Earthly light and spiritual light....

All beingness pushes towards the light and flees the darkness as soon as it has once felt the favour of the light. And since the final purpose of all creation is to redeem the spiritual substance from darkness, the benefit of light must first be shown to it so that it will now strive towards the light of its own accord. It has to be permeated by light, and this is the task of the light-giving celestial bodies which God let come into being for this purpose and which always and forever send their light into the universe for the revitalization of all that which holds beingness within itself. These givers of light now fulfil their task.... they penetrate every work of creation with their rays of light and there is nothing where the rays do not find their way. Even the seemingly impenetrable solid form feels this irradiation beneficially and thereby awakens to life, i.e. it becomes active within itself, even if it is not visible to the human eye, for the rays of light cause life to stir everywhere and nothing remains unchanged through the activity of that which awakens to life. What is active develops a force, and where a force expresses itself, something new arises.... So the rays of light contribute to the multiplication of what is.... And this is the development of all beingness, that it constantly changes its outer shell, that is, it always gives life to new forms, and this is brought about by the radiation of light. The celestial bodies, which send light into the universe, thus contribute to the redemption of the beingness, for they loosen the outer form at every stage, they bring about the dissolution of the solid form, even if it lasts for inconceivable times, they revitalize the plant kingdom, which awakens to life in a particularly obvious way through the light radiation, i.e. is in a state of constant change. They are also felt to be unusually beneficial by the beings that undergo earthly change in animal life.... And finally, they are indispensable for the being in the last stage, for the human being, who is unable to live without light.... Light is always channelled to the beingness that is still languishing in darkness, and it always instinctively pushes towards the light, for the beingness only feels comfortable in the light. In the human stage, however, in addition to the light necessary for life, the beingness can also feel the benefit of spiritual light and likewise strive for it.... Yet the latter is up to him, for this is decided by his free will as to whether he desires the influx of light from the spiritual kingdom....

(25.10.1941) The being in the stage of free will will likewise strive for the light which continues to flow to it for the preservation of its physical life. For it also needs the light for earthly activity. As soon as the being's surroundings are light and bright, it is also willing to be active. The being constantly fights against the darkness by trying to break through it through its own production of light as soon as the influx of light is lawfully interrupted. And this is also within the range of earthly ability. The light that the human being needs earthly can also be produced earthly where it is lacking. And he will utilize this ability as far as possible, for the human being desires light as long as he carries out an activity which he does not need to hide from the world. Yet he does not need the light from the spiritual kingdom for his earthly activity, and therefore not every person endeavours to enter the circle of emanation of this light but this only depends on the strength of the desire to come closer to God. Spiritual light will flow to that person who opens himself to receive it. Spiritual light certainly flows to every person but only penetrates him if he wants to let it penetrate. For spiritual light is knowledge of the truth, which is certainly accessible to every human being but is not desired by every human being. People do not need this light to carry out earthly activities, consequently only those people pay attention to it who recognize God as the eternal light and want to come close to this light. These strive for the truth, they are hungry for knowledge and open their hearts to every ray of light which is imparted to them from the spiritual kingdom in the form of knowledge. For to them, ignorance is a state like the darkest night, which they seek to break through and into which they want to bring light. They want to banish the darkness, they want the light to penetrate everywhere where a shadow of ignorance can still be recognized. And this desire for the light also makes the darkness flee, for where there is desire, the light flows in unstoppably. There the gates are open so that the light can penetrate unhindered. And light will always triumph over darkness, but in the stage of free will the human being himself has to decide whether light or darkness accompanies his earthly life. His will alone decides, his striving for the light lets him dwell in the light.... The desire for darkness, however, denies the light access to the human heart, and this will is decisive for eternity.... The abundance of light depends on this will, which one day can make the being in eternity infinitely happy or also lack it, for there will always be bliss where there is light and the lack of light means an agonizing state for the being....

Aards licht en geestelijk licht

Al het wezenlijke dringt het licht tegemoet en ontvlucht de duisternis, zodra het eenmaal de weldaad van het licht ervaren heeft. En omdat het einddoel van elke schepping is om het wezenlijke uit de duisternis te bevrijden, moet de weldaad van het licht hem eerst eens bewezen worden, opdat het nu vanzelf naar het licht streeft. Het moet doorstraald worden door licht en dit is de taak van de lichtgevende hemellichamen, die God voor dit doel liet ontstaan en die eeuwig en altijd hun licht het heelal in sturen ter activering van alles, wat wezenlijks in zich bevat.

Deze lichtgevers vervullen nu hun taak. Ze doordringen met hun lichtstralen elk scheppingswerk en er bestaat niets, waarheen de stralen hun weg niet vinden. Zelfs de op zich ondoordringbaar lijkende vaste vorm ervaart deze bestraling als weldadig en ontwaakt daarom tot leven. Dat wil zeggen dat ze in zichzelf actief wordt, ofschoon ook niet voor menselijke ogen zichtbaar, want de lichtstralen bewerkstelligen, dat overal leven ontstaat en er niets onveranderd blijft door de werkzaamheid van dat, wat tot leven ontwaakt.

