1522 Food for the soul.... spiritual food....

July 14, 1940: Book 25

Purely spiritual food is the nourishment of the soul, which can only be offered to you from above. It is a favour from God, which man cannot measure, for He gives man something undeserved, as it were. He gives him loving means for the soul's higher development, He makes everything available to him through which the human being can attain perfection. He pours out divine grace upon the earthly child in the most abundant measure in order to make the path upwards passable for him, and thus He instructs people. And this instruction is the bread of heaven, spiritual nourishment for the soul. Man also needs nourishment to maintain his body, and this is always and constantly imparted to him through God's goodness. But the nourishment the soul needs is of a different kind. The soul can only be considered spiritually because it is the union of spiritual potencies, which are therefore of spiritual origin. These soul potencies must now be supplied with something which is supernatural, which is taken from the spiritual kingdom and can only be perceived by the soul with the spiritual eye. And so the soul is now fed with a nourishment that contributes to the increase of the spiritual, the soul is spiritualized as it were, which was previously turned towards the earthly. For if the soul is only given earthly sustenance it starves and suffers terribly from its meagerness. However, if it is offered spiritual nourishment, its condition is freer.... (interruption)
