Bearing the cross in patience and surrender....

Unlimited possibilities open up to the human being as long as he is willing to shape himself according to God's will, that is, as long as he consciously works on his soul. From the hour of realizing that his purpose on earth is the higher education of his soul, his earthly course is an endless series of opportunities where he can attain this spiritual maturity through self-conquest and active neighbourly love. And so his earthly life will bring trials from the very beginning in which he should prove himself.... Nor will it pass him by without a fight, but it is precisely in the struggle that his will will be strengthened and his strength increased. So life will appear to him to consist of opposition and hardship much sooner than he will be able to indulge in unclouded joy of life. These are the first cliffs on which his little ship of life must not be wrecked; he must steer it round all cliffs with a sure hand and with faithful trust in God, only then will he prove himself and utilize the opportunities for higher spiritual development. Jesus Christ Himself made it a task for people with the words: Whoever wants to follow Me must willingly take up his cross.... He does not say that He wants to take away their cross, that He wants to relieve them; on the contrary, He announces to them that following Jesus consists of bearing the cross that He imposes on people. The unspeakable suffering that Jesus Christ took upon Himself was the atonement for mankind's great guilt of sin. He bore His cross without grumbling or complaining. What He endured for mankind thus cancelled their guilt, as it were. Whoever wants to follow Jesus must therefore also atone for sinful humanity, i.e. bear the suffering that humanity has brought upon itself through sin. Love for one's fellow human being should now move the person to bear suffering for his sin, i.e. to reduce the guilt of sin through suffering and thereby be active on earth in a redeeming way. And the loving person will also always be willing to do so, for his soul knows about the downtrodden situation of those who are entangled in great guilt of sin and wants to help them. And therefore every loving person will not rebel against divine will if the latter imposes a cross on him and his earthly life no longer passes by in quiet peacefulness. He knows that an existence without a fight would not be suitable for the soul's higher development and thus he will not rebel either, even if the cross seems unbearable to him. And therefore the human being should not be despondent if his life appears to be more difficult than that of his fellow human being, yet God does not impose a heavier fate on the human being than he can endure, and it is the strength from God which makes this cross easier for him.... It is the supply of strength which man can consciously ask for, but which must also be asked for.... But then every cross, no matter how heavy it seems, is no longer as heavy a burden as before. But taking up the cross of Christ means submitting to everything that God sends upon man without grumbling or resistance. For the slightest resistance cancels out the working of divine power, and the human being must struggle hard so that he can remain victorious in the battle of life and already be able to be redemptively active on earth.... He only ever has to recognize God's love in all suffering, in the cross imposed on him, which wants to let the human being attain spiritual perfection and is the quickest and surest way to take up the cross in all patience and submission to God's will and to follow the divine lord and saviour....

인내와 복종으로 십자가를 지는 일.

인간이 자신의 혼에 대한 작업을 의식적으로 하면서, 하나님의 뜻에 따라 자신을 형성할 준비가 되어 있다면, 그에게 무한한 가능성이 열린다. 그가 이 땅의 목적이 자신의 혼을 높이 성장하게 하는 일임을 깨달은 시간부터 그의 이 땅의 길은, 자신을 극복하고, 이웃 사랑을 행함을 통해, 영의 성장을 이룰 수 있는 끝없는 일련의 기회이다. 그러므로 그 순간부터 그의 이 땅의 삶은 곧 그가 자신을 증명해야 할 시험을 맞이하게 될 것이다.

어떤 일도 더 이상 싸움 없이 그를 지나치지 않을 것이고, 바로 싸움을 통해 그의 의지가 강해지고 그의 힘이 증가하게 될 것이다. 따라서 그의 삶은 방해를 받지 않고 삶의 기쁨에 빠지는 삶이기 보다는, 저항과 고난으로 이뤄진 삶처럼 보이게 될 것이다. 이런 것들은 그의 작은 생명선이 좌초해서는 안되는 첫 번째 암초이다. 그는 확실한 손과 하나님을 믿는 신뢰를 가지고 모든 암초 주위로 생명선을 인도해야만 한다. 그러면 비로소 그는 자신을 증명하고, 영적으로 더 높은 성장을 위한 가능성을 활용하게 된다.

