Importance of establishing a connection with God while still on earth....

It is left to the will of man to establish the union with God or not. However, it is decisive for the whole of eternity whether he allows his will to become active in the right way, namely towards union with God.... He must express the admission of his own weakness and helplessness towards God through a conscious call to God, through prayer, which can also only be sent up in thought to Him, Who alone is strong and mighty. The human being has to acknowledge that God is lord over heaven and earth, and this acknowledgement then also results in submission to His will, which is the purpose and goal of earthly life. For the being is only then powerful when it no longer places itself outside of God's power but works in the same will with God out of His power, because the power from God can only then flow towards it when it has given up its former resistance against God, thus no longer expresses any other will than God's will. Giving up resistance therefore means increased strength.... a transformation of one's own powerlessness into an inflowing abundance of strength.... A person enters this state through prayer, through the call of God, which is an admission of his powerlessness and weakness.... This moment is the actual turning point in his life, when he consciously turns to God. And this moment must absolutely occur in earthly life if his fate is to be decided favourably for eternity. For it is the state of realization which, although it only begins at this moment and is therefore still of the smallest extent, inevitably leads to increased knowledge because the spell which caused the night of the spirit has been broken. Once a person has called upon God in prayer, i.e. once he has turned to the powerful deity, his higher development will progress because the strength from God will support him. However, as long as he does not try to establish this bond, as long as he believes himself to be strong or independent of a stronger power, his state is powerless and his spirit is dark. If he enters eternity in such a state, his struggle for realization there is incredibly difficult, i.e. he does not strive for it because there is nothing for him that seems worth striving for. And this state is dreadful because it can last for eternities and in the beyond the opportunity to consciously turn to God is even less recognized and utilized than on earth. In earthly life the hardship and suffering often drives the human being to ask for help because the life force becomes active in him and drives him to strive for any change of his state. In the beyond, however, the soul is completely apathetic as soon as it is powerless, that it does nothing for its own redemption, that it therefore remains inactive, but its will is not forced in the beyond either. If the human being called upon the eternal deity in earthly life shortly before his death, then the knowledge of Him will remain with him in the beyond, he will continue to think and reason, he will pick up where he left off in earthly life, for once faith in a powerful God has awakened in him he will never let go of it but will turn to Him in every spiritual adversity, he will recognize his own imperfect state and he will also know that he has not made full use of earthly life. Through God's call he has already become a recipient of strength and his soul experiences this flow of strength as an increased desire for God, even if it is not yet worthy of His presence. For this is the manifestation of divine strength, that it inevitably leads towards Him from Whom it originated, that the stream of strength flowing from God thus longs to return there and likewise urges the soul towards Him.... And this longing for God is also the surest guarantee for spiritual higher development in the beyond.... On earth the human being often still falls back into the old life, into the old thinking, as soon as he has come out of the great adversity that caused him to pray. In the beyond, however, the longing for God's help remains because the soul feels its lack of strength.... This help it requested in prayer was not always granted to it on earth and yet the soul felt God's love when it passed away and now it constantly longs for this love, even if it has not attained the degree of maturity to be able to enjoy the bliss of beholding God in the spiritual kingdom. The spell has been broken by God's conscious call and spiritual striving immediately sets in in the beyond, that is, as soon as the soul has attained realization its will becomes active and the desire for God stimulates it into loving activity.... whereas souls which lack the first realization often remain in complete lack of will for endless times and this is also a state of weakness, a state of torment and despair and turning away from the beings of light which want to help them. The beings of light can likewise help the former and the souls will not close themselves to their ideas and thus progress in their development. The more intimately a person has established a connection with God in prayer on earth, the more he has detached himself from the opposing power and the less the soul is exposed to its hostilities in the beyond. For God will not abandon the soul which has once fled to Him in its distress and affliction, and a heartfelt cry for help will always bring it spiritual success, even if God, in His wisdom and love, does not fulfil the earthly request and ends the human being's life. He knows about people's weakness of will and so He truly knows best what serves the soul. And He will always give it the greatest possible opportunities for development, both on earth and in the beyond. Yet nothing is as necessary and significant as recognizing the eternal deity while still on earth.... as consciously contacting God in prayer.... For then the human being recognizes a powerful and mighty being above him and confesses his weakness and helplessness.... And then God takes hold of him and inevitably helps him to ascend....

Het belang van het nog op aarde tot stand brengen van de verbinding met God

Aan de wil van de mens is het overgelaten om de verbinding met God wel of niet tot stand te brengen. Het is echter doorslaggevend voor de hele eeuwigheid of hij zijn wil op de juiste wijze werkzaam laat worden, namelijk voor de aaneensluiting met God. Hij moet het toegeven aan de eigen zwakheid en hulpeloos tegenover God onder woorden brengen door een bewust aanroepen van God, door gebed dat ook alleen in gedachten kan worden opgezonden naar Hem Die alleen sterk en machtig is. De mens moet erkennen dat God de Heer is over hemel en aarde en het erkennen heeft dan ook het zich onderwerpen aan Zijn wil tot gevolg, wat zin en doel is van het aardse bestaan. Want het wezen heeft pas macht wanneer het zich niet meer buiten de kracht van God plaatst, maar in gelijke wil met God werkzaam is uit Zijn kracht, omdat de kracht uit God pas naar hem kan stromen wanneer hij zijn vroegere weerstand tegen God heeft opgegeven, dus geen andere wil meer tot uitdrukking brengt dan de wil van God. Het opgeven van de weerstand betekent dus meer kracht, een omzetting van de eigen krachteloosheid in toestromende volheid van kracht. In deze toestand verplaatst de mens zich door het gebed, door het aanroepen van God, dat toegeven is van zijn krachteloosheid en zwakheid.