Waar iets actief wordt, ontwikkelt zich een kracht en waar een kracht zich uit, ontstaat iets nieuws. Zodoende dragen de lichtstralen bij aan de toename van dat, wat er is. En het is de ontwikkelingsgang van al het wezenlijke, dat het zijn omhulsel voortdurend verandert, dus steeds nieuwe vormen bewoont en de lichtuitstraling brengt dit teweeg.

De hemellichamen, die het licht het heelal in sturen, dragen dus bij aan de verlossing van het wezenlijke, want ze verzachten de uiterlijke vorm in elk stadium. Ze brengen, ofschoon ook gedurende ondenkbare tijden, de ontbinding van de vaste vorm tot stand. Ze brengen het plantenrijk tot leven, dat door de lichtuitstraling heel erg duidelijk tot het leven ontwaakt. Dat wil zeggen aan voortdurende verandering onderhevig is. Ze worden ook als buitengewoon weldadig ervaren door het wezenlijke, dat de gang over de aarde in het dierenleven aflegt. En niet in de laatste plaats zijn ze onontbeerlijk voor het wezen in het laatste stadium. Voor de mens, die zonder licht niet in staat is tot leven.

Steeds wordt het licht naar het wezenlijke geleid, dat nog in de duisternis smacht en steeds dringt het instinctief het licht tegemoet, want het wezenlijke voelt zich alleen in het licht maar goed. Maar in het menselijke stadium kan het wezenlijke buiten het voor het leven noodzakelijke licht ook de weldaad van geestelijke lichttoevoer bespeuren en hier eveneens naar streven. Maar dat laatste staat hem vrij, want zijn vrije wil beslist of hij de toestroom van het licht uit het geestelijke rijk begeert.

Het wezen in het stadium van de vrije wil zal eveneens naar het licht streven, dat hem voor het behoud van zijn lichamelijke leven voortdurend toestroomt. Want het heeft het licht ook voor de aardse activiteiten nodig. Zodra de omgeving licht en helder is, is het ook genegen tot werkzaamheid.

Het wezen strijdt onophoudelijk tegen de duisternis, doordat het deze door eigen lichtopwekking probeert te doorbreken, zodra de wetmatige schenking van het licht onderbroken wordt. En dat ligt ook binnen het bereik van het aardse kunnen. Het licht, dat de mens aards nodig heeft, kan hij ook aards opwekken, waar het hem eraan ontbreekt. En hij zal deze bekwaamheid zo veel mogelijk ten volle benutten, want de mens verlangt naar licht, zolang hij met een activiteit bezig is, die hij niet voor de wereld hoeft te verbergen.

Maar hij heeft voor zijn aardse activiteiten het licht uit het geestelijke rijk niet nodig. En daarom streeft niet ieder mens ernaar om binnen de kring van de uitstraling van dit licht te komen, want dit hangt in de eerste plaats af van de sterkte van het verlangen naar het naderen van God. Geestelijk licht zal naar die mens toestromen, die zichzelf opent om het op te nemen. Geestelijk licht stroomt wel naar elk mens toe, maar het dringt alleen maar bij hem naar binnen als hij het binnen wil laten dringen. Want geestelijk licht is kennis van de waarheid, die wel voor elk mens toegankelijk is, maar niet door elk mens begeerd wordt.

De mensen hebben voor de uitvoering van hun aardse activiteiten dit licht niet nodig. Bijgevolg schenken alleen deze mensen hier aandacht aan, die God als het eeuwige licht herkennen en die in de nabijheid van dit licht willen komen. Deze streven naar de waarheid. Ze hebben honger naar kennis en openen hun harten voor elke lichtstraal, die hun uit het geestelijke rijk in de vorm van kennis gegeven wordt. Want voor hen is de onwetendheid een toestand gelijk aan de donkerste nacht, die ze proberen te doorbreken, waarin ze licht zouden willen brengen. Ze willen de duisternis verdrijven. Ze willen dat het licht overal heen dringt, waar nog een schaduw van onwetendheid te herkennen is. En dit verlangen naar het licht laat de duisternis ook vluchten, want het licht stroomt onophoudelijk naar daar, waar het verlangen ernaar is. Daar zijn de poorten geopend, zodat het licht ongehinderd binnen kan dringen.

En voortdurend zal het licht over de duisternis zegevieren, maar in het stadium van de vrije wil moet de mens zelf bepalen of licht of duisternis zijn gang over de aarde vergezelt. Alleen zijn wil beslist. Zijn streven naar het licht laat hem in het licht vertoeven. Maar het verlangen naar de duisternis belet het licht de toegang tot het menselijke hart en deze wil is bepalend voor de eeuwigheid. De lichtintensiteit hangt van deze wil af, die het wezen eens in de eeuwigheid eindeloos gelukzalig zal maken of het kan hem hier ook aan ontbreken, want steeds zal daar gelukzaligheid zijn, waar er licht is en een gebrek aan licht betekent een kwellende toestand voor het wezen.
