Self-conceit.... self-realization....

This is man's worst enemy, that self-conceit does not leave him, for he is then as it were without self-realization.... He sees himself in a false light and therefore does nothing but exalt it instead of humbly calling himself to account, recognizing his faults and shortcomings and combating them. Every striving for perfection must be preceded by realization, but he who sees himself in the mirror of righteousness and inviolability does not strive upwards but thinks he is already at the top; he also has no desire for higher development because he does not realize his inadequate state of maturity. And he will also rarely accept a hint in this respect since he is aware of his value and is therefore extremely distant from truly recognizing the state of his soul. And so it will be very difficult to make the necessity of striving for perfection clear to a person who is convinced of the value of his personality, for he will always find this appropriate in his fellow human beings but never in himself.... He does not regocnize his own greatest fault and therefore finds it difficult to find the path to knowledge.... he has a certain excessive sense of self that prevents him from humbly entrusting himself to the father in heaven, and so this sense of self is the greatest enemy of his soul.... he does not bow before the father.... and much less does he serve.... And this prevents him from developing his soul higher, for a person cannot achieve anything high if he does not consciously strive for it.... and again he will not strive for something he believes he possesses. Only those who think they are small and weak ask for help.... But the great and strong do not think they need it. And so he comes away empty-handed and ultimately has no ascent to expect, because every height must be striven for. If a person's sense of self is so strongly developed, then the distance from the eternal deity is not quite understandable to him, and he does nothing to reduce this distance.... On the contrary, he still allows the earthly world to have an effect on him so that the distance from God becomes ever more noticeable, for he believes himself to be so knowledgeable that he rejects everything offered to him for the salvation of his soul as superior, always starting from the point of view of his inviolability and his value. He regards himself as exemplary and does not want to accept anyone else, he does not accept any teachings and continues to reject them if a transformation of his nature is demanded of him, for this seems to him to be superior to everything and yet is the greatest obstacle on the path to true realization, for only he who believes himself to be in the deepest depths can attain the heights.... for the latter sincerely asks God for His help, which is lovingly granted to him by the father, whereas the latter does not believe himself to be so needy as to ask for the father's help and therefore cannot ascend without any help....

자만. 자기 인식.

자만이 사람을 떠나지 않는다면, 자만은 인간의 최악의 적이다. 왜냐하면 자만한 사람은 동시에 자신에 대한 깨달음이 없기 때문이다. 그는 자신을 잘못된 시각으로 보고, 겸손하게 자신을 점검하여 자신의 결점과 단점을 깨닫고, 그에 맞서 싸우는 대신, 자신의 결점과 단점을 증가시키는 일 외에는 아무 일도 하지 않는다. 온전하게 되기 위한 모든 노력에 앞서 깨달음이 선행되어야만 한다. 그러나 정의와 불가침의 거울로 자신을 보는 사람은 위로 향하려는 노력을 하지 않고, 자신이 이미 위에 있다고 생각하고, 그는 또한 더 높은 성장을 향한 갈망이 없다. 왜냐하면 그가 자신의 부족한 성장 상태를 의식하지 못하기 때문이다. 그는 또한 희귀하게 이와 관련된 암시를 받아드릴 것이다. 왜냐하면 그는 자신이 가치가 있다고 의식하고 있고, 때문에 자신의 영의 상태에 대한 진실된 깨달음으로부터 아주 멀리 떨어져 있기 때문이다.

그러므로 자신의 인격의 가치를 확신하는 사람에게 온전하게 되기 위한 추구를 해야만 하는 필요성을 선명하게 해주는 일은 아주 어렵게 될 것이다. 왜냐하면 그는 항상 이런 추구가 이웃 사람들에게 적합하다고 생각할 것이고, 그러나 절대로 자신에게 적합하다고 생각하지 않을 것이기 때문이다. 그는 자신의 가장 큰 실수를 깨닫지 못하고, 이로써 깨달음의 길을 찾기가 어렵게 될 것이다. 그는 자신에 대한 과장된 느낌을 가지고 있고, 이것이 겸손하게 자신을 하나님 아버지께 의탁하는 일을 방해한다. 그러므로 이런 자신에 대한 느낌이 그의 혼에게 가장 큰 적이다. 그는 아버지에게 순복하지 않고, 섬기는 일은 더욱 하지 않는다.

이런 일이 그가 그의 혼이 더 높게 성장하는 일을 막는다. 왜냐하면 인간이 의식적으로 높은 곳에 도달하기 위해 노력하지 않으면, 높은 곳에 도달할 수 없기 때문이다. 그는 한편으로 자신이 가지고 있다고 생각하는 것을 얻기 위해 노력하지 않을 것이다. 단지 자신이 작고 연약하다고 생각하는 사람이 도움을 청한다. 그러나 크고 강한 사람은 도움이 필요하다고 생각하지 않는다. 그러므로 그는 빈손으로 되고, 결국에는 어떤 성장도 이루지 못한다. 왜냐하면 모든 높은 곳은 추구해서 얻어야만 하기 때문이다.

사람의 자만이 그렇게 강하게 발달하게 되면, 그는 영원한 신성과의 간격을 올바르게 이해할 수 없다. 그는 그의 편에서 이 거리를 줄이기 위해 아무 일도 하지 않는다. 그는 반대로 이 땅의 세상이 그에게 영향을 미치도록 허용하여, 하나님과의 거리가 점점 더 분명하게 나타나게 한다. 왜냐하면 그는 자신이 지식을 가지고 있다고 믿고, 항상 자신의 불가침과 자신이 가치가 있다는 관점에서, 그의 혼의 구원을 위해 그에게 제공된 모든 것을 우월감으로 거부하기 때문이다.

그는 자신을 모범적이라고 생각하고, 다른 사람을 인정하기를 원하지 않는다. 그는 어떤 가르침도 받아들이지 않고, 그가 그의 존재를 변화시키도록 요구받을 때 이전과 같이 거부한다. 왜냐하면 그의 관점이 그가 모든 것을 능가한다고 생각하게 만들기 때문이다. 그러나 그런 관점은 올바른 깨달음에 도달하기 위한 길에 가장 큰 방해물이다. 왜냐하면 단지 자신이 가장 깊은 곳에 있다고 믿는 사람이 높은 곳에 도달할 수 있고, 그는 아버지께 긴밀하게 도움을 구하기 때문이다. 아버지는 사랑이 충만하게 그에게 도움을 줄 것이다. 반면에 자신에게 아버지께 도움을 구할 필요가 없다고 믿는 사람은 또한 아무런 도움을 받지 못하는 가운데 높은 곳에 도달할 수 없다.
