Het worstelen van de geest met het lichaam om de opperheerschappij over de ziel

Elk wezen snakt naar bevrijding, want de onrijpe toestand is een kwelling voor al het geestelijke. Maar in de belichaming als mens voelt het geestelijke wel zijn onvrijheid, maar het lichaam en de ziel niet. De ziel is in het begin eveneens zonder besef van haar toestand en bijgevolg schenkt ze alleen maar gehoor aan de verlangens van het lichaam. Maar het lichaam voelt zich vrij en wel des te vrijer, naarmate hij meer met de wereld rekening kan houden, dat wil zeggen de aardse vreugden, en daarom legt hij het lichaam nauwelijks belemmeringen op. Dus geeft de ziel gevolg aan de aandrang van het lichaam en wordt er geen acht geslagen op de geest.

En zo moet het geestelijke in de mens de geketende toestand verdragen tot hem van de zijde van de ziel hulp geboden wordt. Want enkel de ziel kan hem helpen, doordat ze meer aan de geest in zich denkt, dan aan het lichaam. En daarom is juist het aardse bestaan, ofschoon het de geest bevrijding moet brengen, het grootste gevaar voor de ziel, zolang ze zich nog niet vrij gemaakt heeft van de begeerten van het lichaam. Bijgevolg strijdt het lichaam met de geest om de opperheerschappij over de ziel. En dit is het strijden van het licht met de duisternis. De wezens van het licht strijden met de machten van de duisternis om de ziel. Om het geestelijke, dat zich van God verwijderd heeft en zich er nog niet geheel van bewust is, dat het bij het eeuwige licht, de Godheid, behoort.

Zodra de ziel de kennis verworven heeft, zal ze zich vrijwillig naar God keren. Maar de duistere machten verhinderen met alle middelen, dat de ziel tot kennis komt. En het lichaam zal de grootste hindernis zijn om de ziel zich naar de geest te laten keren. Zolang het lichaam nog op de voorgrond geplaatst wordt, zijn er voor de ziel weinig mogelijkheden om tot kennis te komen, zodat ze inzicht in haar toestand, dat wil zeggen haar verwijderd zijn van God, krijgt.

Pas wanneer ze geen aandacht meer schenkt aan de eisen van het lichaam, begint ze na te denken over het eigenlijke doel van het aardse leven. Pas dan verliest de tegenstander aan macht. De duistere krachten hebben niet zoveel invloed meer op de ziel. Ze keert zich van het lichaam af en naar de geest in zich toe en als deze verbinding tot stand gebracht is, wordt het licht en helder in haar. Zodoende heeft de geest in haar overwonnen en de heerschappij over de ziel gewonnen, die zich nu geheel met de geest verenigt en nu is de bevrijding van het wezen hier een onvermijdelijk gevolg van.

Maar de strijd is onnoemelijk zwaar en het vereist de volle inzet van zowel alle goede krachten alsook de wil van de mens, want alleen die leidt tot de beslissing van de ziel. Alleen de wil van de mens is doorslaggevend voor waarheen de ziel zich wendt. De wil kan de voorkeur geven aan het lichaam, maar ook aan de geest. Maar alleen het laatste zal voor het wezen de definitieve bevrijding uit de vorm zijn.

Struggle of the spirit with the body for supremacy over the soul....

Every being longs to become free because the unfree state is agonizing for all spiritual beings. But in the embodiment as a human being the spiritual certainly feels its lack of freedom, but not the body and the soul. The soul is likewise initially without realization of its situation and consequently only listens to the body's desires. The body, however, feels free, and indeed the freer the more it can take the world, i.e. earthly pleasures, into account and therefore hardly imposes any restraints on the body. Thus the soul yields to the body's urging and the spirit remains unheeded. And so the spiritual in man must endure the banished state until help comes from the soul. For only the soul can help it by thinking more of the spirit within itself than of the body. And that is why being on earth, although it is supposed to bring liberation to the spirit, is the greatest danger for the soul as long as it has not yet freed itself from the desires of the body. Consequently, the body fights with the spirit for supremacy over the soul.... And this is the struggle of light with darkness.... The beings of light wrestle with the powers of darkness for the soul.... for the spiritual that has distanced itself from God and is not yet fully aware of it that it belongs to the eternal light.... to the deity.... Provided the soul has attained realization, it will voluntarily turn to God. The dark forces, however, prevent the soul from attaining realization by all means. And the body will be the greatest obstacle for the soul to turn to the spirit. As long as the body is still placed in the foreground there is little possibility for the soul to become aware that it comes to the realization of its situation.... i.e. its distance from God.... Only when it no longer pays attention to the demands of the body does it begin to think about the actual purpose of life on earth. Only then does the adversary lose power; the dark forces no longer have so much influence on the soul.... It turns away from the body and towards the spirit within, and once this bond is established, it becomes bright and clear within.... Thus the spirit within it has triumphed and gained dominion over the soul, which is now completely united with the spirit and the inevitable consequence of this is the liberation of the being. Yet the battle is unspeakably difficult and requires the full commitment of all good forces as well as the human will, which alone brings about the soul's decision. The will of the human being alone is decisive as to where the soul turns.... the will can decide in favour of the body, but also in favour of the spirit, but only the latter will bring the being final liberation from the form....
