전통적인 믿음. 형식적인 믿음. 잘못된 가르침.

전통적인 믿음에서, 형식적인 믿음에서 생명력 있는 믿음으로 사람들을 인도하는 일은 매우 힘든 일이다. 왜냐면 그들이 믿음이라는 단어에 관해서 선명하게 알지 못하기 때문이다. 사람들은 이 단어의, 이 말의 실제 깊은 의미를 의식하지 못하고 전통적으로 받아드린다. 그들은 그리스도의 가르침이 말하는 것 보다 외적인 전통이나 형식에 더욱 매달리고, 하나님의 구세주 예수 그리스도에 관련된 모든 것을 귀로 영접했지만, 이런 지식을 그냥 "믿음"이라는 단어로 표현하고, 단지 이런 가르침을 거절하거나 믿을 수 없는 것으로 취급하지 않는 일을 믿음으로 이해한다.

그들은 세부적인 그리스도의 가르침에 도달한 것도 아니고, 구원역사의 의미를 아는 것도 아니다. 그들은 그들이 가르침 받은 것에 대한 생각으로 자신의 입장을 정하는 일을 하지 않지만 그러나 자신의 입장을 정하는 일은 생명력 있는 믿음을 갖기 위해, 즉 모든 믿음의 가르침에 대한 내적인 확신을 갖기 위해 필요한 일이다. 그러나 생명력 있는 믿음이 유일하게 영원한 생명으로 인도한다. 왜냐면 형식적인 믿음이 혼을 변화시킬 수 없기 때문이다. 사람이 순수한 진리에 대한 깊은 갈망을 충분히 가지고 있지 않는 동안에는 형식적인 믿음이 전부이다.

진리를 향한 갈망이 비로소 그가 받은 영적인 내용에 대해 생각하게 만들어, 그에게 내적 확신이 임하거나 또는 의식적으로 거절한다. 왜냐면 그가 이런 생각을 통해 확신이 있고 생명력 있는 믿음을 가질 수 없기 때문이다. 이렇게 올바른 것과 틀린 것을 구별하는 일이 일어나야만 하고, 오류와 진리는 구별되어만 한다. 그렇지 않고는 하나님의 대한 올바른 개념을 가질 수 없기 때문이다. 온전한 하나님이 만든 모든 것은 온전해야만 한다. 그러나 잘못된 가르침은 절대로 하나님의 성품을 깨닫게 못하게 하고 하나님을 왜곡시킨다.

(1949년 8월 8일) 스스로 형식적인 믿음과 생명력 있는 믿음을 구별할 줄 모르면서 하나님의 도움으로 자신의 입장을 정하여 생명력 있는 믿음에 이르지 못한, 스스로 진리에 대한 깨달음을 얻지 못한 사람들이 이웃사람들을 가르치려고 한다면, 가르침 받는 사람을 올바른 믿음에 도달하게 할 수 없다. 이런 일이 자신을 믿는 사람으로 여기지만, 믿음과는 멀리 떨어져 있는 수많은 사람들이 있는 이유를 설명해주고, 왜 오류가 널리 퍼져 있고, 진리가 단지 적게 영접되는 지를 설명해주고, 만일 자신 스스로 진지하게 점검하면 오류를 발견할 수 있음에도, 많은 사람들이 많은 것을 그냥 진리로 믿는 이유를 설명해주고 있다.

그들은 전통에 매여 있고, 생각하지 않고, 고민해보지 않고, 여러 세대를 걸쳐 전해진 똑같은 잘못된 가르침을 넘겨 받는다. 예수 그리스도를 통해 순수한 형태로 사람들에게 전해진 가르침을 통해 단지 변개된 것과 변색된 것을 알 수 있다. 왜냐면 그들이 스스로 생각하지 않기 때문이고, 다른 점에 주의를 기울이지 않았기 때문이다. 게다가 사람들이 조건 없이 믿음의 가르침을 영접하는 일을 의무로 만들었기 때문이다. 그러므로 그들은 어떤 책임도 느끼지 못하고, 그들의 믿음은 갈수록 굳어지고, 영적을 성장을 이룰 수 없는 죽은 믿음이 되었다.