Dit moment is het eigenlijke keerpunt in zijn leven, waar hij zich bewust naar God keert. En dit moment moet onvoorwaardelijke plaatsvinden in het aardse bestaan, wil zijn lot voor de eeuwigheid gunstig beslist worden. Want het is de staat van het inzicht, die weliswaar pas op dit moment begint, dus nog van zeer kleine omvang is, maar die onvermijdelijk naar een groter weten voert, omdat de ban verbroken is die de nacht van de geest teweeg heeft gebracht. Heeft de mens eerst eens in gebed God aangeroepen, dan heeft hij zich dus naar de almachtige Godheid gekeerd. Dan gaat zijn ontwikkeling in positieve richting, omdat de kracht uit God hem ondersteunt. Zolang hij echter deze verbinding niet tot stand probeert te brengen, zolang hij zichzelf als sterk en onafhankelijk van een sterkere macht waant, is zijn toestand krachteloos en zijn geest duister. Gaat hij in zo’n toestand de eeuwigheid binnen, dan is daar zijn worstelen om inzicht ongelofelijk zwaar, dat wil zeggen: hij streeft er niet naar omdat er voor hem niets bestaat wat hem nastrevenswaardig toeschijnt. En deze toestand is verschrikkelijk, omdat hij eeuwigheden kan bestaan. En in het hiernamaals wordt de mogelijkheid van een zich bewust naar God keren nog veel minder ingezien en benut dan op aarde.

In het aardse bestaan drijven nood en leed de mens er vaak toe om hulp te smeken, omdat de levenskracht in hem actief wordt en hem ertoe aandrijft enige verandering van zijn toestand na te streven. In het hiernamaals daarentegen is de ziel helemaal apathisch zodra ze krachteloos is, zodat ze niets onderneemt voor haar eigen verlossing. Ze blijft dus werkloos, maar ook in het hiernamaals wordt haar wil niet gedwongen. Heeft de mens in zijn aardse leven nog kort voor zijn dood de eeuwige Godheid aangeroepen, dan behoudt hij het weten over Hem ook in het hiernamaals. Hij denkt en concludeert verder. Hij gaat verder waar hij in het leven op aarde is gestopt, want zodra eenmaal het geloof in een almachtige God in hem is ontwaakt, laat hij dit nooit vallen. Veeleer wendt hij zich in elke geestelijke nood tot Hem. Hij ziet zelf zijn gebrekkige toestand in en hij weet ook dat hij zijn leven op aarde niet volledig heeft benut. Hij is door het aanroepen van God al een ontvanger van kracht geworden en zijn ziel ervaart deze krachtstroom als een toegenomen verlangen naar God, zelfs wanneer ze Zijn nabijheid nog niet waardig is. Want dit is de uiting van de goddelijke kracht, dat ze hem onvermijdelijk dichter bij Degene brengt van Wie ze afkomstig is. Dat dus de uit God komende krachtstroom daar naar terugverlangt en de ziel eveneens naar Hem dringt. En dit verlangen naar God is ook de zekerste waarborg voor de positieve geestelijke ontwikkeling in het hiernamaals.

Op aarde valt de mens nog vaak terug in het oude leven, in het oude denken, zodra hij uit de grote nood is die hem aanleiding gaf om te bidden. Maar in het hiernamaals blijft het verlangen naar de hulp van God bestaan, omdat de ziel haar krachteloosheid voelt. Niet altijd is haar op aarde de hulp ten deel gevallen die ze in het gebed heeft gevraagd. En toch heeft de ziel de liefde van God ervaren bij het sterven. En naar deze liefde verlangt ze nu voortdurend, zelfs wanneer ze de graad van rijpheid niet heeft bereikt om van de gelukzaligheid van het aanschouwen van God in het geestelijke rijk te kunnen genieten. Door het bewuste aanroepen van God is de ban verbroken. En in het hiernamaals begint dadelijk het geestelijke streven. Dat wil zeggen: zodra de ziel tot inzicht is gekomen, wordt haar wil actief en het verlangen naar God spoort haar aan om in liefde werkzaam te zijn, terwijl de zielen bij wie het eerste inzicht ontbreekt, vaak eindeloze tijden in algehele willoosheid blijven steken. En dit is ook een toestand van krachteloosheid, een toestand van kwellingen en vertwijfeling, en het zich afwenden van de lichtwezens die hen willen helpen. De lichtwezens kunnen de eerst genoemden eveneens helpend bijstaan en voor hun denkbeelden zullen de zielen zich niet afsluiten. Dus zullen ze in hun ontwikkeling vooruitgaan.

Hoe inniger nu de mens op aarde in het gebed de verbinding met God tot stand heeft gebracht, des te meer heeft hij zich losgemaakt van de tegenstander en des te minder is de ziel in het hiernamaals aan diens aanvallen blootgesteld. Want God laat de ziel niet vallen die eens zijn toevlucht tot Hem heeft genomen in haar nood en benauwenis. En een roep om hulp die uit het hart komt, zal haar geestelijk ook steeds resultaat opleveren, zelfs wanneer God in Zijn wijsheid en liefde het aardse verzoek niet vervult en het leven van de mens beëindigt. Hij kent de zwakke wil van de mensen en zo weet Hij waarlijk het beste wat nuttig is voor de ziel. En steeds zal Hij haar de grootst mogelijke gelegenheden bieden zich te ontwikkelen, zowel op aarde als ook in het hiernamaals. Maar niets is zo noodzakelijk en belangrijk als het nog in het aardse leven erkennen van de eeuwige Godheid, als het bewuste contact zoeken met God in het gebed. Want dan erkent de mens een almachtig Wezen vol van kracht boven zich en bekent hij zijn zwakheid en hulpeloosheid. En dan pakt God hem vast en helpt Hij hem onafwendbaar opwaarts.
