L'immortalité – l'Éternité – le suicide

Le problème de l'immortalité – le concept d'Éternité – l'homme ne peut pas le résoudre, parce qu'il ne saisit pas intellectuellement ce qui va au-delà des concepts terrestres, mais d’un autre coté il ne peut lui être donné une explication spirituelle qui serait suffisante pour qu’il puisse le comprendre. Seule l'entrée dans les Régions de Lumière peut donner à l'être une clarification partielle, mais même alors il lui reste encore un problème qui ne peut jamais être résolu complètement, c’est celui d’une Divinité éternelle. Ceci doit être dit en introduction pour rendre compréhensible ce qui suit.

En ces temps de misère spirituelle les hommes sont tentés de vouloir mettre fin à leur vie et avec cela à leur «être» selon leur agrément, parce qu'ils croient exister seulement pour une période de temps limitée et ils se sentent autorisés et capables de l'abréger. À eux il manque simplement la compréhension de l'immortalité, pour un temps illimité, pour l'Éternité. Le fait qu'ils ne cesseront jamais d'exister, est pour eux quelque chose d’indémontrable, et il leur est plus agréable de penser que la vie se termine un jour. Et l'homme ressent quelque fois un malaise à la pensée de la fin temporelle, mais il préfère cette pensée, plutôt que celle d’une continuation de la vie après la mort, parce qu'il sait que sur la Terre tout est limité dans le temps et donc il ne veut et ne peut pas croire à l’immortalité de son «Moi». Vouloir rendre ensuite claire à un homme la pensée du concept «éternel», serait simplement impossible. La pensée que quelque chose qui est si intimement lié à lui, ne doive jamais cesser d'exister l'opprime et réveille en lui la sensation de responsabilité parce qu’il pressent que la vie serait à considérer totalement différemment s’il admettait une existence permanente.

Immortality.... Eternity.... Suicide....

The question of immortality.... the concept of eternity.... cannot be solved by the human being because on one hand he cannot understand something that reaches beyond earthly concepts, but on the other hand he cannot be given a spiritual explanation which he could adequately understand either. Only on entering the regions of light can the being be given a partial explanation but even then it remains a problem which, like the eternal Deity, can never be completely solved and comprehended. This has to be said first in order to explain the following:

In times of great spiritual adversity people are inclined to believe that they can put an end to their lives at will, and thus an end to their existence, because they believe that they only exist for a limited period of time and hence feel entitled and qualified to shorten it. They simply lack understanding for immortality, for endlessness of time, for eternity.... That they will never cease to exist cannot be proven to them, but the thought of knowing that life will end one day is far more comforting to them.... And although from time to time the human being feels uneasy about the temporal ending he nevertheless rather accepts this thought than the thought of a continuation of life after death because he knows that everything on earth is temporary and therefore he cannot and will not believe in the immortality of his Self. To explain the concept of ‘eternal’ to such a person would simply be impossible.... The idea that something so intimately related to him should never cease to exist worries him and awakens his sense of responsibility because, understandably, life has to be viewed quite differently as soon as a permanent existence has to be taken into account.
