Stimuler un mécréant à agir dans l'amour

Au mécréant il ne peut être guidé aucun savoir spirituel, parce qu'il refuse tout ce qui ne peut pas être démontré, or ce savoir demande justement seulement la foi. Mais il peut être stimulé à agir dans l'amour, parce qu'il peut arriver à la foi seulement avec l'amour. Même le cœur d'un mécréant, s'il n'est pas déjà totalement endurci, peut dérouler également des œuvres d'amour pour le prochain, lorsqu’il lui est mis devant les yeux la situation de misère du prochain, et lorsqu’il est stimulé par le prochain à contribuer à l’atténuation de cette misère, lorsqu’on fait appel à sa compassion, à sa disponibilité d'aider et à sa serviabilité en fonction de sa situation terrestre. Et pour un homme qui vit lui-même dans l'amour, il y a un grand mérite à pousser le prochain à agir dans l'amour, parce que de cela il peut se lever aussi une foi qui sans l'amour est de toute façon seulement une foi morte et donc pas plus précieuse que l’incroyance. Tant qu’un homme passe outre la misère du prochain il peut être considéré comme mécréant, bien qu’il se dise lui-même croyant. Seulement lorsqu’apparait dans l'homme la volonté de donner, lorsqu’il cherche à rendre heureux le prochain ou lorsqu’il tend à lui éviter la souffrance, lorsqu’il veut aider, alors il est aussi en mesure d'écouter un savoir qui lui est offert et de prendre position à son sujet, seulement alors il est possible de faire vivre en lui une foi dans un Règne spirituel qui existe en dehors du règne terrestre.

C’est pourquoi il est vain de forcer à l'amour, de vouloir convaincre intellectuellement un homme mécréant, donc de lui soumettre un savoir spirituel et vouloir le convaincre de l'accepter, parce qu'un homme sans amour n’en n'est pas capable. Tandis qu'il peut par contre lui être présenté l'Enseignement divin de l'amour et son effet peut être rendu crédible lorsqu’une vie d’amour lui est montrée en exemple et lorsqu’il fait aussi appel à son cœur pour participer à l’atténuation de la misère du prochain, si d'abord il est stimulé à lui donner de son surplus, jusqu’à ce que lui-même prenne plaisir à faire de bien. Alors il est déjà conquis, alors sa résistance envers le savoir spirituel diminuera toujours davantage, il sera ébranlé dans son incrédulité, il commencera à réfléchir sur sa vie et acceptera avec plus de bonne volonté ce qui suppose la foi, il apprendra à croire, parce qu'à travers l'amour maintenant il en est devenu capable.

Stimulating an unbeliever to love work....

The unbeliever cannot be given spiritual knowledge because he rejects everything that cannot be proven but only demands faith. But he can be stimulated to work with love, because he can only attain faith on the path of love. An unbeliever's heart need not be hardened so that he will therefore very well perform works of neighbourly love if he is made aware of his fellow human being's adversity, if he is encouraged by a well-meaning fellow human being to contribute towards the alleviation of this adversity.... if an appeal is made to his compassion, to his willingness to help and his earthly situation which makes it possible for him to help.... It is the greatest merit of a person who lives in love himself to spur his fellow human being into loving activity, for this can then also result in faith which, without love, is nevertheless only a dead faith and thus not much more valuable than unbelief. As long as a person passes by his fellow human being's adversity he can also be regarded as unbelieving, even though he calls himself believing. Only when a person's will to give breaks through, when he seeks to make his fellow human being happy or to avert suffering from him.... when he wants to help.... he is also able to listen to knowledge offered to him and to take a stand on it, and only then is it possible to revive in him a belief in a spiritual kingdom which exists outside the earthly kingdom....

Therefore it is a futile labour of love to try to convince an unbelieving person intellectually, that is, to present spiritual knowledge to him and persuade him to accept it, because a person without love is not capable of doing so. On the other hand, the divine teaching of love can be presented to him and its effect made credible if such a life of love is exemplified to him and his heart is also appealed to to participate in alleviating his fellow human being's hardship.... if he is first encouraged to give away his abundance until he then finds happiness himself in doing good.... And then he is also already won, then his resistance to spiritual knowledge becomes less and less, he is shaken in his unbelief.... he begins to think about his life and more willingly accepts what requires faith.... he will learn to believe because he has now become capable of it through love....
