죽음의 순간. 준비되지 못함. 죽음의 순간의 고통.

삶의 한 가운데서 사람은 자신의 육신의 죽음을 향한 질문에 대해 생각하기 시작한다. 이때 갑작스러운 종말을 향한 생각이 든다. 그는 초기에는 이 질문을 떨쳐버리려고 한다. 그러나 그는 항상 또다시 이 질문에 주의를 기울이게 될 것이다. 이는 마치 질문에 집중하도록, 지속해서 자극을 받는 것과 같다. 이는 자신의 종말에 대해 생각하고, 이를 향한 처지를 밝히라는 지속되는 경고와 같다.

영의 세력은 모든 순간을 활용하여, 사람들이 이를 다시 기억하게 한다. 이러한 생각에 주의를 기울이는 일은 진실로 단지 혼에 유익을 준다. 주의를 기울이지 않는 한순간이 이 땅의 존재를 이미 끝내게 할 수 있다. 누구도 자기 죽음의 시간이 다가온다면, 그의 이 땅의 생명을 한 시간이라도 연장할 능력이 있는 사람은 없다.

그러므로 모든 사람이 영원한 나라에 들어가기 위해, 이 땅의 삶을 언제든지 마칠 준비를 해야 한다. 그는 죽음 이후에 자신의 계속되는 삶을 의식적으로 생각해야 한다. 그는 자신의 이 땅의 삶을 자신의 이 땅의 과제와 전적으로 일치가 되도록 만들어야 한다. 이 땅의 삶이 단지 저세상의 실제적인 삶을 위한 준비기간이 되어야 한다.

자신의 이 땅의 삶이 하나님의 계명에 합당한지 엄격하게 자신을 점검해 본다면, 그가 하늘과 이 땅의 창조주를 섬기는 일에 관심을 둔다면, 그가 항상 하나님과 연결되기를 구하고, 이로써 의식적으로 자신을 준비하고, 자신의 혼에 작업을 한다면, 죽음을 향한 생각이 그를 놀라게 하지 않을 것이다. 그는 죽음을 오히려 편안하게 느낄 것이고, 죽음의 시간을 육체의 묶임으로부터 자유롭게 되는 시간으로 보는 법을 배울 것이다.

반대로 죽음을 향한 모든 생각을 두려워하며 거부하거나, 자신에게 해주는 경고에 전적으로 무관심하고, 지나가게 하는 사람들은, 편안함으로부터 자신을 깨울 수 있는 어떤 것에 의해서도 자신을 괴롭히지 않기 때문에, 계속하여 이 땅에서 쉬운 삶을 살 것이다.

그들은 어떤 책임감도 없이 날마다 계속하여 살 것이다. 그들은 계속 산다는 가능성을 이유로 어떠한 제한도 자신에게 가하지 않을 것이다. 그들은 그들에게 삶의 과제를 알려주는 모든 일을 거부할 것이다. 그러나 그들은 가까이 다가오는 죽음으로 끔찍한 불안에 빠질 것이다. 만약에 그들이 이 전에 오랫동안의 고통을 통해, 다른 생각을 하지 않으면, 그들은 죽음의 모든 끔찍함을 맛볼 것이다.

그들에게 죽음의 순간은 환영할 만한 시간이 아니다. 그들은 여전히 모든 힘을 사용하여, 이 땅의 그의 존재에 매달리게 될 것이고, 다른 삶과 바꾸려고 하지 않을 것이다. 왜냐하면 그들이 다른 삶을 아주 적게라도 전혀 준비하지 않았기 때문이다. 모든 사람에게 떠나는 순간이 오고, 자주 예상치 못하게 온다. 준비되지 않은 사람은 죽음의 모든 고통을 맛보게 된다.

그의 종말은 진실로 부러워할 만한 것이 아니다. 그러나 모든 사람이 스스로 죽음의 순간을 자신의 구원의 순간으로 만드는 일을 자신의 손 아래 가지고 있다. 만약에 사람들이 이 땅에서 그들의 삶을 책임질 것을 두려워할 필요가 없게 산다면, 아버지와 지속해서 연결된 가운데 이 땅의 삶을 살았기 때문에, 아버지의 긍휼과 사랑을 받는 어린 자녀와 같은 신뢰를 두고, 매 순간 자신의 생명을 아버지에게 다시 드릴 수 있게 산다면, 죽음의 순간을 자신의 구원의 순간으로 만든 것이다.

Hour of death.... without preparation.... agony of passing away....

In the middle of life, man begins to think about questions relating to his bodily end. During this time, he is haunted by thoughts of a sudden end.... he tries to avoid them at first, and yet he will always listen to them. It is like a constant urging to keep these questions in mind, it is like a continuous admonition to remember his end and to take a stand on it. Every moment the spiritual power uses to remind the human being of this, and it is truly only beneficial for the soul to pay attention to such thoughts. An unnoticed moment can already bring existence on earth to an end, and no-one has the power to prolong his own life on earth by one hour when the time of his passing has come. And therefore everyone should be prepared to give up earthly life at any time in order to enter the eternal kingdom. He should consciously concern himself with his continuation of life after death, he should adjust his earthly life such that it is completely in harmony with his earthly task and thus is only a time of preparation for the actual life in the beyond. If he constantly checks himself as to whether his earthly life corresponds to the divine commandments, if he makes it his business to serve the creator of heaven and earth.... if he always seeks contact with Him and thus consciously prepares himself and works on his soul, then the thought of death will not frighten him, he will find it rather pleasant and learn to regard the hour of death as the hour of liberation from the body shackles. People, on the other hand, who fearfully ward off every thought of it or who let the admonitions pass by completely indifferent, will indeed sometimes have an easy earthly life because they will not bother themselves with anything that could shake them out of their calm; they will live straight into the day without any sense of responsibility.... They will also never impose any restrictions on themselves for the sake of a possible continuation of life.... they will reject everything that is held up to them as a task in life.... yet with the approach of death they will fall into a dreadful restlessness and then get to taste all the horrors of it in full, if they have not previously been made accessible to other thoughts through a long time of suffering. The hour of death will not be welcome to them, they still cling to earthly life with all the fibres of their being and do not desire to exchange it for another because they are not prepared for it in the slightest. But the hour of separation comes for all, and often unforeseen. An unprepared person feels all the agonies of passing away, and his end is truly not enviable. And yet, every person has it in his own hands to make this hour an hour of salvation if he always lives his earthly life in such a way that he need not fear the responsibility.... that he can return his life to the father in heaven at any hour with the childlike trust of finding His mercy and His love, because this earthly life was lived in constant contact with Him....
