Transformation of the external shape after physical death.... Being spiritually dead.... Activity - Inactivity....

The human being requires vital energy for every activity, thus activity signifies life. If this strength is withdrawn from him he will be incapable of reshaping himself or other things.... he will be lifeless. But as soon as the human being has become lifeless, the external shape will nevertheless change within itself. It will dissolve, and this process will last until all substances are taken in by a new external shape again, i.e. once the spiritual substance has escaped the form, the remaining form will certainly be released from its previous purpose, nevertheless, it must find a new purpose.... it must contribute towards increasing some other external shape. The substance dissolves in order to be joined to a new external shape. This process once again requires a longer period of time.... Hence the old shape seemingly dissolves; in reality, however, the spiritual substances which the external shape also consists of enter into contact with other spiritual substances and form a new external shape because the spiritual substance, which had solidified into an external shape, must likewise undertake the path of higher development on earth, for it is still at the beginning of its development. As soon as spiritual substances are placed into this new external shape again, it will begin its function of service, thus the shape will awaken to life.... for activity is life. Each work of creation receives the flow of strength from God so that it can actively be of service, no matter in what way, and every activity results in higher development for the spiritual substance in the form. Consequently that which is alive.... thus active.... must advance in its development without fail. Only the state of death signifies a standstill of its development. But all matter shelters life within itself, for it constantly changes, albeit over various lengths of time. Even the hardest form, through external influences relating to light radiation.... thus the activity of the bearers of light.... will be stimulated to be active, although this is not noticeable to the human eye. But life also stirs in this shape and accomplishes changes which therefore confirm its life. Matter can therefore not be called entirely dead, although for the human being it appears to be lifeless. And yet, a state of lifelessness exists and this occurs in the stage as a human being.... In this stage the being receives the greatest flow of vital energy which it should use for actively being of service. And despite of this it is possible for the human being to spend his life on earth in complete idleness.... as soon as he does not use the vital energy in order to fulfil the task which is the purpose of his earthly life.... if he neglects or refrains from doing what will gain him higher development.... if he avoids accomplishing acts of love.... the pursuance of activity for which God provides the human being with the flow of vital energy.... Then his higher development will come to a standstill. This signifies a state of lifelessness, of death, and this is the worst state because it can only be remedied by the being itself.... but since the state of death is a state of weakness, the being will no longer be able to release itself from it because it rejected the strength it had previously received.... Death of the external shape merely signifies a transformation into a new form, thus, in a manner of speaking, a further possibility for higher development of the spiritual substance which the external shape consists of. But to be spiritually dead is the most horrific state, because the final grace which is at the being's disposal has been left unused.... because the flow of vitality God conveyed to this being has not been used for helpful activity and the being remains on the same level of development it was in at the beginning of its embodiment as a human being. Spiritual progress without activity is impossible; the being becomes weak as a result of its inactivity and enters the beyond without strength....

Omvorming van de uiterlijke vorm na de lichamelijke dood - Geestelijk dood zijn - Activiteit - Niets doen

De mens heeft levenskracht nodig om elk werk uit te voeren, dus betekent bezig zijn ook leven. Wordt hem deze kracht ontnomen, dan is hij niet in staat zichzelf of andere zaken te veranderen - hij is levenloos. Maar toch verandert de uiterlijke vorm als zodanig, zodra de mens levenloos is geworden. Hij valt uiteen en dit proces duurt zo lang tot elke substantie weer in een nieuwe uiterlijke vorm is opgenomen. Dat wil zeggen: is het geestelijke uit de vorm ontsnapt, dan wordt de achterblijvende vorm wel van zijn vroegere bestemming ontheven, maar moet deze een nieuwe bestemming vervullen. Hij moet bijdragen tot aanwas van een of andere nieuwe vorm. De substantie valt uiteen om bij een nieuwe uiterlijke vorm gevoegd te worden. Deze ontwikkelingsgang vergt weer veel tijd.

De oude vorm lost dus schijnbaar op. Maar in werkelijkheid treden de geestelijke substanties, waar ook de aardse uiterlijke vorm uit bestaat, met andere geestelijke substanties in verbinding en vormen een nieuwe uiterlijke vorm, omdat het geestelijke dat verdicht is tot uiterlijke vorm, eveneens de positieve ontwikkelingsgang op aarde moet doormaken, want het staat nog aan het begin van zijn ontwikkeling. Zodra nu weer iets geestelijks deze nieuwe uiterlijke vorm tot zijn verblijfplaats krijgt toegewezen, begint diens dienende werkzaamheid. Dus de vorm wordt tot leven gewekt, want bezig zijn is leven. Naar elk scheppingswerk stroomt van God uit de kracht toe, zodat het dienend werkzaam kan zijn, ongeacht de manier waarop. En elke activiteit levert het geestelijke in de vorm de positieve ontwikkeling op. Bijgevolg moet dat wat leeft, dus werkzaam is, onvermijdelijk voortgaan in de ontwikkeling. Alleen de dode toestand betekent een stilstand in zijn ontwikkeling. Maar elke materie heeft leven in zich, want ze verandert, alleen in verschillend lange tijdsduur. Zelfs de meest vaste vorm wordt door invloed van buiten, die met de lichtstraling - dus het werkzaam zijn van de lichtdragers - samenhangt, tot werkzaamheid aangespoord, ofschoon dit voor het menselijk oog niet zichtbaar is. Maar het leven is ook in deze vorm in beweging en brengt veranderingen tot stand die dus een leven ervan bevestigt. Volledig dood kan de materie daarom niet worden genoemd, ofschoon ze de mens levenloos voorkomt. En toch bestaat er een toestand van levenloosheid, en wel in het stadium als mens.

In dit stadium stroomt het wezen de grootste mate aan levenskracht toe, die het tot dienende werkzaamheid moet gebruiken. En toch kan de mens totaal ineffectief door het leven gaan, zodra hij de hem toekomende levenskracht niet benut om de taak te vervullen die de zin van zijn aardse bestaan is, wanneer hij datgene verzuimt of nalaat, wat hem de positieve ontwikkeling oplevert.

Wanneer hij het werkzaam zijn in liefde niet in acht neemt, de werkzaamheid waarvoor God de mensen de levenskracht doet toekomen.

Dan treedt er een stilstand op in zijn opwaartse ontwikkeling. Dit betekent een toestand van levenloosheid, van dood, en dit is het ergste, omdat deze toestand alleen door het wezen zelf kan worden opgeheven. Maar de dode toestand is een toestand van krachteloosheid, waaruit het wezen zichzelf dus niet meer kan bevrijden, omdat het dat tevoren, toen de kracht hem toekwam, niet wilde.

Voor de uiterlijke vorm betekent de dood alleen een omvorming tot een andere vorm, dus als het ware een verdere mogelijkheid voor de positieve ontwikkeling van de geestelijke substantie waaruit de uiterlijke vorm is gevormd. Maar geestelijk dood te zijn is allerverschrikkelijkst, omdat de laatste genade die het wezen ter beschikking staat, ongebruikt wordt gelaten, omdat de levensstroom die God dit wezen toevoert, niet wordt gebruikt voor dienende werkzaamheid en het wezen blijft steken op het zelfde ontwikkelingsniveau, waarop het stond aan het begin van zijn belichaming als mens. Geestelijke vooruitgang is zonder werkzaamheid niet mogelijk. Het wezen is door zijn passief zijn krachteloos geworden en gaat zonder kracht het hiernamaals binnen.