예수 그리스도는 다음과 같은 말씀으로 친히 사람들에게 과제를 부여했다. "나를 따르기 원하는 사람은 기꺼이 십자가를 져야만 한다." 예수님은 그에게서 그의 십자가를 거두어 드리겠다고 말하지 않았고, 십자가를 줄여주겠다고 말하지 않았다. 예수님은 사람들에게 그와 반대로, 예수님을 따르는 일은 자신이 사람들에게 부과한 십자가를 지는 일이라는 말을 했다. 예수 그리스도가 자신에게 짊어진 말할 수 없는 고통은 인류의 죄짐에 대한 속죄였다.

그는 원망하거나 불평하지 않고 십자가를 짊어졌다. 그러므로 그가 인류를 위해 참은 일은 인류의 죄를 해결했다. 그러므로 예수님을 따르기 원하는 사람은 죄 많은 인류를 위해 속죄해야만 한다. 다시 말해 인류가 죄를 통해 그들 자신에게 가져온 고통을 마찬가지로 감당해야만 한다. 이웃을 향한 사랑이 이제 사람들로 하여금 그들의 죄를 위해 고통을 받도록 움직여야 한다. 다시 말해 고통을 통해 죄짐을 줄여주고, 이로써 이 땅에서 구원하는 일을 해야 한다. 사랑하는 사람은 또한 항상 구원하는 일을 할 준비가 되어 있게 될 것이다. 왜냐하면 그의 혼이 큰 죄짐에 얽혀 있는 그들의 노예 상태에 대해 알기 때문에 그들을 돕기를 원하기 때문이다.

그러므로 사랑 안에서 사는 모든 사람은 하나님의 뜻이 그에게 십자가를 부과하고, 그의 이 땅의 삶을 더 이상 조용하고 평화롭게 지나가게 하지 않는다면, 하나님의 뜻에 반항하지 않을 것이다. 그는 싸움이 없이는 혼이 더 높은 성장을 할 수 없음을 알기 때문에 십자가가 그에게 견딜 수 없는 것처럼 보일지라도 반발하지 않는다. 그러므로 인간의 삶이 이웃 사람보다 분명하게 더 힘들 때, 낙담해서는 안 된다. 그러나 하나님은 사람이 견딜 수 있는 것보다 더 무거운 것을 부과하지 않는다. 이런 십자가를 더 쉽게 해주는 것이 하나님의 힘이고, 사람이 의식적으로 요구할 수 있는 힘의 공급이다. 그러나 이런 힘의 공급은 또한 요청을 받아야만 한다.

그러면 아무리 무거워 보이는 모든 십자가가 더 이상 이 전처럼 그렇게 무거운 짐이 아니게 된다. 그러나 그리스도의 십자가를 짊어지는 일은 불평이나, 반발이 없이 하나님이 사람에게 보낸 모든 것에 복종하는 일을 의미한다. 왜냐하면 가장 작은 저항이 하나님의 힘의 역사가 불가능하게 만들기 때문이다. 그러면 사람은 생명을 위한 투쟁에서 승리를 하고, 이 땅에서 이미 구속역사에 적극적으로 참여할 수 있기 위해, 어렵게 투쟁해야만 하기 때문이다. 그는 항상 단지 모든 고난 가운데서, 그에게 부과된 십자가를 지는 가운데, 하나님의 사랑을 깨달아야만 한다. 하나님의 사랑은 사람이 영적 완성에 도달하기를 원하고, 가장 빠르고 안전한 길인, 모든 인내로 하나님의 뜻에 순종하여 십자가를 짊어지고, 주 하나님 구세주를 따르기를 원한다.
