혼의 고통을 위해 도움을 주는 일은 가장 큰 이웃사랑이다.

너희가 이웃 사람의 혼을 위험에 두지 말아야 하는 일이 가장 중요한 이웃 사랑의 계명이다. 이 땅의 모든 고난은 끝이 난다. 그러므로 아주 중요하게 여겨서는 안 된다. 그러나 혼의 고통은 인간이 이 땅에서 혼의 고통을 고치려고 하지 않으면, 이 땅의 삶을 마칠지라도, 계속 남아 있는다. 그의 힘으로 충분하지 않은 곳에서 너희는 그를 도와야 한다. 그렇지 않으면 너희는 심장 안에서 사랑을 느끼지 못한 것이고, 이로써 이웃을 사랑하라는 하나님의 계명을 성취시키지 못하게 될 것이다. 왜냐면 그런 혼은 연약하고, 자신의 구원을 위한 힘을 모을 수 없기 때문이다.

그런 혼은 어둡고, 빛이 없고, 무지하고, 자유롭지 못하다. 너희는 이런 상태를 아는 상태로, 빛이 충만한 상태로도, 자유로운 상태로 변화시켜야 한다. 그러므로 너희는 이런 사람들을 가르쳐야 하고, 그가 어떻게 그의 이 땅의 길을 가야 하는 지에 대한 명확한 개념을 그들에게 줘야 한다. 너희는 너희를 행복하고, 너희가 이미 너희 안으로 영접한 것과 같은 지식을 그에게 소개해야 한다. 하나님이 직접 준 영의 선물에 몰입하는 일은 모든 혼을 행복하게 해야만 한다. 반대로 불운한 상태는 혼에게 영적인 위험을 의미한다. 왜냐면 사람 안에 빛이 없고, 밝지 않기 때문이다. 그러므로 이웃사람이 영의 어두움 속에서 고통을 당하고 있다면, 그에게 그런 어두움을 물리치는 방법과 길을 보여줄 때, 너희는 가장 위대한 사랑의 역사를 행한 것이다.

위험 가운데 있는 혼들은 빛에 접근할 힘이 없다. 그러므로 인간이 혼들에게 빛을 전해줘야만 한다. 그는 자신의 빛으로 그들을 비추기 위해 가장 어두운 영역으로 가는 모험을 해야 한다. 왜냐면 빛은 아직 완전히 무지한 존재들을 행복하게 하고, 빛이 혼의 고통을 덜어주기 때문이다. 그러므로 사람들이 알게 되고, 빛과 능력을 받을 수 있도록, 그들에게 지혜를 줘야 한다. 이런 일이 혼이 이 땅에 머무르는 동안에 성숙하도록 도울 수 있는 유일한 가능성이다. 혼이 위험에 처하면, 사람은 이를 적게 느낀다. 왜냐하면 그가 육체의 필요에 더 많은 관심을 기울이고, 이를 충족시킬 수 있다면, 만족하기 때문이다. 그는 혼의 고통을 느끼지 않기 때문에, 그는 또한 혼을 돕기 위해 아무 일도 하지 않는다.

그러나 영적인 재물을 추구하는 사람은 저세상의 혼들의 위험과 성숙한 상태가 부족함을 안다. 그는 자신의 지식을 활용하여, 오류에 빠진 사람을 가득한 사랑으로 움직이게 하여, 마찬가지로 영적인 재물을 추구하게 만들려고 시도해야 하고, 그에게 세상의 재물의 무가치함을 보여줘야 한다. 이웃 사람의 혼을 돌보는 일은 혼을 영원한 파멸에서 구할 수 있기 때문에 진정한 사랑의 역사이다. 사람이 이런 사랑의 역사를 위해 힘을 구할 때, 그는 절대로 헛되이 요청하게 되지 않을 것이다. 그는 그가 혼의 구원을 위해 사용하고자 하는 만큼의 힘을 받게 될 것이다.

Help in emotional distress the greatest work of love for our neighbour....

This is the most important commandment of neighbourly love, that you should not leave your fellow human beings in the misery of their souls. All earthly hardship comes to an end and is therefore not to be taken so seriously. But the hardship of the soul remains, even if the human being ends his earthly life, if he does not try to remedy it on earth. And where his own strength is not sufficient to do so, you should help him, otherwise you will not feel love in your heart and thus not fulfil the divine commandment of neighbourly love. For such a soul is weakened and unable to muster the strength to redeem itself. It is dark and without light, it is ignorant and unfree.... and you should change this state into a knowing, light-filled and free one. And therefore you have to teach these people, you have to give them a clear picture of how they should walk their earthly path, you have to introduce them to the same knowledge which makes you happy and which you have already absorbed within yourselves. The immersion into the spiritual gifts directly sent to you by God must make every soul happy, and conversely, a hapless state will mean spiritual hardship for the soul because there is no light and brightness in the human being. And thus, if your fellow human being languishes in spiritual darkness, you will be doing the greatest work of love if you show him ways and means to banish this darkness. Souls in need do not have the strength to approach the light, so the human being has to carry the light towards them. He must venture into the darkest areas in order to illuminate them with his light.... For light is a blessing even for those beings who are still completely ignorant, and light remedies the soul's adversity, thus people must be offered wisdom so that they will become knowledgeable and receive light and strength. This is the only way to help the soul to mature as long as it remains on earth. Admittedly, the human being feels little when the soul is in need, for he focuses more on the body's needs and is content if he can fulfil them. And because he does not feel the soul's need, he does nothing to help it. The person striving for spiritual possessions, however, knows about the soul's hardship in the beyond and about its lack of maturity, and he should use his knowledge and help the erring person by lovingly trying to persuade him to strive for spiritual possessions as well and by showing him the worthlessness of earthly possessions. Caring for the soul of one's fellow human being is the true exercise of neighbourly love, for it can save the soul from eternal ruin. And if a person asks for strength for this labour of love, he will never make a wrong request. He will receive strength to the same extent as he wants to use it for the salvation of souls....
