Unification of the soul and the body with the spirit....

What you are able to hear through the inner voice is significant for soul and body and should therefore be heeded by both, i.e. the soul, the human being's thinking, feeling and wanting, should be stimulated by it and the body should also be determined to comply with what the soul now thinks, feels and wants. Despite the soul's idea, the body can still resist; even though the human being is inwardly convinced that he has to act differently, he can still do what is beneficial for the body but harmful for the soul, then the recognition of what is right is certainly present but the will is too weak to turn it into action. The will belongs to the soul, but the will is decisive for the actions of the body. If the will is now strong enough then it determines the body to actions which are beneficial for the soul, then the soul pulls the body into the spiritual kingdom, so to speak, it is no longer materially minded, i.e., earthly desires no longer have the upper hand, although the human being still lives on earth and again and again has to fight the battle with it. Yet the spirit in the human being pulls the soul mightily, and once it has succeeded by virtue of its will in restraining the body from its striving for the world, once it has succeeded in weakening bodily desire and making it inclined towards the soul, then the body will always distance itself more and more from the earthly, i.e. it will certainly still dwell in the old environment but its desire will only have become weaker and finally only apply to what the soul imparts to it. The body, too, will find satisfaction in dwelling in the spiritual kingdom, and the unification of the soul and the body with the spirit can now take place much more easily than before, when the soul still had to struggle with the body, i.e. when its will was still too weak to resist the comforts of the world and the striving for earthly good was predominant. Yet this battle has to go ahead, otherwise the spirit in the human being will not be able to make itself heard, otherwise the human being will not be able to hear the subtle voice of the spirit either.... And therefore the urgent admonition constantly goes out to you humans: Disregard the worldly as much as possible, draw from the source of life, let the spirit within you speak, which is able to give you far more than the world can offer you in pleasures and enjoyments. Direct all your thoughts, feelings and intentions towards the spiritual kingdom as often as you are able to do so, also carry out earthly activities with your eyes directed upwards, let your thoughts often wander upwards, call upon God and commend yourselves to His love and grace.... And your striving will become increasingly more spiritual, earthly things will only touch you as far as it is absolutely necessary for the preservation of the body, and your soul will mature in knowledge, it will become full of light in you and a heavenly peace will enter your heart, for you have overcome the world....

Het tot overeenstemming komen van de ziel en het lichaam met de geest

Wat u in staat bent te horen door middel van de innerlijke stem, is belangrijk voor ziel en lichaam en moet dus door beide in acht worden genomen. Dat wil zeggen: de ziel - het denken, voelen en willen van de mens - moet daardoor worden aangespoord en ook het lichaam moet worden overgehaald, gevolg te geven aan datgene wat de ziel nu denkt, voelt en wil. Het lichaam kan ondanks wat de ziel voorstelt toch weerstand bieden. De mens kan, ofschoon hij innerlijk ervan overtuigd is anders te moeten handelen, toch uitvoeren wat weliswaar bevorderlijk is voor het lichaam, maar schadelijk voor de ziel. Dan is het inzien van het juiste wel voorhanden, maar de wil te zwak om het in daden om te zetten. De wil hoort weliswaar bij de ziel, maar de wil is doorslaggevend voor het doen van het lichaam.

Is de wil nu sterk genoeg, dan brengt hij het lichaam ertoe handelingen te verrichten die bevorderlijk zijn voor de ziel. Dan trekt de ziel in zekere zin het lichaam mee in het geestelijke rijk. Ze is niet meer materieel gezind, dat wil zeggen: aardse begeerten hebben niet meer het overwicht, ofschoon de mens nog op aarde leeft en steeds weer de strijd ermee heeft te doorstaan.

Maar de geest in de mens trekt de ziel geweldig aan. En is het haar eenmaal gelukt krachtens haar wil het lichaam af te houden van zijn streven naar de wereld, is het haar eenmaal gelukt lichamelijk verlangen af te zwakken en de ziel goedgunstig te stemmen, dan verwijdert het lichaam zich steeds meer van het aardse. Dat wil zeggen: het vertoeft nog wel in de oude omgeving, doch zijn begeren is alleen maar zwakker geworden en zal tenslotte alleen nog uitgaan naar datgene wat de ziel het overbrengt.

Ook het lichaam zal zijn voldoening vinden in het vertoeven in het geestelijke rijk. En het tot overeenstemming komen van de ziel en het lichaam met de geest kan nu veel gemakkelijker plaatsvinden dan voorheen, waar de ziel nog met het lichaam moest worstelen, dat wil zeggen: waar haar wil nog te zwak was om weerstand te bieden aan de genoegens van de wereld en het streven naar aards goed de overhand hand. Maar deze strijd moet voorafgaan, daar anders de geest in de mens zich geen gehoor kan verschaffen, daar anders de mens ook niet in staat is de fijne stem van de geest te horen.

En daarom komt u mensen voortdurend de dringende aanmaning toe: sla op het wereldse zo weinig mogelijk acht, put uit de Bron van het leven, laat de geest in u spreken die u heel wat meer kan geven dan de wereld u aan vreugden en genoegens geven kan. Richt al uw denken, voelen en willen op het geestelijke rijk, zo vaak als u hiertoe in staat bent. Verricht ook de aardse werkzaamheden met een naar boven gerichte blik. Laat uw gedachten vaak omhoog zweven. Roep God aan en beveel u aan in Zijn liefde en genade. En uw streven zal steeds geestelijker worden. Het aardse zal alleen nog in zoverre indruk op u maken als het voor de instandhouding van het lichaam beslist noodzakelijk is. En uw ziel zal rijp worden aan inzicht. In u zal het licht worden en een hemelse rust zal uw hart binnentrekken, want u hebt de wereld overwonnen.
