Correctly used mental activity.... Will....

Making correct use of the gift of intelligence is absolutely essential for the soul's higher development, since the human being was given intellect so that he can mentally process everything that exists and happens around him and thereby reach conclusions which consciously make him seek the eternally Divine. By using the intellect, free will becomes active in him, for a person will only want something if his intellect has portrayed the benefit of this volition to him, thus the will is always the result of thinking.... And the correct use of intellect, i.e., to want what is good and to detest evil, must inevitably advance the soul's maturity. One cannot speak of correct use of intellect if the latter impels someone to behave badly; in that case the gifts of intellect are being misused. With serious and sensible deliberation, a person can easily recognise the activity of a wise creative Power which brought everything surrounding him into existence and that this creative Power continues to care for its creations. Once a person has come this far then the intellect will be able to persuade the will into making contact with this creative Power, for he has to regard himself as an independently thinking being, thus as His living creation, subsequently he also has to acknowledge the Creator as an equally thinking Being of supreme perfection, and this awareness is enough to establish a connection with the Creator.

Every human being can arrive at this conclusion if he uses his intellect in order to come closer to the truth. The fact that his mental activity will be correctly guided afterwards is this Creator's working as soon as the person has consciously established a connection with Him. However, the human being was given intellect in order to use it until the moment of contact, thus it was added to free will in order to enable the latter's move in the right direction which leads to the goal, to contact with God. The only condition is that a person must want what is good of his own volition, then his reasoning will invariably lead him to the goal. Thus the intellect has to be used for activating the will to consciously establish a connection with God, yet prior to that this will must have made a decision in favour of God, otherwise the mental activity will have been used incorrectly by refraining from all serious deliberation and merely assessing the advantages and disadvantages of his surroundings and what takes place therein. In that case, he will not be making full use of the gift of reasoning and the result will be accordingly.... he will never reach the goal, instead he will always doubt or be mistaken, for he is influenced by good or evil forces according to his will. With earnest use, the mind can even change an ill-will, and this is indeed its task. For this reason the human being has to justify himself if he misuses the gift of intelligence, if he fails to use it for its actual purpose.... to come closer to the truth, which God does not withhold from anyone who seriously strives for it through earnest mental activity. With the right determination he will be extremely successful and after serious deliberation, he will also influence his determination to aim towards the same goal....

Juist gebruikte denkarbeid - De wil

De gave het verstand goed te gebruiken is onvoorwaardelijk nodig voor de hogere ontwikkeling van de ziel. Want daarvoor kreeg de mens het verstand, opdat hij alles wat om hem is en geschiedt, met zijn gedachten verwerkt - en hij daardoor gevolgtrekkingen maakt, die hem nu bewust in zichzelf het eeuwig goddelijke laten zoeken. Door het verstand moet de vrije wil werkzaam worden, want iets willen zal de mens pas dan, als zijn verstand hem het nut van wat hij wil voor ogen heeft gesteld, zodoende zal het willen altijd pas het gevolg van het denken zijn.

En het verstand nu juist te gebruiken, d.w.z. het goede te willen en het kwade te verafschuwen, moet onherroepelijk de ontwikkeling van de ziel bevorderen. Er kan van een goed gebruik maken van het verstand niet gesproken worden als het de mens aanzet tot slecht handelen, dan worden de gaven van het verstand misbruikt. De mens kan door na te denken en zijn verstand serieus te gebruiken erg makkelijk inzien dat een wijze Scheppingskracht aan het werk is, Die alles om hem heen liet ontstaan - en dat deze Scheppingskracht ook verder alle schepselen verzorgt. En is de mens eenmaal zo ver gekomen, dan kan het verstand ook de wil ertoe brengen zich met deze Scheppingskracht in verbinding te stellen. Want hij moet zichzelf als een zelfstandig denkend wezen, dus als Zijn schepsel bezien en derhalve de Schepper evenzo als denkend WEZEN, in hoogste volmaaktheid erkennen, en dit bewustzijn is voldoende om nu een verbinding met de Schepper tot stand te brengen.

Dit is een resultaat van het denken, dat ieder mens bereiken kan als hij zijn verstand gebruikt om dichter bij de waarheid te komen. Dat desondanks zijn denkarbeid juist geleid wordt, is het werk van deze Schepper, zodra de mens bewust de verbinding met Hem tot stand heeft gebracht. Doch het verstand is de mens daartoe gegeven om tot aan het ogenblik van het zich verbinden, zelf werkzaam te zijn. Het verstand is dus aan de wil toegevoegd, opdat deze de juiste richting kan nemem die tot het doel, tot de verbinding met GOD voert.

De voorwaarde is alleen, dat de mens innerlijk het goede wil, dan zal zijn denkarbeid hem onherroepelijk tot het doel voeren. Het verstand moet dus gebruikt worden opdat de wil actief wordt, om bewust de verbinding met GOD tot stand te brengen. Maar eerst moet deze wil voor GOD gekozen hebben, daar anders de denkaktiviteit zich niet goed ten nutte wordt gemaakt doordat de mens al het ernstig nadenken achterwege laat en alleen verstandelijk de voor en nadelen overweegt van dat wat hem omgeeft en wat er geschiedt. Hij benut dan de gave van het denken niet en ook het resultaat is daarmee in overeenstemming. Hij zal nooit tot het doel komen maar gedurig twijfelen of dwalen, want al naar gelang zijn wil wordt hij beïnvloed door goede of boze krachten.

Het verstand kan als het serieus gebruikt wordt zelfs een slechte wil tot een andere mening brengen, en dat is ook zijn opdracht. Daarom moet de mens zich ook verantwoorden als hij de gave van het verstand misbruikt, wanneer hij die gave niet gebruikt voor het eigenlijke doel, nml.dichter bij de waarheid te komen, die GOD degene niet onthoudt die er ernstig naar streeft - door ijverige denkarbeid. Met de goede wil zal hij het grootste resultaat boeken en met ernstig nadenken zal hij ook zijn wil overreden hetzelfde doel na te streven.
