Dulling the inner voice by rejecting the spirit....

You should not resist the spirit if it wants to express itself.... and it wants to speak if you are inwardly urged to entertain spiritual thoughts, if your thoughts keep occupying themselves with that which does not concern your body but the soul.... if you have to think of death, of a continuation of life after death, of God, of your responsibility towards Him, of your own shortcomings, of mistakes and weaknesses, which you yourselves experience as such and which cause you to feel inwardly dissatisfied and anxious. All these are expressions of the spirit in you which would like its voice to be heard, which demands your attention regarding all these things, as they alone are of importance for eternity.... All these thoughts don't deal with the earthly world but point to the spiritual kingdom, and these thoughts ought to be heeded, for they don't arise in the human being for no reason. They are gentle admonitions and warnings, it is the inner voice which is just not recognised by a person as a voice and which tells him the same, that the person should take stock of himself and not live indifferently, that he should not merely live an earthly life because he thereby causes indescribable damage to his soul. The admonisher within the person will not keep silent but very often will be ignored, for the voice from outside is louder and drowns out the inner voice if a person is too worldly minded. Then he will become insensitive to the subtle voice which sounds in him, he will only have eyes and ears for the world and be in great danger of entirely losing the ability to hear this voice.... thereby losing all faith and no longer being capable of contemplating spiritual thoughts.

Every person, even a worldly person in the midst of life, has moments of calm when he can take stock of himself if he wants.... Every person will occasionally be drawn into conversations pertaining to spiritual problems; in every person the spirit, which is part of God, tries to express itself.... For God touches all people, and He does so time and time again, because He wants to divert them from purely earthly matters towards spiritual ones. Yet anyone who resists the spirit, who pushes all thoughts away, who remains unreceptive to all inward instructions, prevents the working of the inner spirit at his own peril. For he loses all contact with the Divine, he himself destroys the bridge.... he remains on earth and will never be able to enter spiritual spheres even when his earthly life has ended.... For his soul is so materialistically inclined that it will be unable to leave the earthly sphere.... it is hardened just like matter, which occupied its sole thoughts and intentions in earthly life.... And for this soul the path will be an infinitely long one before it reaches the sphere of the spirit.... for it is considerably more arduous to travel than on earth....

Het ongevoelig worden voor de innerlijke stem door het weren van de Geest

De Geest in u mag u niet weren, wanneer hij zich wil uiten. En hij wil zich uiten als u innerlijk wordt aangespoord tot geestelijk denken, zodra uw gedachten zich weer met datgene bezighouden wat niet uw lichaam, maar uw ziel betreft. Zodra u zult moeten denken aan de dood, aan een voortleven na de dood, aan God, aan een verantwoording voor Hem, aan uw eigen onvolmaaktheid, aan fouten en zwakheden die u zelf als zodanig opvat en die u innerlijk ontevreden en angstig maken. Dit zijn allemaal uitingen van de Geest in u, die zich graag verstaanbaar wil maken, die uw opmerkzaamheid vraagt tegenover al deze zaken die alleen belangrijk zijn voor de eeuwigheid.

Dit zijn allemaal gedachten die zich niet met de aardse wereld bezighouden. Integendeel, ze maken u attent op het geestelijke rijk. En op zulke gedachten moet acht worden geslagen, want ze duiken niet voor niets in de mens op. Het zijn stille aanmaningen en waarschuwingen. Het is de innerlijke stem - die de mens alleen niet als stem herkenbaar is - die hem hetzelfde zegt, dat de mens zich moet bezinnen en niet onverschillig moet voortleven. Dat hij niet alleen een aards leven moet leiden, omdat hij daardoor zijn ziel onnoemelijke schade toebrengt.

De maner in de mens zwijgt niet, maar wordt heel vaak niet gehoord. Want de stem van buitenaf is luider en overstemt de innerlijke stem, wanneer het denken van de mens te zeer op de wereld is gericht. Dan wordt hij ongevoelig voor de fijne stem die in hem weerklinkt. Hij opent zijn ogen en oren alleen nog voor de wereld. En dan is hij in groot gevaar, dat hij het vermogen die stem te horen helemaal verliest, dat hij elk geloof verliest en niet meer in staat is geestelijk te denken.

Ieder mens, ook de wereldse mens die midden in het leven staat, heeft stille ogenblikken, waarin hij zich op zichzelf kan bezinnen wanneer hij het wil. Ieder mens wordt soms bij gesprekken betrokken, die geestelijke problemen aanroeren. In ieder mens tracht de Geest die een deeltje is van God, zich te uiten. Want God raakt alle mensen even aan. En dat steeds weer, omdat Hij ze graag van het zuiver aardse af wil brengen en op het geestelijke wil richten.

Maar wie de Geest in zich weert, wie alle gedachten die indruk op hem maken opzij drukt, wie zich afsluit voor elke onderrichting van binnen uit, die hindert de Geest in zich werkzaam te zijn, in zijn eigen nadeel. Want hij verliest elke binding met het goddelijke. Hij breekt zelf alle bruggen af. Hij blijft op aarde en zal nooit geestelijke sferen kunnen betreden, zelfs niet wanneer zijn aardse leven is beëindigd. Want zijn ziel is zo materieel ingesteld, dat ze de aardse sfeer niet kan verlaten. Ze is verhard, net als de materie die in het leven op aarde haar denken en streven beheerste. En voor deze ziel is de weg oneindig ver, voordat ze in de sfeer van het geestelijke kan komen. Want hij is veel moeilijker te gaan dan op aarde.