사람들에게 그들의 죽음의 상태에 주의를 기울이도록 해야 한다. 그러므로 항상 생명력 있는 믿음을 설교해야 한다. 그들에게 그들이 전통적으로 넘겨 받은 영적인 사상만을 인정하며, 입으로뿐만 아니라, 깊은 확신을 갖기 위해 생각으로 논쟁이 필요한 깊은 확신에 도달하지 못한 동안에는 자신을 믿는 사람이라고 말해서는 안된다는 것을 가르쳐줘야 한다.

그러면 그의 눈에 비늘이 벗겨질 것이고, 심장과 이성이 잠시 동안 어떤 것을 영접하는 것을 거절할 것이고, 비로소 진리를 구별해낼 것이다. 진리가 사람들을 행복하게 하고, 열심으로 진리를 대변하는 사람이 되게 한다. 그러면 그는 생명력 있게 믿을 수 있고, 모든 외적인 형식으로부터 자유롭게 되고, 그럴 때 비로소 그의 혼이 성장할 수 있고, 그는 예수 그리스도가 이 땅에서 세운 교회의 일원이 된다.

Traditional faith.... Conventional faith.... Misguided teachings....

It is extremely hard work to change people’s traditional faith, the conventional faith, into a living faith, because they do not yet understand the word ‘faith’. They have adopted the word traditionally without being aware of its actual deep meaning and rather adhere to external practices and customs than to the core which constitutes the teaching of Christ.

They may have indeed listened with their ears to everything in relation to Jesus Christ as the divine Redeemer and describe this knowledge with the word ‘faith’. They only mean by this that they do not object to this knowledge or reject it as improbable. But they have neither explored the details of the Christian teaching nor are they at all aware of the significance of the act of Salvation. Hence they refrain from forming an opinion of what they are being taught which, however, is necessary in order to gain a living faith, i.e. to gain an inner conviction for every religious doctrine.

But only living faith can lead to eternal life, because all kinds of conventional faith are unsuitable to transform the soul.

And everything is a conventional faith as long as the person is not overcome by a deep desire for pure truth. Because only this desire prompts him to think about the imparted spiritual knowledge which is then followed by inner conviction or by conscious rejection if he cannot find inner conviction, or living faith.

And this elimination of wrong from right has to take place. Error has to be separated from truth otherwise people cannot find a correct concept of God, Whose essence is of such perfection that everything which testifies of Him also has to be perfect. However, false teachings will never reveal God’s essence but forever mirror a distorted image of God. But as long as the people wanting to instruct other people.... (08.08.1949) do not know the difference between conventional and living faith themselves, as long as these people have not gained the knowledge of truth themselves, precisely by forming an opinion with divine help thus having achieved a living faith, they will not convey the right faith to the learners either. This explains why countless people may well call themselves religious yet are far removed from it.... why error is therefore widespread and truth is only of little interest, why human beings accept much as truth which, with sincere will, they certainly could recognise as error. But they keep to tradition, for generations they thoughtlessly and unreservedly continue to adopt the same distorted teachings which initially were given by Jesus Christ in their purest form to the people and which only became clouded and distorted due to a lack of own thinking and thus deviations were ignored. Moreover, people became duty bound to accept religious dogma unconditionally, so that they did not feel responsible and thus their faith became increasingly inflexible and a dead faith cannot result in spiritual progress.

People’s attention should be drawn to their lifeless state, and thus living faith has to be preached all the time. They have to be advised that they may not call themselves believers as long as they only accept traditionally adopted spiritual knowledge without having made it their own, thus being able to uphold it with innermost conviction and not just with their mouth, and that this also necessitates intellectual contemplation. Then the veil will fall from their eyes, then heart and intellect will occasionally refuse to accept something, and only then will the truth be made known, which will then make the person joyful and turn him into a diligent supporter. And then the human being will be able to believe actively and have freed himself from formality, only then can his soul mature and only then can he be a member of the church which Jesus Christ founded on earth....
