di nuovo la domanda quale scopo s’intraveda da una vita difficile, piena di sofferenza e misera. Ma potete trovare subito una risposta quando voi considerate la vita non come scopo a se stesso, ma come mezzo allo scopo. Se ogni destino terreno fosse uguale, la vita terrena di ogni uomo sarebbe in armonia, assenza di preoccupazione, gioia e felicità terrena – poco diversa dalla vita dei prossimi – allora potreste cullarvi nella credenza che alla vita terrena non vi è nessuno scopo più profondo che appunto della vita stessa. Ma come voi ci riflettete seriamente non vi accontenterete con una tale spiegazione – cercherete un motivo più profondo e lo troverete anche perché da parte vostra serve soltanto una domanda per farvi arrivare a questa la risposta. E tutti gli uomini dovrebbero porsi questa domanda. Non testimonia certamente di intelligenza o giusta attività d’intelletto, quando un uomo si accontenta di passare la vita soltanto come umore del Creatore, perché ogni uomo che rileva la pretesa di passare come intelligenza, non sciuperebbe certamente il suo tempo e la sua forza di far sorgere delle cose che sono totalmente senza scopo. Ed egli stesso non vorrebbe considerare se stesso come una creatura totalmente inutile che avrebbe soltanto lo scopo di conservare se stesso ma in ciò poter determinare la durata della sua esistenza. La vita terrena è scopo a sè stessa oppure mezzo allo scopo? – Far sorgere questa domanda in sé potrebbe essere molto allettante per chi non è in grado di credere. Non viene certamente preteso da voi uomini di credere ciecamente, perché una tale credenza cieca non ha nessun valore. Ma voi potete usare il vostro intelletto, voi potete riflettere in tutte le direzioni su ciò che vi viene richiesto di credere. Tramite la riflessione potete giungere al risultato che vi sembra accettabile e ne potete essere certi che ogni vostro lavoro di pensiero viene benedetto quando si tratta di riconoscenza più profonda: Del sapere di ciò che è ancora celato a voi uomini, ma che non deve rimanervi celato. Conoscere a fondo lo scopo della vita terrena dell’uomo è una tale conoscenza, perché fa parte del campo del non dimostrabile, ma può comunque rendere felice un uomo appena è seriamente intenzionato a raggiungerla. Perché allora sorgeranno sempre più domande nell’uomo quando si rende conto che la vita come uomo è soltanto il mezzo allo scopo. Cercherà di conoscere a fondo il vero scopo ed ora anche di scoprire il suo compito, non si accontenterà più della sola preoccupazione della vita terrena, imparerà a considerare ogni avvenimento e vicissitudine come condizionati allo scopo, e troverà e seguirà ora anche una disposizione d’animo spirituale che lo soddisfa oltremodo. (23.04.1958) Con la conoscenza dello scopo della vita terrena comincia la vita cosciente dell’uomo, perché soltanto ora il suo pensare si orienterà su una meta che egli cerca di raggiungere. Soltanto ora si dà da fare per eseguire il lavoro sull’anima, ora soltanto viene messa in secondo piano la meta terrena, benché potrà anche venire a capo della sua vita terrena con l’Aiuto di Dio, Che benedice una tale disposizione d’animo verso la vita e gli dischiuderà sempre nuovi aspetti che occupano il suo pensare e lo guidano verso l’alto. Una vita terrena cosciente della meta non può mai essere vissuta inutilmente, deve apportare del successo spirituale, mentre invece un uomo per cui la vita è soltanto scopo a sé stessa, non otterrà nessun guadagno spirituale. Ma appena egli diventa amorevole volontariamente, sorgeranno in lui da se domande sullo scopo della sua vita terrena ed allora avverrà anche un cambiamento del pensare, ma se gli manca la volontà per l’amore, che è quasi sempre il caso di coloro che non hanno ancora riconosciuto lo scopo della vita terrena, allora non si può parlare di uno sviluppo verso l’alto, l’uomo rimane secondo la costituzione della sua anima, così come era all’inizio della sua incarnazione. Allora il percorso terreno viene effettuato del tutto inutilmente, allora ci si è giocato un grande Dono di Grazia che avrebbe potuto apportare il massimo successo. Ma ad ogni uomo è possibile di giungere a questa conoscenza e cioè che passa sulla Terra per uno scopo, perché ogni uomo possiede la facoltà di pensare, perché può valutare un pensiero contro l’altro, cioè egli stesso è capace di giudicare. E con la giusta riflessione giungerebbe certamente a quella conoscenza perché egli può riconoscere anche nella Creazione della natura un certo scopo nell’Ordine di Legge, che dovrebbe impiegare anche su se stesso, quale Opera di Creazione altamente sviluppata, altrimenti gli sarebbe proprio un pensare molto limitato, un concetto che non è da indicare come l’intelligenza. L’uomo può conquistare una conoscenza di uno scopo della vita terrena altrimenti non potrebbe essere preteso da lui una responsabilità di come ha utilizzato questa vita terrena. Dagli uomini che non vogliono riconoscere nessuno scopo, viene però negata una tale responsabilità. Ma anche per questo esistono abbastanza conferme nella Creazione della Natura, che non possono venire infrante le Leggi della natura senza conseguenze, contro l’Ordine divino e perciò l’uomo deve anche fare valere per sé stesso un certo Ordine, egli stesso deve sentirsi integrato in quella Legge dell’Ordine che ha fatto sorgere tutto, ma deve cercare di adattarsi alla Legge dell’Ordine divino. Egli deve riconoscere un Legislatore, allora si sentirà anche responsabile coscientemente verso questo Legislatore. Se questo Legislatore non viene riconosciuto, allora l’uomo si sente libero da responsabilità verso un Signore, allora si trova evidentemente ancora nel potere avverso a Dio, perché questo cercherà sempre di influenzare l’uomo in modo che svanisca ogni fede nello scopo e nella meta dell’esistenza della vita terrena – in modo che quel potere possa trattenerlo per sé di nuovo per dei tempi eterni.
