Stimulating an unbeliever to love work....

The unbeliever cannot be given spiritual knowledge because he rejects everything that cannot be proven but only demands faith. But he can be stimulated to work with love, because he can only attain faith on the path of love. An unbeliever's heart need not be hardened so that he will therefore very well perform works of neighbourly love if he is made aware of his fellow human being's adversity, if he is encouraged by a well-meaning fellow human being to contribute towards the alleviation of this adversity.... if an appeal is made to his compassion, to his willingness to help and his earthly situation which makes it possible for him to help.... It is the greatest merit of a person who lives in love himself to spur his fellow human being into loving activity, for this can then also result in faith which, without love, is nevertheless only a dead faith and thus not much more valuable than unbelief. As long as a person passes by his fellow human being's adversity he can also be regarded as unbelieving, even though he calls himself believing. Only when a person's will to give breaks through, when he seeks to make his fellow human being happy or to avert suffering from him.... when he wants to help.... he is also able to listen to knowledge offered to him and to take a stand on it, and only then is it possible to revive in him a belief in a spiritual kingdom which exists outside the earthly kingdom....

Therefore it is a futile labour of love to try to convince an unbelieving person intellectually, that is, to present spiritual knowledge to him and persuade him to accept it, because a person without love is not capable of doing so. On the other hand, the divine teaching of love can be presented to him and its effect made credible if such a life of love is exemplified to him and his heart is also appealed to to participate in alleviating his fellow human being's hardship.... if he is first encouraged to give away his abundance until he then finds happiness himself in doing good.... And then he is also already won, then his resistance to spiritual knowledge becomes less and less, he is shaken in his unbelief.... he begins to think about his life and more willingly accepts what requires faith.... he will learn to believe because he has now become capable of it through love....

믿지 않는 사람에게 사랑을 행하도록 자극해주는 일.

믿지 않는 사람에게 영적인 지식을 제공할 수 없다. 왜냐면 그가 증명할 수 없고 단지 믿기를 요구하는 모든 것을 거부하기 때문이다. 그러나 그가 사랑을 행하도록 그에게 자극해줄 수 있다. 왜냐면 그가 단지 사랑의 길을 통해 믿음에 도달할 수 있기 때문이다. 믿지 않는 사람의 심장이 강팍해야만 하는 것은 아니다. 그러므로 믿지 않는 사람에게 이웃이 처한 위험을 보여주고, 그가 마음에 들어 하는 이웃에 의해 이런 위험을 줄여주도록 자극을 받고, 그의 동정심에 호소하고, 그의 자원하여 도와 주려는 의지를 자극하고, 그가 도울 수 있게 하는 그의 이 땅의 형편에 호소하면, 그가 이웃사랑을 아주 잘 행할 수 있다.

스스로 사랑 안에서 사는 사람의 가장 큰 업적은 이웃이 사랑을 행하도록 자극해주는 일이다. 왜냐면 이를 통해 이웃이 믿음을 가질 수 있기 때문이다. 그러나 사랑이 없는 믿음은 죽은 믿음이고 그러므로 믿지 않는 것보다 훨씬 더 가치가 없다. 사람이 이웃의 위험을 지나치는 동안에는 비록 그가 자신을 믿은 사람으로 소개할지라도, 그를 믿음이 없는 사람으로 여길 수 있다. 사람의 주려는 의지가 나타나고, 그가 이웃을 행복하게 해주려고 시도하거나 또는 이웃이 고난을 피하게 해주려고 시도하고, 돕기를 원하면, 그는 또한 그에게 제시된 지식을 들을 수 있고, 그에 대한 입장을 정할 수 있다. 그러면 이 땅의 세상 밖에 존재하는 영의 나라를 믿음이 그 안에서 비로소 살아나게 하는 일이 가능하다.

그러므로 믿지 않는 사람을 이성적으로 설득하려는 일은, 즉 영적인 지식을 그에게 전하고, 이를 영접하도록 설득하는 일은 헛된 사랑의 역사이다. 왜냐면 사랑이 없는 사람은 영적인 지식을 영접할 수 없기 때문이다. 반면에 그에게 사랑의 가르침을 줄 수 있고, 만역에 그 앞에서 이런 사랑의 삶을 모범적으로 살고, 이웃의 고통을 완화시키는 일에 동참하도록 그의 심장에 호소하고, 그 자신이 선한 일을 행하는 기쁨을 찾을 때까지 먼저 자신에게 넘치게 있는 것을 베풀도록 권고하면, 그에게 사랑의 가르침의 효력을 믿을 만하게 해줄 수 있다. 그러면 그를 이미 얻은 것이고, 영적인 지식을 향한 그의 저항이 점점 줄어들고, 그의 불신이 흔들리게 된다. 그는 자신의 삶에 대해 생각하기 시작하고, 믿기 위한 선행조건을 자원하여 영접하고, 믿는 법을 배우게 된다.
